For the bakers among us baking soda is a pantry staple - but did you know it also has amazing uses within your beauty routine?

If you're a beauty DIY-er then you will never want to be without baking soda again after reading this list!

  1. Dry Shampoo.  Sprinkle a little (very little) baking soda along your part and rub in to refresh your hair between washes.
  2. Deodorant.  Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 4-5 drops of your favourite essential oil or scented oil.  Apply to your underarms with a powder puff.
  3. Toothpaste.  Mix a little baking soda with your toothpaste for a whitening boost.
  4. Mouthwash.  Add a teaspoon to half a glass of water and rinse your mouth out.  Odours will be neutralised.
  5. Teeth Whitener.  Mix baking soda, strawberries and lemon juice into a paste and apply to your teeth for 5 -  10 minutes.  Rinse.
  6. Shampoo.  Baking soda acts as both a clarifying shampoo (to remove build up of product) and a volumising shampoo.  Simple add half a teaspoon to your usual shampoo amount.
  7. Brush cleaner. Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl of hot water and soak your hair brushes to clean them.  Use 1 teaspoon with a cup of water to soak and clean your makeup brushes.
  8. Nail Whitener.  Mix baking soda and water in to a paste and apply to your nails.  Leave for 10 minutes to remove nail polish stains.
  9. Skin Exfoliant.*  Make a paste using 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water and rub in a circular motion on your skin.  Rinse for super soft skin on your face and body.
  10. Pedicure.  Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to warm water and soak your feet.  Gently scrub with a coarse face cloth to remove hard skin.

*There are many baking soda recipes for use on the skin, but there's some evidence to suggest that for some skin types, when mixed with water, baking soda can be too much for your skin.  This is because when mixed with water it's an alkaline and has a much higher pH than your skin.  Best to do a test patch!

I knew about the teeth whitening tip, and I also use baking soda as a cleaner in the kitchen and bathroom along with vinegar.

I have used baking soda to whiten teeth, works well

I have tried it as an exfoliant on my face. It burned me a little. Please do a skin test prior ladies. I have bathed in it with oils before. My mum used to mix it with epsom salts and essential oils.

I've never used baking soda for any of these purposes before...but I think the nail whitener tip is a good one to remember!

Wow, it's a very versatile product! I use it for a lot of cleaning around the the house. I will certainly give the pedicure a try xx

Wow so many great uses! I use it for cleaning as well but didn't realize the uses for beauty treatments. So giving some of these a go.

I didn't know about the nails or tootsies so I might give them a whirl when nobody is home mwahahaha. This isn't a beauty hack but you can use baking soda and a few drops essential oils and you have your very own carpet deodorizer! Stuff paying $5 and up for the glade ones that last like two uses haha

I had no idea you could use it to soak your brushes in well just the bristles

I don't know about soaking my brushes in it... I thought you weren't supposed to soak your makeup brushes because it undoes the glue in the ferrel (the metally bit).

They probably mean just the bristles, like fill a cup only a little of the way and stand your brushes in the mix? I'm sure they don't mean soak the handle as well haha

I thought if you did that the water goes up the bristles? Worth a go though!

They mention makeup brushes too :)

Just try soaking the bristles, swirl them gently in the palm of your hand (it'll help get any leftover product out) and then put them at about a 45 degree angle on a towel to air dry. It should prevent the handle coming unglued from the brush.

I also use baking soda/vinegar mix for house cleaning. Much cheaper and more enviro-friendly too, being on septic tank here.
