Disco Face – Are You Ready To Strobe?

You’ve spent more time learning to contour than you’ve spent shopping for makeup. You’ve finally mastered it. Your face is looking slimmer and anyone would think you have supermodel-like cheekbones. Woo. Hoo. Now all of a sudden the makeup powers that be are telling you contouring is out and strobing is in. Soooo many hours learning a rather difficult technique and, just like that, overnight it’s become passé. Well, it’s enough to make a girl want to throw her toys, or her makeup brushes.

So what is this strobing business? Basically it’s ignoring the shading part of contouring, and simply using highlighting products on the parts of your face where light naturally hits in order to create a fresh and glowy look.  So what parts of the face will you want to apply your highlight stick or cream? The tops of cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, your lips, you can even pop highlighter on the centre of your forehead, along the brow bone, your chin and in the corners of your eyes. If you really want to go all out, you can add some highlighting cream to your tinted moisturiser or foundation to give your skin a touch of all-over glow before going in with highlight on specific areas of your face.

So is strobing all that and a bag of chips? It would appear so, but it does pay to be judicious in your application. While there are some gorgeous examples of strobing online, there are also some examples where the wearer appears to have rolled around in an oil slick. Not pretty. Not pretty at all.

So will you be jumping aboard the strobing train? Or will you shun the fad and stick to contouring, preferring chiseled cheekbones and jawlines over the delights of a disco-ball face?

Love it

I love highlighting my brow bone, chin bridge of my nose forehead, but I am 47 and find strobing of highlighting my undereye area just helps to show off my undereye fine lines,I need to fine that magic highlighting product that does not show off my find lines,I have tried highlighting setting powder straight under my eyes but it still creases.i still contour my cheekbones and until I find the wonder highlight or strobe cream for my undereye area,I will leave that area for the younger girls lol

Haven't tried contouring yet so strobing will be even more of a mystery to me.

21st June, 2015

Considering I'm still yet to master a good contour I'm all for strobing! One less thing I need to learn lol

21st June, 2015

I do this in a very subtle way however I still like to warm up my face with bronzer too. I've never been one for extremes - contour for me was too much for an everyday look as is proper 'strobing' - I feel awkward when I'm all shiny during the day! I do prefer a very highlighted look as opposed to a very contoured one though I must say :)

I do this :) I've done it for the past 6 months because I can't find my contour colour anywhere haha. Another reason I barely contour these days is because I'm so pale. But I will invest in a taupe shadow for contouring....instead a brown.......one day....when I get around to it

I love highlighting!! I always highlight. I like the term strobing lol guess I've been trending without even knowing it!

i gave up on contouring hehe think i'll give this a go instead

19th June, 2015

Yep I'd do strobing. It looks lovely.

19th June, 2015

As a look I prefer contouring, as a technique strobing is certainly quicker and easier.

19th June, 2015

I am soooooooo in to the strobing look! I can not for the life of me master contour no matter what I do so strobing looks like the best alternative. It looks stunning too.

19th June, 2015

I would do strobing any day, I find that contouring doesn't quite work for me. I use my Dior Amber Diamonds for highlighting on a daily basis, and doesn't look too obvious, it looks very natural.

19th June, 2015

Seems like strobing is just a more intense version of highlighting?

19th June, 2015

I've actually never heard of it! Shows just how up to date I am. Unfortunately, I haven't even mastered contouring yet so sure I'd give it a go!

19th June, 2015

I'm super intrigued by this whole strobing business! I don't know how good it'll look on me but I'm super keen to give it a go, think that might be my little indoor project tomorrow if the weather continues like this! My skin's dry so definitely benefits from looking as glowy as possible - it's worth a crack!

I don't even know how to contour or anything yet haha, just started getting into makeup and will start building a beginners kit soon hopefully! :)
