Since she was old enough to sit up in a bath on her own, my daughter and I have made a ritual of bathing together. When pondering what to do for mama/daughter time, the first word out of her mouth is "spa?". And by "spa" she doesn't mean an an outdoors, burny hot spa, she means a spa event. We're talking the whole kit and spa caboodle - but, most importantly, it must feature bubble bath.
Yes, bubbles are the main event. They take your bog average bath and make them fun and fluffy. We pile them high, we laugh at each other's bubbly beards. We blow them around. We turn on our old-school 80s triangle bath's jets to see just how big the bubbles can go. And in between all that, we indulge in a little pampering. So much so I feel it's safe to say that after ten years of spa-ing together, we've got the art of spa down. So what are the must haves for a good bubble bath?
Candles
I'm all about the ambience, and a candle or five flickering around a bath, on the basin and/or the windowsill creates a truly relaxing mood during a mother/child spa day. More so if it throws a lush scent that'll have you believing that you're in a luxury hotel, and that outside the bathroom door there's not a tonne of vacuuming, washing and tidying to be done.
Mask
You may as well multi-task while in the bath, which is where skincare comes in. If I'm bubble bathing I'm also masking. While a sheetmask can be good on the days that you're rushing about getting other stuff done while trying to show your skin some love, in the bath I tend to prefer a wash-off mask, because there's one other thing that's hugely important if you're going to be a bathing bubbly beauty, and that's hydration. (Anyone who's ever tried to take a sip of something while wearing a sheet mask will know the horror of having the mask's tissue flip flap around your lips, followed by the serum infusing with your hydration source to form a taste that no person ought to endure. Bleurgh.)
Hydrate
Yes, a glass of water is super important as you lie back and release the woes and worries of the day, or to sip from in between splashing about sending bubbles up into the air just so you can watch them fall. Being a touch clumsy, and having experienced a whoopsydaisy with a glass in a bath, I prefer a plastic water bottle for safety's sake. Alternatively, you might want to enjoy a glass of something else, but keep in mind if it's alcoholic it will dry you out more, so it still pays to have water on hand.
Last, but never ever least, it's the most important part...
Bubbles
Which leads me to the big question...
Where's all the adult bubble bath?
The supermarket is awash with bubble baths for little ones - but often they're not all that bubbly, the bubbles die down quickly or they smell like a really bad cocktail that's guaranteed to give you the worst hangover you've ever had in your life. I don't want to drink that, nor do I want to breathe it in. What I want are big, fluffy bubbles with a non-kiddy scent. Ones that I don't have to travel to a mall to buy. I want to pick my fabulous adult bubble bath up in my groceries and be done with it. Sigh. As this seems to be an impossibility, our lastest bubble bath goodness is from The Bonbon Factory, which offered fluffy bubbles, skin loving ingredients, and the yummiest scent.
And that's it. That's how we bubble bath. If you're not sharing your bath with another, my only other suggestion would be to add in a book, podcast or music. Or you could meditate. But that's not for me in the bath - I'd end up meditating my way into stressing out about why I can't find adult bubble bath easily, and that stress is hardly a recipe for bubble bathing success!

I adore bubbles! But they always make my legs itchy, so I can only use gentle cleansers in the bath. I get my bit of bathtime luxury from scented candles and music. Heaven.
