Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

Hi there I am 31 and have suffered from acne on and off since my early teens. I am currently breaking out a lot around my jawline and ive been told this is due to hormones (YAY!) I am always on the lookout for products that help with acne and specifically natural based products. I would love to be considered for this Thank you :)

I am 22 and have suffered with acne for as long as I can remember. I have tried so many different products and am yet to find one that helps. I should be over this teenage skin stuff!!

23rd February, 2014

I'm 23 and STILL suffer from pesky acne! I never got any spots when I was at school but since I've become a teacher my acne has been terrible! I put it down to stress or a hormonal thing. I always have pimples on my chin and I have bad acne scarring there too. Nothing seems to work and I don't have heaps of money to spend on skin care! I just need to find a good routine that helps get rid of these yucky spots! I knew it was a problem when a student innocently asked - "What are those funny bumps on your face Miss White?" - Awkward!

im 24 and still have acne and it sucks. seems to be more often lately i dont know why. i get them around my cheeks and around my mouth mostly. ive never tried tea tree on my face yet but would def like to try.

I'm 33 and have had acne problems since being a teen. I have tried countless products and treatments including the most natural products right the way through to anti-biotics. My breakouts are affected by my hormones, by stress and by my diet. As much as possible I like to avoid using chemicals and unnatural products so would be super keen to try out these Tea Tree products. I have used the body shop tea tree range before and I found the products very good actually.

I am another one of those "tried everything" people! I am still seeking something that will help clear my acne, not even fully clear it, I would be happy with "calmer" skin. I would love to try these products as I have not used them before and they could be the answer to my issues! People often mistake me for being far younger than I am and I believe that my skin issues makes me look a lot younger. It has been a source of self consciousness for me. I just want to be happy with my skin and feel more comfortable.

20th February, 2014

I'm 29 and have been having a lot of trouble dealing with adult acne. I had mild acne on my chin as a teen, but I have found that my skin has gotten worse with age. Over the past few years I have developed severe cystic acne on my face, neck and back. I often get very painful infections that seem to take forever to heal. Its something that I am very self-conscious about. I have tried countless face washes, several rounds of doxycycline, topical retinoic acid, and more natural remedies than I care to remember. Its really disheartening to think, but sometimes I feel like it will never go away.

20th February, 2014

I break out in spots around my chin, & under my nose when my period is due, during my period and just after. Sometimes I can go 3 weeks in the month with spots. I don't use anything on it because nothing seems to make it better. I'm forty now and thought I'd be over it by now!

20th February, 2014

My grandson would love to try this product as he is 15 and just getting to the greasy skin stage and pimples with oily skin

20th February, 2014

20th February, 2014

Sorry no signs of acne so no use trialling this product.

20th February, 2014

I am in my 30s and still suffer from hormone spots but nothing I can't live with. I hope these products help those that need them and look forward to reading the reviews

20th February, 2014

Also to add to my comment i have tried proactive before ! as advice to anyone who is considering using it my honest opinion to you is to not try it . it did not clear up my skin and was so harsh and drying on the skin , it even bleached all my bathroom towels when i wiped my face dry after washing it ! pretty much all my towels ended up with the bleached patches on them ! i would hate to think what it was actually doing to my face if it was bleaching the colour out of my towels !

20th February, 2014

I have slight acne and nothing works! Clearasil, clean & clear, neutrogena, I've even tried Proactiv and it doesn't even work! Would love to be given the chance to try something new and improved :~)
