Acne

Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

Hi BR team, I have a younger sister in her teens who is battling acne & we were just about to trial Proactive in a few weeks but I am reluctant to get proactive because I had a bad experience with it. Anyway this has come around at the perfect time as she has tried everything from changing her diet, and changing from product to product every few months. Anyway I hope I can be considered because if this was to work for my sister it would be so life changing! I also have the regular break out every now and then & if possible I would also like to trial this because I would have nothing to lose right? :) thanks for the opportunity & fingers crossed! xx

"am *now getting" - should have proof read haha

At 28 I am not getting spots on my chest and shoulders - What. The. Hell. I don't know how to get rid of them; they dont even have heads sometimes, they are just red and angry! I'd freaking LOVE to try something to get rid of them :(

My skin lately has changed from dry to combination. My forehead gets really oily which sucks because I have a fringe that needs to be washed everyday. I suffer from the occasional breakout, and when I do, my pimples are usually large, very swollen, and red. They have been known to last for up to two weeks and will most definitely scar, just like any other blemishes on my body. I have a really bad habit of picking and squeezing them once they 'erupt' on my face, but several times I have forced myself to not touch my pimples and they scar all the same. I am sick of the scarring, and in the past, I have used tea tree oil products to try and fade the scarring but I was young and naive and had no patience. However it does mean that I have grown to love the smell of tea tree oil, which many others can't stand. Lately I have been getting a few pimples on my back and shoulders too, and as well as being super unattractive, it's also very painful. I have tried many pimple creams and have yet to found one that targets and soothes my big hard pimples, and so I can do nothing but just wait for the pimple to recede and scars to appear. My boyfriend suffers from more breakouts than me, and he has super oily skin. He also has a habit at poking his pimples, but unlike me, he doesn't scar. His brother, however, has typical teenage skin. He is always in the middle of a breakout which spans his entire face, especially his t-zone. He (like many teenage boys) has to be reminded to wash his face, and tends to have a poor diet and hygiene skills. If these products will help his face clear up and helps to fade my scars, then my faith in pimple treatments will be restored.

I have a teenage son who suffers from acne. I myself had bad acne at his age and he is suffering the same as I once did. I went on medication for mine and I would like for him to find something that would work instead of medication. He has pale skin like me and my red hair, it would be great for him to not to have acne so there is less for the bullies to pick on him at high school.

My daughter is 13, I have sensitive skin and have never had the problem of acne and so I am unexperienced in what skin care products to purchase for my daughter. Unfortunate for her, she has her fathers skin :( and being a male, he couldn't care less. Her pimples are forming along her hairline, nose and chin. I am after a product that she can stick to during her teenage years. Presently she does not use any products on her skin and uses Dove facial wash every morning. I'd love to help her keep her acne under control before scarring occurs. Help please.

I love to be included for this trial. Its not for me though, its for my teen son. He's been having acne and its not a good sight esp for teenagers. I like to try something that will work and yet not too harsh. For boys, you can't really hide the acne through make-up so as early as now I'd like him to develop the habit of caring for his skin. Maybe if he sees good results, he will listen to mum and we'll both be happy to find the right product for keeps. I hope we get to be chosen.

I've had acne ever since I can remember. I can only dream of having clear skin.. I have tried almost everything including proactiv, which just made my skin worse. I'm almost 25, and sick of these spots. Also my scarring is quite bad, although I am a master at covering them up now! Would really appreciate a chance to try something I havent tried before.

I'm 20, and still suffer severely from acne due to having a condition called PCOS, as well as mild hypothyroidism. I constantly have terrible breakouts, and they always scar as well. I must have spent hundreds of dollars on products to try and help my acne, but to date, nothing has worked.

20th February, 2014

I have always been cursed with the dreaded random giant spot. Certain times I get several at once. And at my age - 27 - I'm yet to find a product that doesn't dry my poor tired skin out completely or leave me with a shiney face either from harsh chemicals or oils. Even if I don't get to trial this brand, I'm looking forward to reading the reviews to see if its worth purchasing and giving it a go :)

My acne comes and goes, now days it is limited to manly my face. My daughter has bouts of acne mainly around the face and neck. We both tend to drink a lot of water which I think helps improve our skin. We seem to be more prone to pimples based on what we eat or what the weather is like i.e. hot and sticky.

19th February, 2014

I am 24 and constantly have at least one or 2 pimples on my face, painful ones in hideous places like beside my nostril or under my chin or lip. Also on my back and shoulders :S so not sexy!

My teenage brother also suffers from very bad face and bacne acne and had a consultation for going on medication but was unable due to the risk of side effects.

19th February, 2014

My 14 year old daughter has pretty bad acne, I have taken her to the doctor for it and he put her on some tablets, he said they were mild but they did nothing! I brought her sebamed cleanser and a oil free moisturiser, she has asked me to get her proactive but I have heard its not that good and really dries out your skin. My daughter has been bullied at school because of her skin, she has a disability and has a tick and always rubs her face so I dont know if much will work anyway

19th February, 2014

My dry skin takes me surprise by giving me constant and undesirable acne. Which is not good for any 17 year old. I hate it. Plus the heat this summer has made me break out further! I want to break these break outs of mine. I am willing to try anything! Please help

19th February, 2014

I am 25 years and have been suffering from adult acne for approximately 5 years. I have tried proactive, expensive branded products, doxycycline, retrieve cream and have just been prescribed isotretonin (check out my post in the forum). My latest prescription has had dramatic effects on my skin with it being dry, patchy, scaly, red and sensitive. I'm struggling to find products to use and would love to give this a go!
