Celebrity Created Beauty – Can It Be Trusted?

I have a love/hate relationship with Gwyneth P. On one hand I am in awe of her. She’s so sparkly and clean looking. I bet she could bathe in a mud puddle and come out shining. Her Instagram is filled with pictures of her hanging with friends, looking like they’re having fun and I think about how awesome it would be to join her crew. On the flipside she’s the creator of GOOP. The name alone gives me a case of the shudders. It all seems so… aspirational. Or pretentious. She’s a mother, an actress, she can belt out a tune, she has a lifestyle website and now I read that she’s teaming up with Juice Beauty to create a range of natural skincare. According to this Woman’s Wear Daily article it’s because she’s yet to find ‘a [beauty] product that is as luxurious and high-performing as it is clean”.

I. Can’t. Even... It’s all too much. The snobbery gets to me. You can’t seriously tell me there’s not a natural organic skincare range out there that’s not good enough for Gwyn? Because I can think of at least three off the top of my head – all Kiwi ones at that.  The thing is, it’ll probably be amazing, and amazingly expensive, but they could offer it to me for half price and I’d still stick with my natural organic Kiwi favs, because apart from being a big supporter of Kiwi companies, the people behind the brands are 100% focussed on creating beautiful products. It’s their jam. Whereas the celebs of the world who collaborate with others to create a product, whether it be perfume or a range of water or skincare seem to do so in order to expand and improve their brand.

Of course it’s not only celebs that collaborate with companies to create something beauty-related. It happens with beauty vloggers (some who also happen to be makeup artists) too. ColourPop, Gerard Cosmetics and Becca have had collabs with the likes of Kathleen Lights, Manny MUA and Jaclyn Hill. Would I buy their products? Yes. Absolutely. Because beauty is their life. It’s their ‘thing’. I’d like to think that celebrities with sidebars going on, especially those who are serious about their ‘brand’, wouldn’t let something less than fabulous hit the market, but part of me suspects that a beauty vlogger is even more invested in their product so it’s going to be better, because one serious misstep and their reputations are gone. Boom. Kablooey. Whereas if Gwynnie’s skincare line fails to take off? It’s no biggie, a dent to her ego maybe, but then all she has to do is win as Oscar or star in a fan-friendly franchise film and she’s back on top again.

The funny thing is I have no problems with the likes of Lorde or Miley collaborating with MAC or Gwen Stefani working with OPI, because it feels like while they no doubt are getting the opportunity to say ‘yes I like that colour’ or ‘no way would I wear that’, you’re getting a tried and true product. It’s still a MAC lippy, it’s still an OPI nail polish. It’s a mutually beneficial coming together of a beloved company and a popular star. But creating something from scratch because there’s nothing else out there good enough for you? No. Thank. You.

I read my ponderings back and wonder if I’m just having a grumpy old Aunty Flow is on her way day. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with a celebrity who wants to be everything to everyone, who wants to dip their toe into all the pools in the world while at the same time coming across as a complete doorknob because nothing out there is good enough for their precious porcelain skin… To be fair this week alone I’ve had to stop following a whole bunch of lifestyle bloggers because I just don’t trust that their opinion isn’t bought anymore, so perhaps this Tab-rant is an extension of that feeling?

I don’t know. Help sort my thoughts out my Beauties. Are you a fan of collabs or celebrity creations? Do you only like collabs with people who are serious about the product? Does a celebrity sway you to buy something no matter what? Or do you prefer to only indulge in beauty products from companies that are passionate about what they do and why they do it?

Tell me I’m wrong, tell me I’m right, tell me I might sort-of-maybe-kind-of have a point. Just … tell me… xxx

I buy something because I like it. Period. Doesn't matter what celebrity endorsed it or created it. I think the only celebrity thing I have at all is Mac Velvety Teddy Lipstick. I bought that because I've been experimenting with nude lipsticks this year and other people said it's a beautiful color not because I keep up with the Kardashians. It was on sale to top it off so I went with it.

I agree with you completely! Collabs are great BUT when celebs say things like they cant find a "product" right for them I just cough BS and look away especially when its along the lines of skin care haha!

Anything Gwenyth Paltrow is associated with is a turn off. The woman is so self absorbed. I do like some celebrity ranges/collaborations, but others come across as purely a marketing stunt with no substance behind them.

Sure, why not? all of them want to market their own fragrance, so why not design some skin care? I agree though, there's already a surfeit of great skin products, but if Gwyenth wants to try and improve on them, then good luck to her - she might come up with something superior - who knows?

I agree with you, I also think that Celebrities have different requirements. Basically, Gwyneth is an actress mostly & will therefore be under harsh lighting, wearing a lot more makeup than us normals, and therefore her skin requirements are going to be very different. When it comes to scents, I just cant bring myself to even smell celebrity perfume. Just seems like a big old money spinner.

I can't really take Gwyneth seriously. She lives in her own dream bubble. I imagine her line will be hideously expensive and not really all that. I would buy some celeb products, just like i would buy some youtuber endorsed products but I don't think they are the best thing Ever.

I understand where you're coming from :-) I'm more inclined to be swayed by beauty gurus as opposed to celebs who you think would know how to design a beautiful perfume bottle since I'm sure nothing less than elegant graces their vanity. But um for some reason they tend to look less than desirable.

Celebrity endorsements I am ok with if it s something they actually believe in... the hardest part is determining how credible they are :/ If JLo started promoting a product and says this is all she uses for her gorgeous glow then I would be all over it like butter on bread.

30th September, 2015

You would like to think that if a celeb endorsed a product it could be better than others? On the other hand, we are all different and different things work for different people.

I don't like gwyneth shes always coming up with some new wacky diet or health or beauty treatment and calling her child after a piece of fruit, hello! now for a classy celebrity endorse person go no further than jane fonda for L'Oréal.

I agree with every one of your points and who I would trust to buy stuff from. I recently got some Real Techniques brushes and I love them!

I'm really not a Gwyneth fan- didn't she brag she has Vagacials? I don't usually even like movies she has been in- just something about her voice makes me cringe. Jessica Alba on the other hand -even with the sunscreen mess- I'd probably try a product of hers but it's not readily available here. New Zealand had some really great natural brands, I guess Gwyneth just isn't worthy of using them, no great loss there I think.

30th September, 2015

Collabs are fine -all they are doing is endorsing a product and hopefully they are genuine but I fail to see how an actress etc has the ability to create better products than a company who spend a fortune developing a good range especially the numerous companies that are getting into organic products- their whole business is dependent on the end result where as the "Star" can just move on to another area of their life.

29th September, 2015

I do think for the most part celebrity ranges are just an image pusher. But there are some like Gwen Stefani or Hilary Duff whose label have become what they've then moved onto as their main product. So I think it depends on the celeb. But clean skincare? I'm pretty sure skincare is about cleaning the skin. Thumbs down for this one Gwyneth.

Oh I'm a super sucker for celebrity collaborations I don't know what it is that reels me in. But it's not all of them, just depends on who it is and if I like them. I have so many celebrity perfumes and nail polishes it's not funny lol

Perfumes and nail polishes are usually made by an existing company but in the end if you enjoy the product you are not a sucker

That's one thing I do love, celeb perfumes. I buy them because I love the scent though. I have perfumes from celebs I don't particularly like but love the fragrance

I remember reading something about how she says her kids are always saying they feel hungry because she makes them eat low carb. Fair enough is she wants to eat like tat, but I couldn't imagine making my kids eat like that and keeping them Hungry!

I love big old money spinners - maybe we could start working on a fragrance/skincare line Karen!!! now, where to start....
