I love watching beauty gurus. They're fun, they're sassy, they'll try looks that I wouldn't in a million years. Fabulous looks, featuring all the colours of the rainbow. Beauty gurus are bold. They're outrageous. They're trendsetters. But...are they out of touch?
You see, recently I've noticed there are trends and cosmetics that the beauty gurus I watch adore, and it seems like every video they're promoting the same style, the same form of application, the same product; creating looks that I've not seen emulated in the real world.
It's got me thinking... is it me? Am I too basic? Are other beauties embracing the beauty guru's recommendations? So what are these looks, these products that have me flummoxed? Read on...
Duochrome Eyeshadow
Whenever I see a swatch of a duochrome eyeshadow, my inner-magpie flaps its wings and oohs and aahs. Naturally, I had to buy a palette that contained one, and the result was... disappointing. With a green to pink shift, it looked dark on my eye. Too dark. And... strange. Out of place. As quickly as I applied it, I removed it, never to wear it again.
Would I try a lighter duochrome eyeshadow? I want to say yes, but honestly, I just think for me it's too bold to be beautiful.
Rainbow Eyeshadow
As regular readers of Beauty Review know, we're all about you doing you. What you put on your face is perfectly wonderful. Still, I have to wonder... is anyone going full rainbow? I see so many beauty gurus regularly digging into bright and beautiful palettes, creating intricate, eye-catching looks, but are they being replicated by the masses? Or is the proliferation of rainbow eyeshadow palettes being bought by makeup artists and beauty gurus only?
Graphic Eyeliner
I own two shades of eyeliner - black and brown. I once tried a forest green, but it felt too dramatic. Yes, I'm that basic. But am I alone in that? Day after day, I'm seeing the gurus take bright pink, blue or yellow eyeliners, and using them create graphic eyeliner looks on their brow bones, under their eyes, around the inner corners. Inspirational? Yes. Realistic? I'm not so sure...
Lip Products Galore
What I would give to see what lip liner, topped with a base lipstick, topped with a lighter lipstick in the centre, topped with a gloss, and maybe a shimmery gloss on top for good measure, looks like in real life, minus the studio lighting, minus the filters. Is it a thick and heavy mess? Does it look good? Does it look blended? I mean, sure, I could try it myself, but who has the time to put that level of effort into your lips, when a quick swipe does the trick?
Ditto Brow Products
If you were to believe the beauty gurus, Instagram brows are still a thing. Pomade, pencil, powder, gel - they're loading their bushy (or not so bushy) beetles up. I can understand two products - maybe a pencil and gel. But three or four feels a touch over the top.
At the end of the day, I love that makeup brings them joy. I adore that it is a source of creativity. And I've nothing against it, as my screen time stats show. In fact, I'm a touch obsessed with watching people create art on their faces, but is anyone else outside of Beauty Land doing it? Are you?

I don't watch them anymore, I really only watch the Kardashians being glammed which is interesting in itself.
