Can you beat the physical shopping experience?

If you are one of our subscription box addicts (you know who you are!) then you're probably familiar with Birchbox.  The online service was founded in 2010 and now has subscribers across America, France Spain and the UK.  That's 800000 members all looking forward to receiving a 'surprise' monthly box packed with beauty, grooming and lifestyle samples from a wide variety of brands.  Subscription boxes seemed to be another win for the online beauty industry - something you couldn't get in store.  Until now.

In a seemingly backward move, Birchbox have just opened their first store in NYC, bucking the ever-growing (and somewhat sad) trend of physical stores closing their doors to move online.  Following the business model 'try, learn, buy', Birchbox founders Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna have opened a beauty fanatic's shopping paradise.  With over 250 brands and 2000 products and prices ranges $5 to $200 it's a beauty smorgasbord with something for everyone. There's a B.Y.O.B (Build Your Own Birchbox) section to fill a trial box and even a quick menu service, where, if you know what you want, you can quickly purchase off the menu. And of course, there's an extensive Try Bar.

In an ever-increasing online world, physical stores, particularly smaller businesses, seemed to be declining - it's more frugal for companies to operate online, trimming expenses and widening their market to the limits of the postal service.  Birchbox's unusual move can be taken as a sign that,for the beauty industry at least, there's not only still a place for a bricks and mortar store - it can actually be a better consumer experience than shopping online. 

Personally I love nothing more than wandering round the beauty department at Smith & Caugheys, but with the serious online shopping behaviour on the Beauty Review forum I thought I must be a rare breed.  So I asked around at BR HQ - "What's your favourite place to buy cosmetics?"  For HRH Merilyn, the answer is Sephora along the Champs Elysee's in Paris.  For Natalie, it's the Beauty Hall at Selfridge's.  "It's like being in a casino - you lose all concept of time.  I love nothing more than wandering round with my headphones on - the hum of the London crowd disappears and it's just me in the ultimate beauty paradise." BR Zoe spends her Saturday mornings hopping to and from every beauty department in the mall, chatting to brand ambassadors to find out what's new.

So we put our heads together and came up with why we have a better beauty shopping experience in store as opposed to online;

  1. You can find your perfect shade.  There's no hedging your bets based on swatch charts.  How many products have you never used because you took a punt online and the colour wasn't right?
  2. The smell test.  Whether it's fragrance or a body lotion, if you don't like the scent you won't use it and they haven't invented scratch and sniff websites yet!
  3. Knowledge is power.  Walk in to any given beauty department or store and you'll find someone to answer your questions, help you narrow your search and give you advice specifically aimed at you, if you need it.
  4. There's no wait.  It's all very well and good saving yourself $2 by buying that well-reviewed zit zapper online, but by the time it arrives, Mount Vesuvius on your forehead has probably calmed down.
  5. Cardio.  Walking round the shops is great exercise.  Browsing on your laptop in bed?  Not so much.
  6. Customer Service.  We're not saying you're always going to find a smiley face, but at least you won't get an annoying automated message, promising you help within 48 hours!
  7. You can be sure of the quality.  If you order something online and the quality isn't what you thought, can you really be bothered going through the return process?
  8. You can come out looking better than you went in!  Online photo apps just can't compete with an actual makeover!

I do love buying I store because you can test your exact shade and try and smell the product. But I also love online shopping especially if I want to buy a bulk order of things as it works out cheaper and I can browse on the site when I want to and save items in my cart. I'd be in the store for a lifetime otherwise! I constantly change my mind about things and often like to think about products I want to buy first.

I have never shopped online. I know it may sound old fashioned, but I just don't feel comfortable paying for a product without seeing it or being physically given it at the time of purchase. I just don't like the lack of control that comes with waiting for the mail. I also like the right now factor of shops, if I'm buying something it's generally because I want to use it ASAP. Totally agree with this article 200% and my favorite places to shop are kmart for good prices, but lush and debenhams in London are where I've had amazing customer service.

Interesting that the favourite places to shop are overseas! I do enjoy browsing the pots and bottles, swatching and sampling as I go, but the prices in NZ are so fantastically high that it just makes sense to buy overseas. Even when you have sampled in store it is still 50/50 whether the shade the sales lady loved on you in the shop looks any good walking down the street. And you can't take it back. Shopping at the MAC store in Santa Monica in June, the shop assistant heard my accent and asked me why Kiwis always buy ten lipsticks at a time from her shop. I told her they cost $45 to $50 at home. She couldn't believe it. They cost US$16 - $17 or about NZ$20.

I LOVE a good online shop in terms of getting my hands on hard to access goodies like eye shadow palettes, or getting things like elf products by the bundle at next to nothing and knowing that if I don't like a product, it was only a few dollars. For some things, I think it can be hard to beat the physical shopping experience, for example perfume or when trying out a new foundation, or bathtime treats like from Lush. I do like the experience of wandering around looking at products and trying out testers, but often with New Zealand prices it's soooo much cheaper to then buy it online.

I definitely buy at the store. I don't like buying online. Even though reviews are good, you never know if you're going to get a dud. I always like to buy it then check if it's alright. If not, I can immediately take it back in store! I would not be bothered with online shopping if that happens, not to mention, you don't unconsciously spend too much in store compared to online - for me anyway! Otherwise id just add a whole lot of products to my shopping cart, can't resist.

I thought I'd gone to heaven when I visited all the Sephora stores in Vancouver (I went to 2 of them). There's just something about being surrounded by so many cosmetics, being able to touch them and smell them... *sigh*

I like to look and shop, and now with beauty review I can get a good idea of a product and if I should buy it, at the moment waiting for a product to be reviewed and if it gets a good review I'm in, so waiting. But yes I do like to shop :)

If I can get them cheaper on,line then I'll do an online shop. But if I want to smell or feel something then I will go in store.

Im definitely for shopping in store. You get to touch, feel and get a real sense of what the product is like. I like to browse through the store and look for the right make up. I also like talking to the make up assistants for help with colours.

I definitely like to test the product in store and if possible collect samples to take home and try, particularly if the product is expensive. This is especially true with foundation. And as far as perfume goes I need to test it on myself before I'll cough up the cash. If I like the product where I'll buy it depends on where the best bargain is. If it's discounted online I'll spend my money if the store has a special or it the same price as online and I can get store credit the store will get my business. Not having to pay for postage is another bonus of shopping in store and I do like that I will have the product that day. I do my research on expensive products and it does turn out sometimes I know more about a product than the retail assistant particularly if it a natural skincare product. Last week I had a Farmers retail assistant ask me for recommendations and questions on a Trilogy product. Overall, I've had good experiences shopping in store and like getting matched up with foundation and getting my eye make up done and taking home samples so as long as prices are lower than online or there's a good bargain the for real store will get my business.

I tend to find what I like in store and then buy online. I know that's a little disloyal to our economy etc, but prices seem a little ridiculous in NZ. I'm also really shy and have been put off by a few bad store encounters.

I far prefer shopping instore for most of the reasons you guys listed above, mainly because you can see the exact colour, smell and see the product and get it instantly. Although I do love the anticipation of an online package and finally receiving the parcel, makes it like christmas! It is my dreeeeam to be able to go and shop at Sephora however the prices in NZ make it not a pleasureable experience, so for me I end up doing my shopping online. I rely mainly on online swatches and reviews, which is why I'm so glad I found this site!! :)

I love great customer service and having an amazing interaction with the shop attendant. One day in Lush I had the most awesome and heartwarming conversations with one of the girls working there! Those sorts of interactions make my day!! I am a people person.

However I do like the convenience of online shopping and being able to look around for the cheapest price. Especially as some beauty stores can seem very clinical to me.

Oh and since joining BR I've definitely done more online shopping because online is accessible anytime and there's at least once or twice week that some posts in the forum about a special or discount that's being run in an online store.
