Are you getting enough beauty sleep?

We all know sleep is important for our health and our appearance.  Otherwise they wouldn't call it beauty sleep right?  But babies, work, Facebook, "just another episode of our latest Netflix fill" - the joys of life can, more often than not, be sleep stealers.

If we don't get enough sleep our skin suffers.  After a few nights missed sleep you'll probably show the signs - puffy eyes and sallow skin.  A regular routine of missed sleep and you're setting yourself up for dull skin, dark circles and fine lines.  Lack of sleep ages the skin.

How about some science?  When you don't get enough sleep your body releases cortisol (a stress hormone).  When you have a lot of cortisol floating around it will break down collagen - and that's what keeps your skin smooth, elastic and looking young.  Ergo persistant lack of sleep ages you.

There's lots of things we can and should do to promote healthy sleep - no screens in the boudoir, no caffiene after 2pm, going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on the weekend.  But let's be honest - sleep stealers are just so powerful, sticking to a sleep routine can be hard.  Adulting is hard.

So get chatting below and tell us - do you regularly get your 8 hours?  What keeps you up at night?  Is lack of sleep making you look old?  How many of us are actually getting our beauty sleep?

I find that if I sleep for more than 8 hours I feel horrible when I wake up, and burn out pretty quickly in the day. But also, if I get any less than 6 hours I'm a zombie by the end of the day! 8 hours of sleep is the perfect amount if you ask me

Sleep?! ... what is this thing you speak of? O_o I am a bit of a night owl and often my children are early risers... so sleep (or at least a decent amount of it) seems to be an all to distant memory :/

This is really interesting, I find my thoughts keep me up at night until early hours of the morning, along with my babies getting up through the night I would get 7 hours of broken sleep which I can cope with, this is why coffee keeps me running every day not to mention those cute warming cuddles from my babies <3

Aching hips (I have hip dysplasia and really bad in winter), a 3 & a half year old daughter who is sick at the moment and up several times a night (ending up in our bed) and sore neck and shoulders from my job (computers etc) - need a massage!! :) I get about 5-6 hours a night

I get on average 6 hours sleep. Working long days and early morning gym sessions are not conducive to 8 hours a night.

I am an early bird even when I went to bed 12am. I like to get up around 6am (no coffee added) so I don't waste my day. I can function on about 5 hours sleep anything less and I may be yawning all day and a bit heavy lidded but my mood generally stays on the big end of happy.

I usually get enough sleep most nights and fall asleep within seconds, as soon as I hit the pillow I'm out. But having young children means not always the best sleep, sometimes getting up 4 times a night can make it hard. I have to have my coffee around 3pm to keep me going, the kids get full on In the afternoon!

Sleep or no sleep I get puffy eyes regardless so even when I feeling bright eyed bushy tailed people still say "oh not enough sleep last night Koni"...hmmmmm yes not enough haha. My mind is just too busy with stuff that I don't fall asleep when I'd like too.

I usually get my 8 hrs sleep. But with my work starting at 10 am it means I get up and go to sleep later which is probably not the best for my body ! I get very easily distracted watching TV or Netflix or reading that i loose track of time leading to late sleeping time !

This explains my fine lines. 8 hours sleep is not a regular thing for me. I'm either studying, reading a good book and don't notice the time, or stressing over something and as such don't go to sleep till late. I need to cut books out of life at nighttime I think.

8th August, 2016

We usually go to bed around 9.30 and watch a bit of TV. Husband is usually snoring in about 5 minutes flat so I have that to contend with. My mind ticks over, thinking about the days conversations, the days work, tomorrows work, and the kids, even though they are all independent, they are still on my mind!..

8th August, 2016

I usually go to sleep around midnight and get up at 7am. I love my tv :)

Sadly, between menopause and thyroid I either sleep around the clock or not at all. Just getting a straight 8 is pretty difficult...

8th August, 2016

I don't function well without sleep. It's very rare i don't manage to get enough sleep, for the safety of the people in my house and for my sanity it is a high priority I get enough sleep otherwise the dragon rises!

8th August, 2016

I should be getting more sleep but I am definitely not. Evening my time to chill guilty free and it's when I do all my beauty stuff, face masques, wash my hair, body scrub, bath, paint my nails and write and read reviews on here and watch stuff. The ironic is while I'm trying to make myself more beautiful I'm making myself more tired. I'm pretty sure my cortisol levels are at an unhealthy high.

Don't you hate that? I get really annoyed when someone tells me I look tired - especially when the night before was the best sleep I've had in ages!
