Acne

Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

I'm 19 and suffer from oily skin and breakouts, and have since I was about 13. I've tried SO many face washes that claim to prevent/clear acne and a lot of the time they just irritate my skin and break me out further. My most problem areas are generally around my chin and forehead, but recently I've been experiencing some pimples on my cheeks too which sucks! I'd love to try out these Tea Tree products and see if they can change my skincare routine forever :)

I would love to be in the trial, not for me but my 14 year old son who is getting acne, especially round the top lip, nose area and on his head, near his hair line, we are trying Clearasil products at the moment, so this would be great for him to see if it works any better.

Patcharee would love the opportunity to test these products. She has tried a number of products and just keeps getting those multiple nasty pimples and a few big ugly ones.

I have two boys - one 12 and one 13 who are starting to get pimples in ALL places. It would be great for them to trial these products as it would teach them the importance of looking after their skin.

I did not have pimples generally as a teen, however seem to get some horrid ones as an adult. I would love to trial this as I have tried everything to get rid of them.

I have 3 teenagers who unfortunately suffer from really bad acne aged 13-18. It's really hard to find anything that really helps and if it does it costs a fortune. We have tried proactive it helps but because the teens acne is so bad it didn't clear it as it said it would my youngest is using baby wipes at the moment (another trial suggested by her cousin) but is still having break outs these kids are extremely sporty but the acne really dents their confidence so yes we would love to help with the trial. Thanks

I am 49 and have had pimples all my life - there wouldn't be a week without about five on my face. So frustrating as would really like to just look natural instead of using concealer on the spots.

I went on roaccutaine for a year about 10 years ago and that helped the bad ones but I still get the odd pesky annoying ones that seem to reappear in the same spots. I went to a naturopath and went on a blood and liver cleanser, stopped wheat in my diet and drank more water and it has helped a lot.

I would really like to see if this product helps. Thanks

My teenage son gets acne from time to time so is I'm always on the look out for good products to help him out

I suffer from acne and so does my 14 year old son and my 12 year old daughter, I would love to be involved in this trial and I'm sure Cambell and Eden would be able to give a good review from a younger persons point of view!

im 31 and have tried everything since I was 14 and first got acne. its like I only go a day of being clear then I get it bad again. I work with kids and yet feel like one myself due to acne. I also cant hide it with make up as my skin is sensitive. .. if I was chosen for thos trial it would change my life and give me the confidence I've never had...

I am 25 and I started getting acne after I had my son 5 years ago. I never had it when I was a teenager! I can't remember the last time I had completely clear skin :( they get quite painful and bleed. I've used a lot of face washes, creams etc but I've given up trying to find something that works because I hate wasting money. I barely wear foundation anymore because it looks all bumpy and gross on me :( my partner gets it worse than me, he's had it for 14 years and has to take $80 medication which still doesn't completely take it away. Acne sucks! I would love to try these products to hopefully get rid of it and gain my confidence back.

I have been on Accutane (isotretinoin) 3 times over many years and still suffer from adult acne. I would like to be able to try some sort of natural solution , even if it does not address the root cause of the problem

18th February, 2014

I had almost amazing skin as a teenager - the odd wee pimple but nothing to get excited about, fast forward and the day I hit 30 I swear my skin changed so much - it started with the odd pimple coming up around when my period was due, and now it's a face full of horrible sore pimples and red spots. I have noticed that since turning 30 (I'm nearly 32 now) that my skin in general is a lot oilier - it's kind of like teenage skin eek! This isn't exactly how I pictured this phase of my life. I do find that the breakouts get worse when it is coming up to my period and would love to be able to put this all behind me - having acne doesn't help with feeling confident about yourself no matter what age you are!

I would love to trial these products as I'm so sick and tired of having this hormonal acne. I have been using some products that have helped alleviate some of it, but it just seems to always come back. I've heard that tea tree has many healing qualities and would love to see how well they work with my skin and whether they can be the product I've always been searching for.

I can highly recommend Duac. It is prescription once daily gel. Keep smiling. You are all beautiful.

17th February, 2014

I am 30 and still get acne, so over it, wish i had beautiful adult skin haha. Have tried clearasil and some other products but i think they may be aimed at the young teens. Just would love to be apart of this trial.
