Designer vs Celebrity Fragrances

27 July, 2014 - 09:13pm by - First Lady | 29 Comments

Article by BR Natalie

There's a distinct divide in the fragrance world, and we're not talking about scents.  In the left corner we have your 'traditional' or 'designer' fragrances, usually from established fragrance houses.  In the right corner, you'll find your celebrity fragrances.  More often than not the celebrity behind the brand claims to have had a 'nose' in the creating of their fragrance, but many fragrance and celebrity pairings seem to be a marriage of marketing convienience.

I admit I used to be a bit of a perfume snob.  My perfume collection consisted of Christian Dior - Dolce Vita and J'adore, Chanel No. 5 and Jean Paul Gaultier.  And then I joined the Beauty Crew.  I started reading glowing reviews for perfumes I'd dismissed as 'tacky' or 'cheap', without even smelling them.  Well my dresser now consists a happy medley of designer and celebrity fragrances.  Jean Paul Gaultier sits next to Taylor Swift.  Mariah Carey is cosying up to Christian Dior.

But as always, it's not our opinion that counts - we want to know how our members view celebrity fragrances vs designer fragrances.  And to help you decide we've compiled the Top 5 Designer and Top 5 Celebrity Fragrances*, as rated by you, our members. So why not check out the list and tell us your thoughts on the ultimate fragrance battle - designers vs celebrities, does it ultimately come down to the scent or are you influenced by the brands behind the perfume?

I don't mind if it's celebrity or designer! As long as it smells good, I'll buy it. My favs are Christian Dior, boss orange, Versace, Britney Spears and rihanna! I'll even buy imitation, I don't mind lol.

I would definitely vote designer fragrance every time. I guess for many people (me included) perfume is much more than a pretty scent in a pretty bottle. The history of perfume is as old as human civilization, and so I feel that there is something really strange about celebrity perfumes, which have an air of transience not unlike the celebrities behind the scents themselves. How can Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift compete with the austere, yet simply sophisticated glass bottle of Chanel no.5 that has been around since the Twenties? The authentic feeling that surrounds some designer fragrances, simply cannot be replaced and/or compared to celebrity fragrances, regardless of how pretty they smell! In the end, it all goes back to why one falls in love with a fragrance. If it is the scent, the history, the branded house, or is it the person behind the scent?

I love perfume and have quite a big collection. Most of it is celebrity fragrance! I do have a couple of designer ones but generally it's the celeb ones. I adore Britney's ones. She seems to be the queen of the celeb fragrance market. Just thinking off the top of my head, I currently own or have used up pretty much every Britney one, a few Paris Hilton ones, Mariah Carey, J Lo, Madonna, Rhianna, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Baby Phat. Um ok, maybe I have a slight problem ;)

I used to be exactly like you, a fragrance snob but now have a collection that is a happy mix!

My dad used to do a fair amount of travel for work and loved to buy nice perfumes duty free for my mother (and later me!) so I grew up smelling all her lovely perfumes and acquired a 'taste' for designer scents I guess you could say. Just always had the idea that celeb fragrances would smell tacky and it wasn't until this year actually that I tried them! I now own a collective mixture of designer and celebrity and while 'designer' scents are definitely my favourite, I love using my celebrity scents on an everyday basis without having to use my 'special' ones up :)

If it smells nice I will buy it regardless and granted I can afford it. I love perfumes/sprays with vanilla notes to it.

To be honest, the only thing that first attracts me to a perfume is its bottle (equally I can be put off by it also). In terms of how likely I am to buy it, it's the scent that ultimately decides it, not the name or brand! I love fruity, slightly sweet scents, and a lot of celebrity fragrances seem to tend towards that type, plus they're usually a little less expensive, so I do have a couple. But as I say, it's the scent (and bottle), not the name that attracts me!

I am always pretty sceptical about celebrity fragrances as i always feel that they are more about marketing and making money than about actually creating a nice smelling product. I have been surprised as I really like Katy Perry's one so I will be investigating and trying some more celeb ones in the future.

I love designer fragrances, although some celebrity ones are quite nice, I find I tend to like the designer fragrances better. Ive smelt a few of the celebrity ones but they never really appeal to me

I don't think I've ever bought a celebrity fragrance. I buy a fragrance because I like how it smells on me and how long it will last. Pretty bottles are nice but it's what's inside that counts and as I recently discovered my perfume should be on top of my dresser since the sun will hit there and heat up the fragrance and alter it. If I have a pretty bottle I'm more likely to put it on display so plain bottles are probably better for me so I will keep them in the drawer out of the sunlight. To me it doesn't matter whether it's a celebrity fragrance or designer one if I like the scent on me, it's lingers long enough to be worth the money and most importantly I can afford it, I'll buy it. So far I haven't come across a celebrity fragrance I liked enough to buy that being said I haven't been a fan of some the really popular designer and fragrances enough to buy them. I am rather picky with perfumes, but that does have benefits on the wallet and on the beauty review vault days not to be caught up in the mad rush for certain popular coveted fragrances, although last vault I did spy two of the very few fragrances I liked but unfortunately it was snapped up before I got a chance to cart them.

Ive brought lots of celebrity fragrances. They are sweet smelling. Have always wanted designer fragrances. They do cost alot of money. My fav celebs taylor swift, SJP, Rihanna. My fav designers ralp lauren, christian dior, armani, most of all marc jacobs. I wish i could afford them all lol

I too used to be perfume snob... I never, before the days of BR, would have considered buying ANY celebrity perfume. But just like BR Natalie, my Dior is now cozy with Selena Gomez, and Taylor swift is snuggling with my Diesel. I still prefer designer but have lapsed to include very select celebs; in fact those are my only two so far and no way am I even sniffing them If I don't like the artist). Before BR I had two full size scents and a set of 5 minis, now I have Marc Jacobs and Vera fighting over who will sneak in next to my newest addition (as of tonight) V&R BonBon... I think I might have a problem (I blame the awesome bottles they are coming out with). While my YSL Yvresse still sits up on a pedestal looking down over all her beloved devotees like the queen bee that she is.

mmmmmm, I have never smelt Celebrity fragrances. I have never been drawn to them. I could be missing out....

27th July, 2014

I have one designer fragrance (Daisy by Marc Jacobs) and one celeb fragrance (Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift) and I love both of them. :) I love my sweeter smelling fragrances or anything that smells like my favourite fruits/spices/flowers :D

27th July, 2014

I LOVE all the designer fragrances listed above! Two are my two current lusted-after perfumes. I'm definately more drawn to them, both in terms of bottle design and fragrance, as I agree with Colleen in that a lot of the Celebrity fragrances tend to be too sweet for my personal preference, although there's a few of the Britney Spears I like and I was given a Nicki Minaj fragrance I have grown to love.

So today I may have purchased Lady Gaga Fame without even smelling it (the spray cap on the tester was missing) after reading the awesome reviews on it, so pretty and feminine smelling!
