Changing your foundation with the season

Are you currently using a foundation you love?  The perfect shade for you, combined with the perfect formula for your skin type and the perfect finish for your look?  Then brace yourself, we have bad news,

Summer is here which means it's time to readdress your foundation needs!  You might be thinking, "Can't I just buy my usual foundation in darker shade?", but it's not just your skin tone that changes with the season, some people suffer from dry skin in the winter, but are prone to oily skin in the summer - which means you'll need to opt for a different formula.

Here's some tips for changing your foundation with the season:

  • Make sure you're wearing the right shade! Even if you use SPF everyday you're likely to go up a shade or two during the summer.  If you self tan then your winter foundation is going to leave you looking too pale compared to the rest of your summer glow.
  • Reassess your skin's needs.  Is your skin more oil-prone in the summer?  Look for formulas that are 'shine free' or 'oil free'.  Maybelline's SuperStay Better Skin Foundation  is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't block your pores!
  • Improvise during the in-between phase.  If you don't want to shell out for a new foundation knowing you're going to get even darker, bronzer can be a useful ally.  You can either mix your foundation with your bronzer, or apply a light dusting on top. Tinted moisturisers and BB Creams are also great for the awkward in-between phase.
  • Look after your skin.  Tanned skin needs regular moisturising and hydration.  Look for a foundation that isn't going to block your pores or dry your skin out.  Maybelline Better Skin has a hydrating formula containing Actyl C and SPF that evens out discoloration and brightens dull areas, providing a healthy looking glow from day to night.
  • Utilise your bronzed tone.  We know many of you love a full coverage, matte foundation - but summer is the time to embrace your luminosity.  Opt for a sheer formula that allows the depth of your tan to shine through.
  • Find a formula that can last through the summer heat.  Heat, humidity and perspiration are your foundation's enemies.  The last thing you want is your foundation melting down your face, so find a product like Better Skin with a lightweight but all-day formula, so you won't need to touch up during the day!
  • Primers are your friend!  Primers help your foundation stay in place and this is true even during the summer months, so whatever foundation you use, be sure to prime first!
  • Use a translucent powder.  If you use a pigmented powder to set your foundation you not only risk cake face, it can make your tan look less golden and more muddy.  You'll also want to avoid reapplying powder during the day - it won't settle on hot or sweaty skin.

So, over to you!  Do you change your foundation with the seasons and if so how do you do it?  Do you stick to the same product and just change shade, or do you look for something completely new?  If you don't change your foundation, how do you make your winter shade work for the summer?

I do tend to change my make up with the seasons. I find it frustrating at times because I will find my perfect shade and boom hello summer :/

These are really helpful tips. My skin gets more oily in the summer and becomes more greasy so I think I need a more lightweight foundation that won't slip off my face as much

Great tips Br, I use two different tones for winter and summer, my skin changes quite a bit in colour and bronzer just doesn't cut it

I find that I don't use a lot of makeup in the summer, it ends up looking messy if I sweat during the day so I just don't bother! I think I will use bb creams a lot and probably bronzer. I would love to find a great summer foundation though, my skin isn't looking so great at the moment so I really need something to cover that up!

I don't tend to change the foundation I use very often as I've found my holy grail foundation! Although I do get a shade darker and use more of my bronzer in the summer months. I always use primer these days, as it makes such a difference to my foundation staying on. It will especially be needed in summer, when the warmth comes our way!

I definitely go darker during summer and my skin gets oily as well whereas in winter it's pale and dry. I don't feel the need to wear that much foundation in summer though, because my skin looks more awake and fresh so I feel more comfortable in my skin during summer

I don't tend to change my foundation between summer and winter, I'm quite pale so don't tend to tan to much so stay the sameish shade all year round, iv never really thought about my skin being different from winter to summer, something to consider :)

I'm so light all year round that its really hard to find a foundation in winter. I tend to just use pressed powder in the lightest shade over concealer or bb cream but would live to find a winter shade that suits

I normally stick to a natural tone that I can use all year long and maybe if going out a bit of browser on top

Actually changing my formula has been something I have never looked at.

I've changed colours, or added extra bronzer....but I have never thought about formula...

I use the same foundation year round! I don't tan easily & I barely ever wear makeup in the summer time unless I'm attending an event or special occasion. If I do end up with a tan I just bronze all over! =)

Normally I end up just changing the shade of my foundation with the season as my at-work environment doesn't effect my makeup so much. I did used to have to change from powder to liquid foundations over summer as I found that in the sun any sweat (stupid eww upper lip sweat) would really mess up my makeup. These days I tend to prefer a more heavy duty foundation year round anyway so I'll normally change the shade then blend a little of the colours during that awkward in-between time :)

After reading this, I am now re thinking my whole foundation. I just use the same colour all year round but not as much in the summer. Always put a translucent powder over the top. Am going to check out some BB creams and primers now, thanks for a great article

I honestly avoid spending long hours outside and am slathered with sunscreen when I do maybe once a week. So I'm pretty much the same shade year round. But this year I want to look into a nice BB cream for summer, and when I mean nice I mean one that honestly suits my skin tone and is like a more sheer version of my foundation. It's bit of a challenge because it's difficult to find a foundation that matches my skin tone and foundations have more shades than BB cream. And getting a primer would be a good idea to do this year.

Ive been using me BB cream alot. I do need to invest is a beauty cake foundation. The liquid type that I have keep fading.
