What makes a beauty product a classic? When does it achieve cult status? Debate was rife in BRHQ when an article idea on cult classics was pitched. Some of us feel that a product has to have stood the test of time to be considered a cult classic. Others felt it had to be on must-have lists of the bloggers and vloggers, celebs and makeup artists, it had to be a product people swooned over – and just because it was new or newish didn’t mean it wasn’t worthy. So what did we do? Two lists! The first? Our top five cult classics – products that have wowed the world for at least 30 years!
A product that tightens, smoothes and softens skin, whilst minimising fine lines and wrinkles and giving your skin a glowy boost? Clarins Beauty Flash Balm blasted onto the scene over three decades ago and women all over have made a home for it in their beauty routines – because let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want what it promises? And is it worth the hype? With a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Beauty Review, it seems the answer is an overwhelming ‘yes!’.
Maybe she’s born with it… maybe she had the sense to try Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. Over 40 years ago this pink-tubed green-topped product hit the shelves and became a sensation. Found in makeup artists and teenage girls makeup kits alike, Maybelline Great Lash is adored for its accessibility, fabulous price point and its ability to emphasise lashes with ease. An all round winner.
Coined a ‘miracle cream’ Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is one of those products that is well worth having squirreled away in your handbag. This multi-purpose cream is beloved for its ability to be used on grazes, on lips, as a cuticle moisturiser, even as a brow groomer and a highlighter for your cheekbones. I bet if it could wash your dishes and do your laundry it’d do that for you too… bless its cotton socks.
The 50s saw the birth of Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice. This gorgeous red shade added a touch of glamour to women’s lips, and it still does today! What’s amazing about this red is that it claims to work on both cool and warm toned skin - no wonder it’s well over half a century old and still going strong!
If it’s good enough for Queen Liz, it’s got to be good enough for the rest of us. Yep, Essie Ballet Slippers is apparently the only polish Queen Elizabeth II will wear – and we totally understand why. For just over 30 years this divine shade of pink has graced our fingers, transporting them from dull and work-worn to chic and sophisticated. We don’t see this classic polish stepping out of the limelight anytime soon.
So do tell my dearies, what are your cult classics from days gone by? Do any of our top five feature in your day-to-day life or are there others we need to know about? Share away…

I often wondered what made thing a cult classic; classic to me has always meant stood the test of time (car classics are exactly that) but I can see the reasoning behind Must haves having a cult status too. I haven't tried any of these but I am thinking I should!?
