"I'll just go powder my nose' said many a starlet, in many a classic film. And out of their clutch would appear a beautiful, decorative compact, with their favourite powder inside.
One of my favourite films is Rebel Without a Cause. And despite being 65 years old the film is still relatable (and James Dean is still hot). Except for one small plot point. The interaction between the leads is fueled by a makeup compact. An ornate, floral compact that back in the 50s a girl wouldn't be without and yet today, a teenager, or even a lady, would rarely be seen with.
Is it that we've moved away from face powders? Or do we just favour the cheap case our favourite powders come in? Maybe. Or maybe we've forgotten just how gorgeous an accessory a compact can be.
And on that thought, a BR mission was actioned. Here's some of the stunning compacts available - and no, they won't (all) set you back a small fortune!
Estee Lauder Zodiac Compact -$70
These gorgeous compacts are embellised with crystals and include a mirror for on-the-go touch ups. They fit any Estee Lauder powder refill, meaning you can use it for your translucent powder or even your bronzer!
Charles Malloy Peacock - $240
A little on the pricy side yes, but you have to admit this is stunning! And it's available as a double mirror compact, or a powder and mirror compact. If you choose the latter it comes with a removable sifter and puff.
Check out the complete Charles Malloy range - a girl can dream right?
Jane Iredale Refillable Compact - $30
We love the sleek, classy design of this compact - it can be used across the Jane Iredale range and features a large mirror. It's also made with recyclable, eco-friendly materials
Urban Decay De-Slick Compact - $45
Here's something a little less dainty - Urban Decay's De-Slick mattifying powder comes in a luxe Lucite compact with a pretty-but-edgy design.
Stratton Lace Vogue Compact - $75
This is a vintage piece from the 1950s - so for something a little special it's well worth keeping an eye out at auction houses and vintage stores.
Benefit Some Kind of Gorgeous - $57
Ah isn't this why we love Benefit? Perfect for the quirky girl who likes her beauty products to be...fun!
Guerlain Meteorites Range -$100
The Meteorites range of powders all come in stunning compacts featuring the Guerlain rosette. Our favourite is the Voyage pictured above, but a quick Google image search will have you wanting them all - and the good news is they're all refillable!
Tan Organic Bronzer Duo - $50
A refillable, eco friendly, handbag proof wooden compact. Pretty cool hey?
Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick Compact - $110
If the reason we don't use compacts as often now is that we don't touch up our face powder as often, how about this for a modern twist? We all touch up our lippie right?! It's described as 'the ultimate accessory of mystery and seduction.'
Do you have a special compact you refill? Or are you not a compact girl...yet? Which of these catches your eye?
I love compacts but wouldn't spend anymore than $20 on one! These are beautiful.
