Cult Classics: Out With The Old

By BR Tabatha

When the topic of cult classics came up in the office and the decision to do two lists, ‘old school cult classics’ vs. ‘the new class of cult classics’ I was firmly in the ‘new class’ line. Yeah, I appreciate the Elizabeth Arden’s of the world, but there are newer products out there that aren’t just destined to be greats, they already are and they deserve to have their freak flags fly.

What’s one of my favourite pet pieces of makeup? Stila Kitten! And I know I’m not alone. This stunning champagne with a hint of pink shade of eyeshadow is a must if you’re a fan of getting your shimmer on. Not only is it beautiful on the eyelids and inner corners, it is seriously one amazing highlighter for the cheekbones. Usually I’m too fickle to hit pan on anything, but from the dent I’m seeing it’s going to happen.

If you’re a lover of luminous rather than shimmer (or both!) you’ve no doubt got Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Palette on your radar. With a rating of 4.8 out of 5 on Beauty Review from 23 reviews, it’s clearly got its share of fans and we can see why. Its three colours work to blur and brighten your skin, leaving you looking like you’ve been airbrushed. As member Farmers-Wife said in her review ‘bury me with it’.

2010 was a marvellous year, for it was the year that Benefit’s Hoola hit the market. In less than five years this square shaped box of goodness has become a must for anyone who is a fan of contouring or of giving their skin that sun-kissed look.

To be honest, if I were to choose an Urban Decay Naked palette to put here, it’d be Naked 2. I love the heck out of that thing. But in all fairness, the first Naked needs to be here – after all it was the palette that started the whole UD Naked shebang off aaaand it rates .1 of a point ahead of UD2 on BR, coming in at 4.9. Perfect for those who like a neutral look but want to have the option of creating day or night eye styles, Urban Decay Naked is a must.

A pinky peachy blush is a pinky peachy blush, right? They’re all the same, ay? Nope. There’s only one blush that can make you look like you’ve been up to no good… or a lot of good, depending on how you look at it. Nars Orgasm. Beautifully pigmented with wicked staying power, I’d give up bowchickywowing to have a constant supply of this given to me.

Now, I’m not gonna fib, there are plenty more I’d love to have popped into this list, Too Faced Chocolate Bar, YSL Touche Eclat, Trilogy’s Everything Balm… really, the list could have gone and on, but as it was rightly pointed out to me a Top 5 list has to have five products and that’s it. Siiiighhhh… why must logic win out? So spill, what are your top new-school cult must-haves? What do I need to add to my collection and why? Get chatting!

I haven't tried any of these but have heard great things about UD naked palletes and NARS (mostly from lovely BR members). I think I need to step up my makeup game :D No reason we can't have a top ten?! ;)

I would just love to try the Urban Decay Palette, looks so nice.

I've heard so much about these products but I haven't actually used them!

Those are all pretties I would happily add to my collection if I could afford it! But the Hourglass palette has been on the list for awhile. I did seriously think about getting the Urban Decay palette but then I discovered that Kat Von D Shade and Light Eye Contour Palette is amazing because it's all matte shades that are neutral and you can go for nude to night eye makeup looks. It's amazing for anyone with hooded or monolids like me. I love the look of shimmer but the prettiness in the pan doesn't translate well on my lids unfortunately. Eye of Horus Goddess Pencils are gorgeous and have amazing stayability.

I need to try Hola but it's dang exspensive and the cassia nude by naked urban decay wow to think one year ago I never heard of any of these I agree about Stilas eyeshadow in Kitten & I have acquired this I'm not too sure about hourglass I have the dupe by Makeup Revolution & it's bomb.com

Totally agree on Hoola and the Hourglass powders. I got rid of Orgasm, we never really connected. Mary Lou and the Anastasia Brow Wiz would be ones to add!

19th January, 2016

Ahhhh I want them all!!!

19th January, 2016

I am currently replacing all my classics. mine would be shimmer brick from Bobbi Brown eye pallete brown luxe from MAC

choosing to go cruelty free now

Macs I agree with you! I love love love the liquid matte lipsticks. I haven't personally tried any of the products listed before, I'm looking into investing in an urban decay naked pallete though :)

19th January, 2016

I agree with all these! Stila Kitten is the kind of shade I always gravitate towards. Love!

My Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Nectar is on the top of my list. Adds a beautiful finish at the top of the cheeks to make you look happy and healthy.

I own or used to own 4 out of 5 of these. I really wasn't a fan of the nars blush but the rest are amazing. I so want to try the hourglass one day. I'd definitely say the choc bar should be up there plus Mary lou as well.

Stila kitten catches my eye and I would really like to try that. -They all look interesting though.

18th January, 2016

Hmm not really sure. Probably something like snow fairy from lush.

18th January, 2016

I want Stila Kitten so bad! I have heard it is quite prone to shattering though. I have the ambient lighting palette and it really isn't getting the use that I thought it would. Need to get into it more. I ended up getting rid of my Hoola as it is a tad to dark for me so I wasn't getting the use out of it I should have, I'm sure it is much happier in its new home. And the Naked palette and Nars Orgasm.... must haves. Will never leave my grasp!

Tab's not the only Stila fan on the team - I have it and it's FAB. I've travelled with it to Noumea and Oz and it's never smashed, which is great because I may have cried... and then remembered I have a backup. (Three if you count the palettes...)
