Classic Style - Hairstyles that are always in fashion

Article by BR Natalie

A break up.  A new job.  Boredom.  Whatever the reason, there will inevitably come a time when you want to change up your hair do.  Which leaves you with a bit of a dilemma - Do you opt for a cutting edge, to-the-minute style that will be out of fashion before your hair is swept off the floor?  Or do you find yourself a style that is always en vogue?

Now we're not saying don't be adventurous.  I like to think I've rocked many an out-there style fabulously, like the asymmetric pink and black cut a la Kelly Osbourne.  (Note to The Mummy - the above the ear basin do, with a clipped step at the nape of the neck you subjected a 9 year old BR Natalie to, was cruel, not stylish.)  But when you don't have time nor the cash for regular trims, colour touch ups or awkward growing out phases, then you'll want to opt for a look that is easy to maintain yet always on trend.

Here's our pick of hairstyles that are always in fashion!

The Graduated Bob

Think of Victoria Beckham's Pob, the posh bob, featured in the header image for this article. Whatever the colour of your hair the precise shape of a graduated bob always looks fashionable and it does so at any age.  For a softer look go for a side part with a side-swept fringe, and give the straighteners a miss.

The Long Bob

Curl it under, flick it out, play it straight.  However you wear it, the long bob is perfect if you want to change your long hair without going too crazy and they grow out gracefully for the low maintenance gal.  Play around with blunt edges, choppy layers and fringes to keep your long bob current whilst enjoying the security of a classic look.

The Pixie.

Ok if you're a long haired gal, the pixie cut probably scares the life out of you, but it really is a look that doesn't ever go out of fashion.  There are endless styles and textures to play around with and by choosing long layers on top, you'll ease the awkwardness of the in-between-salon-visits growth.

The Blunt Fringe.

A fringe is a great way to freshen up any do, and whilst side swept, feathered or uber-short fringes come and go, the brow-skimming blunt bangs are always in fashion.  Most salons offer free fringe trims and hey, when you want to grow it out, grab the bobby pins and play with quiffs, pomps and plaits!

 Soft Layers.

Soft layers are fantastic for girls who want to be able to dry and go.  They add texture and movement and remain low maintenance throughout the day. Curl the ends out slightly if you straighten your hair to add bounce to your do.

Long Layers.

If you love your long hair and can't bear to lose any length, ask your stylist to add choppy layers that taper a few inches from the bottom of the hair.  This will add movement and if your hair is wavy it will weigh the ends down - making waves and curls less unruly.

And if you're too scared of the scissors, try these always classic, no cut dos:

 Defined Curls.

Naturally curly hair is extremely versatile and can pull off a number of styles, but if you're feeling less than daring opt for defining your curls to pack a powerhouse look.  After you shower, towel dry and then define random curls by winding around your index finger. Air dry completely, then smooth any frizz with styling cream.

Partings.

A centre parting teamed with poker straight locks (think Gwenyth Paltrow) is always in style.  The low side parting has been the go to look for Femme Fatales since Veronica Lake in the 1940s.  It's actually quite amazing how a simple step like changing your parting re-vamps your whole do!

Bed Head.

However sharp and polished the current trends are, the 'just out of bed' look is the alternative that is never out of fashion.  No matter if your hair is long or short, curly or straight, thick or fine; going for the bed head look is always easy.  Try a texturising wax or sea salt spray to create your own laid-back beach look.

So there you have it - our list of timeless hairstyles.  These hairstyles might be always in style but it doesn't mean they're boring.  You can funk them up with different colours, textures and styling methods, to stay on trend and yet safely in your comfort zone!

Great! I currently have a graduated bob which is straight and quite long at the front, its easy to look after and sits well especially since I have fine hair.

I'm not classic really but not cutting edge either, sort of in the middle - I change the parting on my hair depending on my mood.

I would love to try the blunt fringe but my hair is too fine and just wouldn't sit right. The pixie look is awesome too but bit too chicken to try that one, I used to have short hair like that when I was younger though..................

I have always had short hair because I was too impatient to let it grow, but I have persevered and now it is a shoulder length bob which I love

26th July, 2014

I donated my hip length hair and shaved the rest for fundraising in December so I'm on the lookout for another style as my hair has grown now.

I've had every style from long flowing locks that reached past my bum to shaved completely off (thought my mother was gonna shoot me), the only style I haven't tried isa perm, & a new color

I'm too scared to do anything drastic so I tend to just always have the long layers with my hair

I'm a bit boring really, looking at all these styles I probably had more when I was younger but now I'm just long layers and growing out for my wedding, I had the fringe last year so that's taking a bit to grow out. I probably experiment more with colour then cut.

Ive tried all these hair styles. Ive got a long bob at the moment. No bangs though. I do miss long layers though as it was a fav.

Just got a 'graduated bob' and I love it. Its kind of a combination with 'just got out of bed' look and its so effortless yet stylish!

Awesome article . I tend to stick to the same hair style long with minimal layers. I always get the itch to cut into my hair but I've been growing it for so long I get scared lol

I just recently went for a chop and colour..... (Wednesday) and I am pleased to say I am one of these although I am not sure I have ever really ventured away from these when getting a cut. I love the bobs! Although prefer longer hair at the moment. Interesting read as usual girls! x

I've always been a long hair girl and can't see that changing. I did have a bad hair model experience years ago where I ended up with a short grunge style. It was a disaster and took years for me to grow it back to a length that I could live with happily!! I find it so much easier to maintain long hair and love the elegance of a perfect bun on an older woman - think Monica Belluci and all those gorgeous Dolce and Gabana photo shoots! Stunning and feminine.... I do love some of the other styles above and I think if it suits you, go for it :-)

This tempts me to have a change! I've been growing my hair for so long and it is so boring! The problem being when you have a professional job it is expected you have a professional haircut. And I hate the constant comments when you change your hair! Don't like the attention :)

I've mainly stuck with long layers though I had a bob once, was one of the first at my school to get the Rachel LOL But at the moment I like the length, so I think I'll stick with long layers :)
