Calling all Salon Snobs - can supermarket products ever cut it?

Poll posted by BR Natalie

We've all been there.  Sitting in the hair dressers chair, having our manes seen to when the inevitable question arises - "What are you using on your hair?".  Depending on the type of person you are, this question will either fill you with interest, or it will fill you with the fear of having to turn down a sales pitch.

But is your hairdresser just stating a simple fact - that their "salon quality" products really are better for your hair than your average "beauty aisle" purchase?  Can the ingredients be that different and can these professional products ever really justify the price tag?

If you answered yes to those two questions then you might be interested in this Beauty Review challenge!

As you know we've teamed up with Schwarzkopf to bring you a week of amazing trial opportunites, with each team trialing 3 or 4 products.  Products which Schwarzkopf say are salon quality products available from your local supermaket.

So we're going to be asking 10 self confessed salon snobs to give up their salon products and try one of the Essence Ultime ranges.  (Hey if it's good enough for Claudia Schiffer...)

If you are selected for this trial team you'll be able to pick which of the four Essense Ultime ranges best meets your needs;

Omega Repair

Diamond Colour

Biotin+ Volume

Crystal Shine

So - are you a salon snob?  Do you find you salon products more expensive, or can you really not put a price on quality?  What differences have you noticed in your hair since switching to salon products?

I have tried non salon products but they either make my hair too greasy or feel like a birds nest. I find supermarket shampoos lather lots but they dry my hair out. Then the conditioners are transparent and thin and just coat the hair with a greasy product which rinses out leaving dull lifeless flat hair. I like my hair to feel silky have lots of volume and shine without being greasy. I haven't found any products other than professional products that can do this. I don't understand why buying Wella in a supermarket is nowhere near as good as buying Wella in a salon. To be honest I have tried Schwarzkopf products purchased in a super market a while ago and was really disappointed, I do love their professional products though.

I usually just take my hairdressers advice, hence why I have salon brands.

I'd have to say I think I should save some money, so buy a supermarket brand only to be really disappointed and always go back to a salon brand - have found Redken and just love it. Would be very happy to find a cheaper supermarket brand that does the job I need. Supermarket brand seems to strip my colour really quickly and dries it out - never looks glossy

I oinly but supermarket ones bc thats all I can afford .. but have had salon ones as presents the odd time (joico / Kpak / Fudge) and can tell ya esp joico and Kpak is def alot better on ya hair and produces better results and the hair less Oily and lank .... i like those salons that have stuff on sale too (15- 30 for a twin pack) saving for a nice one myself

I've recently turned into a salon snob after years of being disappointed with the results of supermarket and department store brands. I've got extremely fine hair that is prone to dry ends. I've always found store bought products to little to counteract this and often contribute to the problem so have switched to salon products. I do find these really expensive though and am caught between the desire for healthy and smooth hair and the giant hole in my bank acc left by salon products. Needless to say, if there is a cheaper option offering the same results...I'm listening....

I've never found a supermarket product that looks after my hair the way Kerastase does. You can try and convince me but the score at the moment is Kerastase (3) Supermarket (Nil). I have naturally wavy hair that is coloured and affected by he drugs I take for my auto immune disease. The products would have to be pretty special to work with that lot to contend with.

I tend to be a salon snob as hairdressing is my trade, but would defently be rinterested to see what this stuff is like :-)

I have had good results from supermarket products and terrible ones from salon, but by and large you get what you pay for. I think the biggest difference is that confronted by rows and rows of products, I get all bewildered. It is most helpful to have an expert to advise you on which to choose. The salons and specialist shops have it all over the supermarket or department store in that regard.

I've recently started using salon quality and I've noticed a little difference, but not sure the price warrants it!

If a product works then I'll use it and stick with it regardless if it being a salon product or supermarket brand. I've found with online shopping products have become more affordable

Supermarket brands are usually not that great, but unfortunately I can't afford to be a salon snob. Gotta make do with what you can get, even if it's nothing brilliant.

Because I am forever living on a budget most of my hair care needs are just supermarket jobbies. What that being said the odd time I have brought from a Salon I cant say I noticed a huge difference...

Salon snob here...Sorry but I haven't found anything that does the same job as well as the high end Salon products; however I am open to be proven wrong

I find that salon brands often have really beautiful texture in their products, so at least in this respect they win out. But not all salon brands are created equal -- some of them do contain cheap fillers as well! So I'm open to comparing the Essence Ultime range to my favourites.

I go for natural shampoos and conditioners and hair treatments. I would say they are salon quality in the sense that they are pricey and you can't find them in your supermarket. I make sure I buy them when they are on sale so I don't have to pay full price when they aren't. I used to splurge on my hair in the past but some months back I started stepping up on spending on my hair products and getting more hair products. I want a healthier longer mane so I was willing to splurge. I only wash my hair twice a week to three times a week so shampoo and conditioners and hair treatments last me a long time. I have used supermarket brands in the past and they worked okay but since I switched to higher end natural products I haven't looked back. Also my hair doesn't fall out as much in the shower when I wash it when I use higher end brands.
