Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

I am 30 and have PCOS which cause hormone breakouts around the chin area. They are usually very sore and hot more like large pimples. I only get them once a month but they are horrid. At 30 you wouldnt expect to be getting this. I currently use witch hazel when the spots start to come out until they are gone and this seems to keep the redness down to a minimum but would love to find something that can help to clear them.

I'm in my 40's and have had oscillating degrees of acne since high school. I've tried a number of different 'complete solutions' (from supermarket cheapies to a ridiculously expensive French brand). None have been effective and some have even sensitised my skin for a time.

I don't wear foundation now because it seems to highlight and exacerbate the worst areas (chin and jawline). I really don't believe the sales pitches any more and have pretty much resigned myself to simply living with it. Other people have to live with far worse deformities and I'm lucky my 'ill health' is limited to pimples :o )

My daughter is pregnant. She is 25 yrs old and has developed acne on her back and chest area. It is getting her down and she has tried some other products but they made her skin very red and itchy. I have just spoken with her and she would be happy to trial anything which may help her and would give me feedback for you.

My son is 16 and does suffer from acne. He does a lot of sport and nothing I buy off the shelf seems to help. I would appreciate being picked so my son could trial these products for you. We have used Plantation Island products in the past especially the tea tree for all sorts of things and have found it to be very good . Would love to trial this .

Oh boy do we know about Acne in our household. I suffered terribly as a teenager and now three of my teenage children have very visible acne on the face, chest and back. They have tried a few different products with limited success. So a chance to trial Thursday Plantation products would be great not only for the acne sufferers but would give mums wallet a small rest :)

I would be interested in trialling these products, I have actually considered them before as I use pure tea tree on my face as required and I am keen to share with my son

I am 26 and have had acne for 15 years now, trying almost every product under the sun to try and get rid of it but nothing seems to work for long, as soon as a product runs out I'm out trying a different type. Like others I've tried prescription meds and suffered the awful side effects, but lately I've considered visiting my GP to go back on them because it's been so long now. I'm currently using the Cetaphil gentle cleanser but it just doesn't feel like it's strong enough for my skin. I also have that horrid habit which comes with bad skin of wearing makeup every day to cover it up because it affects my confidence so much, hopefully this will be the year where I find something which really works!

18th February, 2014

Both my brother and I suffer from varying types of acne/bad skin - he has bad t-zone acne on his face where as I suffer from "bacne" in the heat of summer or the times of the year that I am exercising alot. We both have not ever found a product that has been a 100% solution to these acne problems, so trialling these products would be very interesting and hopefully very beneficial to the both of us!

I am 21 and have ALWAYS suffered from facial acne since hitting puberty at age 11. Over the years it seems to have gotten worse not better and I have had enough of the constant soreness and embarrassment. There will be a few days of the month where my face is clear, and the other days I either have a huge outburst all at once or the odd few really painful ones. I have tried everything going, from diet, to proactive (which blistered my face) to prescribed medication. Would love to find something that actually worked and not only made the current ones go away but something that stopped them from developing. Would love to try these products, however if I don't get to opportunity to - best of luck to those that do - I really hope they work and make a difference to someones skin x

I am in my 40's and I still suffer from sporadic breakouts and would love to find a product that is gentle yet effective. My trouble spots include my upper back and it's so frustrating.I also have enlarged pores and some permanent white bumps (whiteheads??) on my face and neck which get worse the more tanned I get. It would be great to get rid of them! It would be bliss to finally be more clear skinned and feel confident make up free.

18th February, 2014

I have a couple of teens. My son is 19 and has a forehead full of acne. My daughter is 14 and has just started getting pimples. My son has tried a few things in the past but hasn't helped.

18th February, 2014

I'm in my 30's and still suffer from acne! It is really horrible. I 've tried to eat healthier as well as drink heaps of water, but somehow I still get the breakouts! : (

18th February, 2014

My Daughter started high school this year. she has only been there 3 weeks and people are already commenting about her pimples which is mean. we have tried off the super market shelf face washes, but its not working. I really feel for her, I was the same at her age.
