Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

Miss 15 would love to be considered for this trial. She eats good nutritious food, drinks loads of water, has great personal hygiene and yet still suffers from the occasional outbreaks of acne. She has tried numerous different products but we haven't found anything yet that gives consistently good results

I get breakouts on monthly basis and sometimes in between. But for the most part I don't break out much. I do have some younger sisters and brothers in their teens who suffer acne. I think they would be happy to participate in this trial if the skincare worked.

Im 25 and a mother of 2. I have crazy facial acne, and doesn't help I have dry skin too. I get bad acne around my chin and down my neck around my hair line. Ive tried hiding behind makeup but I know that makes it worse. Ive tried outer products from super markets but the all dry my skin out. At the moment im trying anything to help me.

I'm 19 currently and my skin is clear apart from the odd pimple (I think I'm having a bad time when I have 5 pimples on my face), which is completely fantastic, however my younger brother (17) suffers from really really bad acne everywhere so this could be a really good trial for him. He has tried many products to help battle it and nothing is working all that well. Would love this for him!

I am 25 years old and had never had a problem with my skin until 9 months ago when my son was born. I now have oily skin and constant breakouts. I would love to be on this trial team as my skin is really bringing my confidence down and it would be great to try a new product that hopefully might show some results.

My skin has never been perfect and during my teens I felt very self conscious.

I now have a teenage boy and it would be great to deal with this now so he doesn't have to live another ten or so years worrying about his appearance.

I'm very interested in this trial. Thank you :)

I have two teens, a boy and a girl. My daughter is really struggling with it at the moment as she has tried so many products and they don't seem to make much difference. She is at that age where she is really embarrassed by it, sometimes doesn't even want to go to school when she has a particularly bad breakout.

This is amazing! I don't suffer from acne but i really hope these products help you ladies that get picked :)

I have suffered from acne for many years. My forehead and my chin is usually always covered in them. 2 of my sisters (aged 24 & 12) both get bad facial acne too, and my other sister (aged 23) suffers from severe back acne. We have tried so many different products but are yet to find a holy grail acne product. For the spot treatments we've all been using dermaid cream from the chemist and it's helping a lot, but for $16 for a 15ml tube, it's very expensive and it's just not lasting. Would really, really love to trial these products, and I know that my younger sister would too. She's always embarrassed to go to school now because of her acne and it's incredibly heart breaking watching her suffer. I would love nothing more than to help my sister feel comfortable in her own skin, and to hopefully vanish the horrible acne so she can start to enjoy going to school again. And for myself, this would be such an awesome trial to be a part of. Acne has played a huge part in my own insecurities, and I'm sick of having to try and hide them with my awful looking side fringe, which on hot days ends up leaving me with more due to sweating. Acne is such a common thing, so hopefully whoevrt is lucky enough to trial these products, gives a thorough, fully detailed review so everyone else can have a fair idea on if that's what they think they need for their own acne problems and it actually working so they don't end up wasting more money on gimmick products xxx

I am 29 years old and been suffering from acne. It has been worse the last few months with more breakouts around my chin and on the t-zone. I have been trying different products to clear my skin but feel some products may even irritate my skin more. It is such a confidence killer! I want my lovely skin back.

They are normally big and blind for about a week before they get a head on them. They are very embarassing. I have tried many products but I also get allergic to the perfumes in alot of products so can't use them grrrrrr frustrating
