'Gosh, that's a lot of makeup.'
'How much makeup do you need to bring for a night away?'
'Didn't you just buy a lipstick last week?'
Innocous sentences on the surface, to be sure, but despite the seemingly innocence of them, you can't help but pick up on the undertone. The slight judginess. The 'I think you have a problem' edge to the words.
You laugh the questions off with flippant comments...
'A lot of makeup? No, there's so much more I could buy.'
'It's only two makeup bagsl. I nearly packed a third. This is me being restrained.'
'Yes, I bought a lipstick last week. But this is a slightly different shade. And this one's a touch warmer. So, you know, it's totally different.'
But you know what your subtle accuser is thinking. That you have a problem. That you don't know when to stop. That you might well be addicted to makeup. Are you?
Read these 24 signs and decide for yourself.
1. You don't need a makeup bag, or a cubby hole, you need shelves, or a whole room, to fit your collection.
2. You have to give yourself a pep talk when it's time to throw away an old product. And even then you might shed a few tears and say a short speech.
3. You have three shades of blusher that some might say are exactly that same colour, but you know, deep down, they're wrong. They're all different. They're all necessary. And no one can convince you otherwise.
4. The same goes for lipstick... because if you look closely enough you see tonal variation... which makes it a whole different shade of lipstick, and therefore a must for your collection.
5. When people comment on the size of your collection you're quick to justify it by mentioning that you don't have any other vices. No smoking. No drinking. No cocaine inhaling.
6. You've bought an entire eyeshadow palette because it had one shade that you loved.
7. You've bought an entire eyeshadow palette filled with shades you're sure you already have, but you've bought every other palette from the brand and you don't want the other palettes feeling sad because they're missing a member of their family.
8. You're so passionate about makeup you could hold an hour-long Ted Talk on how makeup brings meaning and joy to one's life.
9. You need more than one jar to hold all your makeup brushes.
10. When people say they've never heard of a BeautyBlender you're genuinely shocked.
11. When people say they don't wear makeup your head spins.
12. When people say they don't see the point of makeup you need to sit down and breathe, very deeply.
13. When you go on holiday half your suitcase is filled with makeup.
14. Ticking 'carry-on only' when you fly is never an option - even if you're only going for a weekend away.
15. When a company whose products you can only buy online has released a limited edition anything you've been ready to buy it bang on time - even if that means waking up at 5am... and the 'refresh page' button on your computer is dented from the workout you've given it.
16. You're in the makeup area of your local department store so often the customer service people have started stalking you like they think you're about to shoplift something.
17. Now that the customer service people at your local department store know you're not a thief, you're great mates. They know your name, your partners name, your favourite makeup brands, and what part of the monthly cycle you're in at any given time.
18. When you drop an eyeshadow/bronzer/blush you have a minor panic attack when you consider that it might be broken.
19. ... You then have a major panic attack when you pick it up and it is in fact broken.
20. Other people binge watch Netflix shows. You binge watch beauty tutorials.
21. You know so much about your favourite beauty gurus you're pretty sure if you met you'd be insta-besties.
22. You think a light makeup day involves only putting on primer, foundation, blush, bronzer, highlighter, eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara.
23. When a cosmetics store has opened you've been in line so you can be one of the first to go in... or next level, you've camped out over night.
24. If any of your friends told you that you might want to curb or cut out your makeup habit you'd cut them from your life.
