10 Tips For a Great Profile Pic

Article by BR Amelia

We love profile pictures here at Beauty Review.  We love them so much they're an actual requirement to move up the BR heirarchy*.  Why do we love them?  Because we like seeing YOU.  Yes you!

Now with 20000 members we see a lot of profile pictures.  The good.  The bad.  And the strange.  And we also see a lot of people hiding behind pictures of animals, memes and celebrities.  Which, while it shows us what you like, who you aspire to, or what a great sense of humour you have - it doesn't show us you.  And you deserve to be seen!

So here's our top ten tips for uploading a great profile picture.

  1. Consider who will be seeing the picture.  A sexy profile pic for a dating site is probably not going to attract the attention you want on a professional networking site.  For BR we just want to see your gorgeous self, save your 'come hither eyes' for those Tinder hunks!
  2. Always find the best quality photo you can.  Fuzzy and out-of-focus shots never look good.
  3. If possible, get someone else to take the picture, or crack out the selfie stick. (We know you got one for Christmas!) Close up shots are seldom flattering and photos in a mirror never look natural.
  4. Crop wisely.  Don't completey zoom in on your face, opt to keep a little background in your photo.
  5. Smile!  Trust me, no one suffers from RBF (Resting B*tch Face) more than me - but in a profile picture it comes across as grumpy more than smouldering.  As Gaga would say - show me your teeth!
  6. Have fun with filters and effects but don't overuse them and become unrecognisable!
  7. A nice candid shot is perfect, but if you're going to pose keep it natural.  Don't do the forced 'pose hand' (lots of beauty bloggers like to touch their ears it seems!) and definitely don't do a duck face or trout pout.  Play around with angles, but remember - take photos that show you, not you in a really weird pose!
  8. Don't feel the need to wear lots of makeup just for a picture, but also don't underestimate the power of a little BB cream, mascara and lippy!  Confidence is key - you won't think twice about posting a picture you feel good about!
  9. Make sure the light is in front of you, and behind your camera that way your face is illuminated and you'll look your best.
  10. Let your picture reflect who you are.  If you're a mama, use a picture of you and your bebe, or you and your kids.  Are you an animal lover?  Grab those fur babies and take some selfies.  Proud of your insane makeup collection?  Get in front of it, take a snap and make us all jealous.  But let us see you!

So have we inspired you to ditch the bad selfie and random pictures and upload a great profile picture?  What tips do you have to share?

Thanks for the tip, will try to get the dogs to co-operate and help them with their selfies.

Great topic here. Ive had a few dodgy ones lol

I definitely agree with the quality of the photo. Pixelated and fuzzy photos ate the wrist.

I wish I got a selfie stick for Christmas! Hubby told me he almost got me one as a joke and I was so mad he didn't.

Thanks for this article. I took mine with my computer, time to get the camera out, put some makeup on and grab a friend :)

I definitely agree that one can't underestimate a little make up. I took a lot of potential profile pics in from of famous buildings while I was overseas. However with make up sweating off over the day due to hot sun and lots of walking, my perfect profile pic did not look so perfect.

Oh I definitely suffer from RBF! But a good old fashioned smile goes a long way! :)

He he he profile pictures for me have to be totally crazy lol. Anyone that is friends with me on facebook will know what I mean lol.

These are fantastic tips and tricks, i will be taking these into consideration as I am the queen of RBF hahaha ;)

I quite like my profile pic. No, I don't own the donkey I'm petting. I don't even live in the same area as the donkey I'm petting. But it does give you an idea of the type of hairstyles I like to wear and the clothes I like to wear and that I wear glasses. I'm a sort of a wallflower so the looking away does sort of reflect my shy personality in the pic.

Thanks for the tips Br!

With Facebook profile pictures I always hide behind glasses of some sort, I like that on BR they are a lot smaller!! I'm definately breaking rules 3, 4 and 5 but I like it because I'm wearing one of my favourite lipsticks that I was so generously gifted by a member :)

I'm still learning. I'm trying to improve on this. Ageing isnt helping at all.

haha I always use a photo that's passed the 'facebook' test - and that I like. My current one is in a fave restaurant (Mexico) the first day I took the plunger and challenged myself to try bright lips. I'm not that photogenic but I have a couple of okay angles; it's just finding them!

Also I made them re-take my work ID pic as in the last 4 years I've actually lost a lot of weight and rediscovered makeup etc...had to laugh when it came through complete with fake tan, turquoise liner and bright pink lippy being prominent :p
