When the topic of cult classics came up in the office and the decision to do two lists, ‘old school cult classics’ vs. ‘the new class of cult classics’ I was firmly in the ‘new class’ line. Yeah, I appreciate the Elizabeth Arden’s of the world, but there are newer products out there that aren’t just destined to be greats, they already are and they deserve to have their freak flags fly.
What’s one of my favourite pet pieces of makeup? Stila Kitten! And I know I’m not alone. This stunning champagne with a hint of pink shade of eyeshadow is a must if you’re a fan of getting your shimmer on. Not only is it beautiful on the eyelids and inner corners, it is seriously one amazing highlighter for the cheekbones. Usually I’m too fickle to hit pan on anything, but from the dent I’m seeing it’s going to happen.
If you’re a lover of luminous rather than shimmer (or both!) you’ve no doubt got Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Palette on your radar. With a rating of 4.8 out of 5 on Beauty Review from 23 reviews, it’s clearly got its share of fans and we can see why. Its three colours work to blur and brighten your skin, leaving you looking like you’ve been airbrushed. As member Farmers-Wife said in her review ‘bury me with it’.
2010 was a marvellous year, for it was the year that Benefit’s Hoola hit the market. In less than five years this square shaped box of goodness has become a must for anyone who is a fan of contouring or of giving their skin that sun-kissed look.
To be honest, if I were to choose an Urban Decay Naked palette to put here, it’d be Naked 2. I love the heck out of that thing. But in all fairness, the first Naked needs to be here – after all it was the palette that started the whole UD Naked shebang off aaaand it rates .1 of a point ahead of UD2 on BR, coming in at 4.9. Perfect for those who like a neutral look but want to have the option of creating day or night eye styles, Urban Decay Naked is a must.
A pinky peachy blush is a pinky peachy blush, right? They’re all the same, ay? Nope. There’s only one blush that can make you look like you’ve been up to no good… or a lot of good, depending on how you look at it. Nars Orgasm. Beautifully pigmented with wicked staying power, I’d give up bowchickywowing to have a constant supply of this given to me.
Now, I’m not gonna fib, there are plenty more I’d love to have popped into this list, Too Faced Chocolate Bar, YSL Touche Eclat, Trilogy’s Everything Balm… really, the list could have gone and on, but as it was rightly pointed out to me a Top 5 list has to have five products and that’s it. Siiiighhhh… why must logic win out? So spill, what are your top new-school cult must-haves? What do I need to add to my collection and why? Get chatting!
I haven't tried any of these but have heard great things about UD naked palletes and NARS (mostly from lovely BR members). I think I need to step up my makeup game :D No reason we can't have a top ten?! ;)
