Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

I currently have lots of acne although i didnt have much when i was teenager. Dont know what causes. I really want something that could help because having pimples at this age is so hard to clear the scars, as your skin doesnt restore as fast as before (Im at mid 20s). I have heard about tee tree work well on acne skin but havent tried before, and i would love to try this set.

I'm 32, and up until this past year have only suffered from the occasional spot, but lately it's like my face has decided to make up for all those years when I didn't have any spots. Needless to say I have tried numerous facewashes and have not been happy with any of them, it's gotten to a stage where I actually don't know what to try any more. I pretty much suffer from every type of acne, black heads, little white ones, and those big nasty under the skin volcano type ones. Right now I'm using Neutrogena simply for the fact that I have given up. I would love to try this range, as I have heard tea tree is really effective with acne, but I again haven't tried any tea tree products because I wouldn't know where to start with the brands that are out there.

I get horrible acne all year round nothing I use helps get rid of it pretty embarrassed about it already

Hello! My sister is 18 and has been suffering from acne since the age of 13 or 14. She has scarring, not just from picking at them, which takes long to heal. I have advised her not to use super market products as it does dry the skin out more but she keeps using them. Tea tree has many benefits and would probably make a difference. It is worth a try :).

Omg I'm having major problems at the moment after having great skin since I went on the pill. Now that I've stopped that my skin has gone to s#%t, my other half has problems with acne as well and we are both in our 30's kinda sucks really :(

I do suffer from acne, but not on my face. It is all over my back instead, huge spots with nothing in them. The only thing that has worked so far is going on a raw food diet for a month (which I couldn't keep to).

I've just turned 20 and have never really had bad skin, but since mid last year my skin has gone crazy, anything and everything will make me break out. So I am still on the hunt for the 'perfect products'. I've tried cheaper products, expensive products, supermarket, big skincare brands, you name it i've probably tried it. My brother also suffers from 'teenage acne' and is in need of the perfect product fix. So will be a two in one usage/review!

I'm 35 and suffer from random breakouts. I often end up with black heads and bumpy skin. Also my skin is sensitive so makes it hard to find products that don't irritate.

I'm 24 and get bad bad breakouts on my t zone. I've tried a lot of acne products including proactive and would Love to give something else a go. My skin is dry under my eyes and on my cheeks then my nose chin and forehead get oily throughout the day. I have my worst breakouts on my chin where everyone can see them,

Current teenager myself and having eczema hasn't helped with occasionally getting acne, especially when it gets really hot (and presumably I get more oily and there acne develops :L gross) and doctors have tried prescription meds on me, and on my brother who has really bad acne, but to be honest they usually get worse after the medicines so I've stopped that. I've tried people's recommendations for skincare products too but I think mainstream products have really abrasive ingredients or something because that makes me break out too. Any gentle product that is fine for sensitive skin, I'm willing to try. Anything to try clear up this skin!

Im just into my forties and still suffer the odd breakout. My daughter who is almost 14 has just started to get acne and they are quite big and angry looking (the spots not the kid.... well, sometimes the kid, lol) , poor thing. Ive given her paw paw ointment to try but need to find a good face wash for her as her skin seems quite oily too. She has a friend that that suffers really badly and would be excellent for this trial as she is currently putting toothpaste on her spots!!

i am 16 and I have been on almost every type of medication there is for acne - i had it really bad on my back and face . finally my dermatologist almost two years prescribed me with oratane (there are other variations of this medication and different names for it) and i was on it for about a year . in a few months my back had completely cleared up and slowly my face started to as well , and everything was pretty much cleared up in time for my ball last year which was a bonus . but a big side effect of the medication can be mood swings and dry skin , and extremely dry lips . my lips were pretty much raw the whole medication course . finally able to get off the medication a few months ago , everything was all cleared up , but recently over the summer to now my face has been going down hill and in pretty bad condition which is a shame after all that time on the medication , so would be really keen to try all of these out :)

My daughter has just started Intermediate and I feel for her, her whole T Zone is (please excuse the expression) a mess! For the past year we have been trying Neutrogena products and they do not seem to be making any difference, she has a combination of spots and lots of blackheads, you can see and feel all the little all the bumps. She eats well and drinks plenty of water (since our household is a no fizzy zone), it's really frustrating and I don't want her to be bullied because of it, any help in this area would be most appreciated :)

I am 30 and still suffer with really bad acne. I grew up hating school photos and ended up on some really strong facial creams to try and settle my skin. I thought it would just be a teenage problem, but it has followed me well into adulthood. It is definitely worse at that time of the month, but I am very rarely without pimples. And not just small patches unfortunately, they're large painful ones on my face. I find it so embarrassing and would love to try something to see if it makes a difference!

18th February, 2014

I had troublesome skin as a teenage which has left some scarring. Now, I tend to have sporadic acne episodes- particularly around period time. My problem areas tend to be my neck and forehead. Although my skin is at times clear, I have permament whitehead type acne. I have no idea what this actually is but would love a product that would m as

Yeah, I find Oratene's side effects aren't for the long term and acne very quickly returns with a vengeance just when you think you're done with it and can stop the medication. Keeping the skin clean and hydrated helps a lot from experience :)

Hi Rhiannon, you could try exfoliation but with a mild scrub which contains jojoba beads.
