Designer vs Celebrity Fragrances

Article by BR Natalie

There's a distinct divide in the fragrance world, and we're not talking about scents.  In the left corner we have your 'traditional' or 'designer' fragrances, usually from established fragrance houses.  In the right corner, you'll find your celebrity fragrances.  More often than not the celebrity behind the brand claims to have had a 'nose' in the creating of their fragrance, but many fragrance and celebrity pairings seem to be a marriage of marketing convienience.

I admit I used to be a bit of a perfume snob.  My perfume collection consisted of Christian Dior - Dolce Vita and J'adore, Chanel No. 5 and Jean Paul Gaultier.  And then I joined the Beauty Crew.  I started reading glowing reviews for perfumes I'd dismissed as 'tacky' or 'cheap', without even smelling them.  Well my dresser now consists a happy medley of designer and celebrity fragrances.  Jean Paul Gaultier sits next to Taylor Swift.  Mariah Carey is cosying up to Christian Dior.

But as always, it's not our opinion that counts - we want to know how our members view celebrity fragrances vs designer fragrances.  And to help you decide we've compiled the Top 5 Designer and Top 5 Celebrity Fragrances*, as rated by you, our members. So why not check out the list and tell us your thoughts on the ultimate fragrance battle - designers vs celebrities, does it ultimately come down to the scent or are you influenced by the brands behind the perfume?

Interesting post! I actually prefer some celebrity fragrances over some designer ones. Katy Perry Purr smells SO SO GOOD! Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday smells amazing too. I honestly don't care about the celebrity hosting the fragrances, I just think they genuinely smell so good. Lola by Marc Jacobs smells really nice too - if you like florals! And I haven't smelt Rihanna's Reb'l Fleur by Rihanna however I AM digging the name - pfft I wonder why?

My problem with the celebrity fragrance is that generally they are just far too sweet for me. I have given them a wide berth until recently, I got the James & Elizabeth Nirvana White in the rollerball. I love it. It's delicate yet the musk gives it an edge. Celebrity fragrance purchased!

Definitely the traditional fragrances! most of the celebrity fragrances I've tried smell like the $2.00 bottles of Australis you can buy at sydney markets - somethig more akin to toilet air feshners. For my money you can't go past Chanel no. 5 and other stalwarts like Opium and Red Door! I must say though, the bottles containing the celebrity perfumes are totally gorgeous and imaginative.

They all look stunning and sound amazing.

But to be honest. I don't buy them anymore.

I'm an impulse girl atm haha , broke as. If I had any gorgeous scents left, my girls would steal them pretty quick.

I love both!! Designer probably takes the cake for me though, they seem to be longer lasting in my opinion. Dior and gucci being my favorite brands for designer perfume, and jessica simpson fancy and Rihanna being my favorite celebrity perfumes.

I completely agree with the comments before me I'm a Gucci and Estée Lauder girl and love my designer scents I have had a few celebrity scents brought for me and only 1 or 2 I wear sometimes, others were to orangey smelling or too sweet (I call them lollipop smells) so I am definitely a designer girl!!!!

I tend towards the designers. I think it's more because I assume they will be around longer, it takes me so long to finish a bottle and if I want another one the celebrity might be over by then ;)

I am extremely fussy when it comes to fragrances. The celebrity fragrances I have tried all smell horrible to me (I must have a sensitive nose lol) and I just think they smell like toilet spray he he he. Designer fragrances are really yummy although some not so nice. The exception though with the celebrity fragrance would be the Britney Spears Curious, that is probably the only one that I think smells nice xx

Designer fragrance for me :) they are so awesome, so yes a fragrance snob

I like Chanel but can't say I have ever tried any of the others shown above. I have sampled a few celebrity perfumes but never found one that I have liked or purchased.

I am a designer fragrance fan but only because I don't or haven't liked the scent of the celebrity ones. I am quite fussy when it comes to perfume though, I really, really have to like the scent and I tend to gravitate towards the smokey, woody, spicy ones, not floral at all.

For me it is the bottle first, if it looks good then I will do the sniff test, I must admit I do prefer the designer fragrances as I feel these are luxurious, timeless even and have a just for "me" feel, whereas the celebrity fragrances to me are fleeting and don't have the staying power although in saying this there are some nice scents, my girls have Nicki Minaj and I think it is JLo

I would much rather purchase a designer fragrance than a celebrity fragrance - it may sound snobby but there's just something so tacky about celebrity perfumes. I don't like any of the celebrity fragrances on this list BUT I do love Killer Queen by Katy Perry. It doesn't smell as sweet or sickly as some of the other celebrity scents.

I also feel like the quality of designer scents tops the celebrity ones!

31st July, 2014

For me, choosing a perfume is all about the scent. It doesn't bother me who's created it and I own both designer and celebrity fragrances. I own both Viva La Juicy and Lady Gaga's Fame from the list and love both of them!

29th July, 2014

To be honest it comes down to scent for me, however I am not likely to go out and by a celebrity fragrance when I'm not a fan of that celebrity! on the other hand I wouldn't buy a fragrance simply because I was a fan either. My collection consists of Rhianna Rebelle; Elizabeth Ardens Provocative Woman and Pretty. The Rhianna perfume is really the first celebrity one that I have found stays on my skin (have tried my mums Mariah and I used to have a Britney one). Overall I think scent and being long lasting are the reasons I would purchase a purfume
