Acne

Acne. We all get it, but what’s the underlying cause of it? Could it be more than just changing hormones during that time of the month? Or what about the dreaded “bacne” that seems to always creep its way onto our skin during the most oh-so-convenient times? If you’re no stranger to getting unwelcomed visitors on your face, back, and everywhere in between, read on to learn a little bit more about what causes it and what you can do to vanish it.

Causes of Acne

Whether you’re a teenager just hitting puberty or you’re more mature and well into your 30s, 40s, and even 50s, acne can hit at any time. Adolescents may notice pesky blemishes due to their rising levels of the hormone androgen. This hormone causes the oil glands in the skin to enlarge, which then causes more oil to grow. When there is an overload of oil, the pore walls break down, making a clear pathway for bacteria (and acne) to grow.

While this is known to be the common cause of acne, there are other possible causes that are worthy of mentioning, such as genetics, harmful chemicals in cosmetics, poor skincare routine, and those filthy makeup brushes you keep putting off washing (hey, we’ve all been there!)

Who Gets Acne?

Feel like you’re alone when it comes to having pesky pimples invade your face? You’re not! While acne is more common in teenagers, it can also hit men and women who are middle-aged and even newborns.

Adult Acne

If you thought your acne days were over once you hit 30, think again. Adult acne is extremely common, and the causes are very similar to the ones previously mentioned: excess amounts of sebum attract bacteria and thus clog pores. When it comes to women, this is quite common during pregnancy and menopause. And while most over-the-counter acne-fighters are geared toward teenage skin, all hope is not lost for adults. Try incorporating a mild cleanser and exfoliator into your daily skincare routine. Also, a retinol product not only help treat acne, but it can minimize the common signs of aging as well. If you simply need to spot-treat a pimple, opt for something that contains benzoyl peroxide, an acne-fighting ingredient that’s known to treat blemishes quickly.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Most of the time, that unsightly pimple, also known as mild acne, will go away on its own. To reduce redness and swelling, try applying a paper towel-covered ice cube on it for a few minutes. You can also test out some over-the-counter medicine that contain salicylic acid or sulfur in it, acne-fighting ingredients that work to minimize blackheads and prevent pores from getting clogged.

Retin-A is another common way to treat acne. With its ability to unclog pores, which could lead to further breakouts if not treated, Retin-A is rich in Tretinoin, an acid that helps treat acne and also prevents skin from aging.

Have dry skin? Steer clear of over-the-counter medicines that are high in alcohol, such as those that are in gel form, as this can further dry out your skin and cause flakiness. On the other hand, if your skin is oily, gels may work for you.

If your skin is no stranger to pimples, blemishes, and breakouts (oh my), then you may have what is known to be severe acne. In this case, going to a dermatologist is your best bet, as they may prescribe you with a medicine, be it oral or topical, that can help get rid of the acne.

How to Avoid Getting Acne

No matter what age you are, it’s important to take preventative measures when it comes to keeping bacteria off of your skin. For one, get into the habit of washing your hands regularly. Think about all of the things you do and touch throughout the day: shake hands, hold doorknobs, touch food. All of the bacteria and germs that are on each of those things then get transmitted onto your skin if you don’t wash your hands, thus creating infection.

Also, be wary about what you put on your face. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels of different beauty products and educate yourself on what is doing more harm to your skin than good.

Finally, always make sure you’re hydrated. Skin feeds off of water, and when it’s properly hydrated it’ll thank you!

Whether you’re a teenager or adult, there’s no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about having acne. Remember that everyone gets it at some point in their lives, and that educating yourself on the causes and preventative measures you can take is key.

Argh acne is the worst! I'm 29 and still always have pimples on my chin and jaw - they have gone from the top half of my face now though thankfully! I love tea tree oil, it's my favourite acne spot treatment and I've tried EVERYTHING!

What an awesome article! I'm 27, and is currently struggling with adult acne. Never struggled with my skin until I hit my mid 20s, my seems to be linked with stress and clogged pores.. I have entered this to try and find a solution for my ongoing acne issues, I have almost exhausted the supermarket branded 'miracle' product but nothing seems to work for me.

I have 16 and often get acne even though I have dry skin. I get into a good routine to keep my skin acne free, like washing my hands regularly and washing my face twice a day but I still constantly get them. Sometimes if I am stressed like during exams I tend to get them everywhere, especially on my forehead and my chin. Most of the time I just use toothpaste on them, but they take about a week to clear up.

I am 16 and suffer from severe acne on my face, and common breakouts on my back in between my shoulder blades. Its at the point where it leave scars no matter what I do, even if I just leave them to burst or go away on their own terms.

My battle with acne has been a long and emotional one I must say, I remember the first time that it even came up. I was in primary school at swimming sports, when a bunch of kids asked why I had "mosquito bites all over my back" It was hard to answer something I was so unsure of myself. From then on I covered myself every mufti day/swimming day we had at school. Fortunately High school was fine and I thought I had left the faze of pink dots behind me, not the case! My last year In high school after being sick, those pink dots had come back again and began to spread! It was hard being 18 starting a new journey in my life and having to wake up with a new spot here and there, makes you want to just really curl up in a ball and stay at home, especially when people make comments about it! For the past two years I have been hunting high and low for a cure, something that will stop me from screaming "WHY GOD WHY" or having to base my whole outfit choice off of "Oh no cant where that, my spots will show." Its a hard and embarrassing topic to talk about, but I know Im not alone!

I am 21, I thought my acne was going away for about a year, but since 4 months ago it has come back in a horrible way. It tends to get worse the week before and the week during my period. Annoyingly I'm getting a lot of those spots that are really deep in the skin but leave giant painful red lumps on the surface, in some ways I find them more unsightly then the pus filled ones that usually surround them. I've tried a lot of products over the years but none have made much of a difference, so if these ones do, I'd love to find out!

I had never had a single pimple until I turned about 21, now I constantly get them which sucks! I also find it hard to find a great produce as I typically have such dry skin and don't want to dry it out even further.

I am in my forties, and have suffered from acne all my life, I regularly go on a course of isotane to keep it under control, but it always creeps back! I would love to find a product other than medication that actually works, I have tried every other acne product and none of them actually work!!! Would love to give this a go and see results!

OMG I was just talking to my son about his acne in the car on the way to school this morning - he is 16 and has had really bad acne since he was 12. We finally went to the Dr and they allowed him to have Oratane (a pretty awful drug) once he turned 13. He has been on and off this for the past 3 years. He has also used Cetaphil. Just recently we have tried Tea Trea Face Wash for Acne and he said that seems to be helping. It may be better to use all of the above products at the same time. I do have to remind him to cleanse his skin twice a day (not much fun for boys). We would love for him to give the above products a trial - he would do it by the book - something like a trial he becomes quite obsessive about completing correctly!! Hopefully Thursday Plantation can solve his acne problems once and for all

My skin has finally (mostly) cleared up at age 37, and I swear by Tea Tree products! My 16 (going on 17) daughter is going through exactly the same stages I did at her age.. would love to have her trial it to get the deep seated acne and old scarring under control. She has anxiety as a result of her acne flare ups, would be great to find a product range that will give her a lift in spirits!

I'm 14 atm and my pimples are horrible normal teenager acne! On my back it's horrible too! I would love to give this a try as I want to see how these work and if they are good for oily skin as I have extremely oily skin that I have to battle with constantly especially at that time of the month, that's when it's the worst :( I'm trying other products at the moment, but they aren't working unfortunately and it's embarrassing going to school with lots of acne and people laughing at you, this would be a great opportunity to try a more natural way :) xox

I am 28 and had really bad acne in my teens. It went away for a while but has come back now and it really flares up around my monthly cycle. Am currently trying the Essona Rosehip Oil trial pack from the supermarket as I have been reading that oil on oily skin can be quite healing. Am trying everything and nothing has really worked as a great overall regime so far so would love to trial a more natural type of skincare. Have been stripping my skin with Proactive for years but I don't think it has been very good for me.

I stopped believing in miracles, but until I find what really works for me, I will try all promising things on the market! So yes, please put me in that hat and draw my name!;)

16th February, 2014

I'm 33 and have had skin issues on and off my whole life... I get bouts of acne linked to stress and metabolic issues (I have hypothyroid disorder) and while I'm pretty good with skincare Í still haven't found the miracle regime...so yes please, I'd love this!
