Are You High on Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyal-.  Hyaluron. Higheruron-. I don’t know how much the girls get paid to say that word on the beauty ads, but it’s not enough. But what’s the deal with this unpronounceable word? Why is it all the rage? Where did it come from anyway? And do we need it?

Hyaluronic Acid (so much easier to write than say) is actually found in us (as well as other living things). It’s in the connective tissue of our bodies, as well as in eye fluid, and it cushions and lubricates joints. I know! Here we were thinking it was just some amazing stuff we’re meant to apply onto our skin to make us look younger. Of course, it’s good for that too.

So what makes Hyaluronic acid such a must-have? Well it has this nifty ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water, which is why it’s so good at keeping our skin nice and plump … until we age anyway. Because, wouldn’t you know it, like so many awesome things about ageing (and yes the sarcasm is real) the older you get the less hyaluronic acid you have, which roughly translates to the older you get the less plump your skin will be, which is why opting to use a serum or moisturiser with hyaluronic acid in it is a great idea if you want to continue enjoying youthful looking skin, either that or you can see a skin specialist for fillers.

Now there’s a revelation. Who knew that some dermal fillers contained hyaluronic acid? Not me, until now. Which actually makes them seem a lot less scary. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be injected into specific areas of your face to plump up fine lines and wrinkles, filllips, and even improve areas of skin where volume has been lost.

So I know what you’re thinking? Does that mean I’m putting human goo into or onto my face? Does that make me kind of a cannibal? Feel free to breathe a sigh of relief, because nope. So far the scientists are leaving our hyaluronic acid alone. The hyaluronic acid you find in beauty products is usually scientifically manufactured so that it’s identical to the hyaluronic acid found in our bodies. I say ‘usually’ because it can come from a few sources, including the red combs of roosters, which is why if you’re an animal lover it may pay to check the origin of the hyaluronic acid in the product you’re buying.

So what products are out there that we can get our hands on to try this miracle molecule? Neutrogena’s Hydroboost range is a hyaluronic hit. Hydraplenish offers a Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which has the added bonus of the Vitamin C. If you really want to give your skin a treat check out Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex, which brims with the good stuff.

So do tell, has one of the cosmetic world’s most hard-to-say words graced your face yet? What did you think of it? Are you considering giving it a go? Would you use it to plump up your lips? So many questions… I want to know your answers!

Never really even heard of it.... not sure I'm keen :s

I would love to try some products with hyaluronic acid, and would like to try the nutrogena hydra boost, especially in winter.

I've used the Neutrogena one - it was quite good! I'm interested in the Hydraplenish one - love my Vitamin C cream, be nice to have a combo.

I already take a supplement that has Hyaluronic Acid in it. I do have it in some of my face masques and chances are it is in some of my skincare. I know it's in Oasis Beauty's Lips and Lashes. I haven't considered getting fillers for my lips but if it was a reputable plastic surgeon and affordable I would consider it.

I had heard this stuff mentioned in tv commercials but never dreamt of using it! Dermal fillers??what???....I think I'll just age gracefully and not go there.

Haven't tried anything with Hyaluronic acid in it (not that I'm aware of anyway?) but it sounds great. The name actually makes it sound like it would burn your skin haha

It is amazing what Hyaluronic Acid can do to our skin. I have never tried any product that contain Hyaluronic Acid before. I will definitely keep an eye out for product with Hyaluronic Acid to try.

I'm using Trilogy age proof line smoothing day cream it has this Hyaluronic acid I do like it but I'm not sure if it has done anything amazing for my skin but it does look better and feel better it's the only way I could do it not really a fan of needles in the face :)

It sounds amazing :)

I have used the neutregena hydroboost gel before. I did like it but I felt like my dry skin still needed more hydration. Interesting that this acid comes from roosters. Can products be considered animal friendly if they have this included?

20th September, 2015

I have never used this on my face as of yet. Very keen to give it a go as the benefits sound fantastic!

I have heard of Hyaluronic Acid before, but have never tried any specific beauty treatment containing this. I have sensitive skin at times, and would have to ensure that it would not irritate my skin. The Hydraplenish looks good, might look into that.

19th September, 2015

I have not had any experience with this but as I am getting older it would be wise of me to look at products with this from what is said in this article.I am always looking for products to keep my skin good as I have a good skin for my age and I would like it to stay this way as long as possible.

19th September, 2015

I'm currently using the Neutrogena eye gel with hyaluronic added. And I have used two different sheet masks with it in. I think the masks make a noticeable difference in my skin. It just seems more glowy and plumpish. They are Nutrimetics and the By Nature masks. But...they also have lots of other great ingredients in them. I am attracted to products will this particular goodie in them.

I've never heard of it before. Yes I would use it and yes I would inject it.. might pop this on my list of stuff to do...

I have the By nature face serum with Hyaluronic Acid in it, not so sure I think that much of it tbh but I haven't used it for a while. Your comment made me find it again. I might try a concerted effort to get results with it shortly.

For some reason I never notice any difference in my skin when I use serums...but the sheet masks are pretty good.
