Armpit Masking... Hot or Not?

Fun armpit fact #1:

It's not your sweat that makes your armpit's smell, it's the bacteria on your armpits that comes in contact with your sweat that creates armpit odour.

While it's natural, and really nothing to worry about, a case of the smelly pits can make one self-conscious, especially if you're working or playing in close proximity to others. Or if, like me, you're sensitive to scents and can't stand getting a whiff of yourself when you're anything less than fresh as a daisy.

Enter: armpit masking.

Proponents of armpit masking (sometimes called armpit detoxing), believe it can help remove the bacteria that causes armpits to smell. Other use it while transitioning from anti-perspirants to natural deodorant as they believe it helps detox the chemicals from the anti-perspirant.

Fun armpit fact #2:

Your body naturally detoxes anti-perspirant ingredients over the course of a few weeks.

So, given that your body will do its thing naturally, and that your armpits are able to take care of themselves without any interference from us*, is armpit masking really the hot new beauty thing we all ought to be trying?

If you look on the internet you'll find loads of people swearing by it, but on the flipside you'll also find no solid scientific research to support the practice, with many skincare specialists explaining that (as mentioned above) your body will regulate itself naturally if you're transitioning from an anti-perspirant to a natural deodorant, and that if anything an armpit mask could upset the natural balance of bacteria in the area, as well as potentially irritate your skin.

With no solid studies saying it's a good idea, science would suggest armpit masking is unnecessary. Yes, transitioning from an anti-perspirant to a natural deodorant can mean a period of time when things might not smell so hot, but then again, applying a mask to an area and upsetting the natural order of things is not ideal either.

While giving it a go once may not do any lasting damage, it's a pass.

So, have you been tempted to try an armpit mask? Have you already given it a go? And if so, what were the results? Or is this simply a no go for you? Get chatting below!

*If you do find your armpits are smelling more than usual, or are irritated, do see a health professional.

I think our bodies are really good at doing their thing and unless something is not right we should not interfere.

Never heard of it. But I wouldn't do it, myself. Life's too short, lol. And I don't use chemicals on my armpits, so they're tox-free anyway, I reckon!

Don't think I've heard of it before. Definitely too lazy to try it either. I'm happy with my pit routine haha

Can't say I have ever heard of this or even know of anyone that has tried it,I don't think it is something I would bother trying.

Don't think I'd bother with this.

That is very interesting. I had no idea this existed. Makes sense though.

You're bringing back vague memories... I think I did this once while transitioning to natural deodorant! The article I'd read suggested it would help your body acclimatise faster. They didn't call it a mask though... That makes it sound real goofy! I think I'd just used kaolin clay and water (which yes, I now realise is a mask!).

I can’t say I’ve heard of armpit masking. Don’t think it’ll be on my list of top 10 things to do :-)
