You’ve spent more time learning to contour than you’ve spent shopping for makeup. You’ve finally mastered it. Your face is looking slimmer and anyone would think you have supermodel-like cheekbones. Woo. Hoo. Now all of a sudden the makeup powers that be are telling you contouring is out and strobing is in. Soooo many hours learning a rather difficult technique and, just like that, overnight it’s become passé. Well, it’s enough to make a girl want to throw her toys, or her makeup brushes.

So what is this strobing business? Basically it’s ignoring the shading part of contouring, and simply using highlighting products on the parts of your face where light naturally hits in order to create a fresh and glowy look. So what parts of the face will you want to apply your highlight stick or cream? The tops of cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, your lips, you can even pop highlighter on the centre of your forehead, along the brow bone, your chin and in the corners of your eyes. If you really want to go all out, you can add some highlighting cream to your tinted moisturiser or foundation to give your skin a touch of all-over glow before going in with highlight on specific areas of your face.
So is strobing all that and a bag of chips? It would appear so, but it does pay to be judicious in your application. While there are some gorgeous examples of strobing online, there are also some examples where the wearer appears to have rolled around in an oil slick. Not pretty. Not pretty at all.
So will you be jumping aboard the strobing train? Or will you shun the fad and stick to contouring, preferring chiseled cheekbones and jawlines over the delights of a disco-ball face?
