Beauty Watch Out’s as You Age...

Article by BR Georgiana

Are you guilty of any of these?

As we grow wiser and more experienced (we dislike the word “older”, so we are not going to use it here), pretty much everything in our appearance changes. But this does not mean we can’t preserve our charm and beauty despite the passage of time. Women can look gorgeous at any age, and we are not saying this just to flatter you, or make you feel better about yourself. Not at all!

Unfortunately we tend to neglect OURSELVES (and our looks) too many times. Because, you know, we work too much, have the kids to take care of, feel too tired at the end of each day, or we are just too good inside our comfort zone to be bothered about camera-ready skin, fabulous hair or a tip-top shape.

If you plan on looking beautiful and flawless at every age, it just doesn’t work like this! It is time to rethink that beauty routine you’ve been following for too long now, and improve it according to what your ID card says.

Just take your time to read the following beauty watch out’s, and think if you are guilty of any of them (you don’t have to tell us the truth).

30s – The Power Age

Not Using Sunscreen on a Regular Basis? Stock Up On It Now!

Being the main cause for premature aging, sun is your number one enemy. Start using sun protection daily, and reapply it several times throughout the day when you spend much time outdoors. Tip: don’t forget about your lovely hands – they are every woman’s true age declaration.

Is Your Skin Getting Thirsty? Keep It Hydrated!

The first signs of aging are looking back at you in the mirror. Are you doing anything about them? As your skin gets drier with time, you are bound to see the first laugh lines and some new ones across your forehead. It’s still early to panic, but you’re just in time to introduce the ANTI-AGING creams in your daily beauty routine. Ignore the name, just enjoy the benefits!

Stuck on That Comfy Pony? It’s Time for a Real Hairstyle!

Chic yet easy-to-manage hair is just what you need in your 30s. The ponytail is not an option anymore, so go for a versatile long cut (no need to chop off and get the boring mommy hairstyle yet) that allows you to wear your hair straight, wavy, curly, or in a chic up-do. In case you already spotted the first grey hairs, colour your mane in a natural shade. Forget about the crazy colours you shamelessly rocked in your 20s, and let your hairstylist recommend what suits your skin tone.

Need a Make-up Call? Cover and Conceal.

Choose a foundation that covers flawlessly, and invest in a concealer that makes those working-late-on-deadlines dark circles fade away. Use rosy shades on cheeks (they illuminate in a flattering way) and strong lip tints with personality. Feel that confidence boost?

40s – The Golden Age

Hydrate, Moisturize, Moisturize, Hydrate.

This is not an editing error, but a repetition meant to remind you that your skin needs serious pampering in this decade. As your estrogen levels are getting lower and lower, your skin tends to get really dry (yes, your neck heard us already!) Besides the ultra-moisturizing serums and creams we hope you are already using, include peptides and retinoids to your skin care. They may have funny names, but they sure know how to rebuild precious collagen. Hyaluronic acid also wants its share of attention. Take note.

Aren’t You Already Sweating Off those Extra Pounds?

Your body forgot how to burn calories like it did some 20 years ago. Now it’s all about portion control, a healthy diet and exercise. Don’t ignore this. Extra pounds may affect your health and can also diminish your self-esteem. Keep fit, healthy and radiant!

Tempted by the Girly-Girl Look? Forget It! We Mean It.

Trying to cheat time by using a teenager make-up palette will end up in embarrassing looks. This age asks for a lighter foundation, the concealer is now de rigueur, and you should switch to matte eye shadows in shades of pink and beige. Replace your black mascara with a brown one and start using a precise lip liner. Classy is the word.

Still not Pampering Your Hair? Start Now!

Have you noticed your strands getting brittle in the past years? In case you have, but you are still not doing anything about it, start treating your tresses to hot-oil treatments every week to improve their texture. Now it’s also a good moment to try those caramel highlights that have been tempting you for some time, or just go one or two shades lighter. You will understand why.

50s and Beyond – The Relaxed Age

Delete the Words Plenty, Shiny and Dark. Talking about Your Make-Up Now.

Applying too much make-up at this age will just highlight your wrinkles, so make sure you are using a hydrating foundation (possibly with anti-aging complex), a matte peachy blush and neutral matte eye shadows. Hydrate your lips before you apply (only) creamy, nude lipsticks.

Haven’t Got a Trusted Hairstylist Yet? Get one!

Your 50s don’t necessarily come with a chop. If your hair still looks healthy, go for a shoulder-length cut or a ladylike bob. To give your strands more body, try a layered cut, and count on your stylist for a light shade that complements your skin.

Don’t forget about retouching your roots - grey hair patches are totally unflattering!

Forgot about Fighting Gravity and Skin As-Dry-As-the-Sahara? Here’s a Reminder.

Despite using the heavy-duty moisturizers, serums and sunscreen on a daily basis (are you???), now you can also think about non-invasive rejuvenating treatments and laser (facelifts are also an option to consider). In case this doesn’t appeal to you, look for products containing phytoestrogen that makes hormonal aging a tad softer, and antioxidants that fight free radicals. Hyaluronic acid and retinol should also be considered.

Now, whatever age group you belong to, the important thing is to remember that every age has its charm, and you get to experiment different stages of beauty during your life. Just accept your age with serenity and learn how to make your features stand out. Easy, right?

OMG once again BR, your advice is spot on! I've just turned 30, and I've already seen the smile lines! Ready to go shopping for some good sunscreen and anti ageing lotions! Not that I mind the lines...shows I've had a happy life! Thanks heaps BR, you're always on!

In my forties and totally agree with all the good advice about looking after your skin and hair. However I also think that as we all age differently, makeup and hairstyles should be based more on the individual. I'm certainly in no hurry to tone it right down and act my age, lol....although I'm sure my time will come. Just not ready to cut my hair short or not enjoy wearing glamorous clothes and makeup!

Bit depressing about the nude lip colour - no more red? I guess probably need a bit of an overhaul in hair and makeup department and tone it down a bit, but think I have the moisturisers etc sorted. Some good advice to BR, thanks.

Now I'm in my early 60s I'm very conscious about getting it right. Lipsticks are hard: too pale and I look pasty, too bright and its a disaster, so I have a couple of good nude colours I can rely on. I have always cleansed and moisturised and it has paid off because my skin is unlined and I'm proud of it.

You do have to work hard at keeping make up subtle and classic, less is more. I have some eyelash extensions, fine ones, not yard brooms, and they make all the difference. A light brush of Nars orgasm blush is perfect and lasts all day. I never go out without a face on, and always have a lipstick with me as I have had for nearly 50 years!

Yes, guilty of not doing power age watch outs... apart from the hair... took care of the sad ponytail last year... now I miss it :/ trying to be good this year though so hopefully will tackle and embrace the other areas

So true, I've hit my 30's and definitely need to start taking care of my skin more. I have no problem taking care of my skin when it comes to makeup, but not where its most important. I need to concentrate more on sun protection and hydration, thanks for this BR :-)

21st January, 2014

only 16 years old ! haha . have to start early :-)

20th January, 2014

As I am not quite in my 30s does this mean I should dye my hair a crazy colour? Otherwise did I miss my chance..... Hmmmm what I took from the above is A. Sunscreen, B. Moisture and C. Hellloooooo funky hair colour and this is the last year I can ;) AND with that I gave away my age..... hahahahaha

20th January, 2014

*sigh* Golden 40's and it sure doesn't feel that way. I know I've started a bit late, but am definately trying to improve the health of my body, my hair and myself in general

20th January, 2014

Thirties haven't hit yet but my early 20's were the new 50's in skincare providing I had the budget and didn't break out. I do want to keep my hair waist to hip length for as long as possible but yes I'm guilty of the regular pony and clamped up bun.

20th January, 2014

Definitely the pony tail, I don't suit short hair at all, but am too lazy to do much with my long hair, so pony tail it is. Pretty good at using sunscreen, moisturiser and concealer though.

19th January, 2014

Very true. I am going though the Golden age of the 40s and can totally relate to this article. Moisturising & portion control are very key.
