Discover The Power Of Setting Powder!

By BR Kellie

It's time for a Kellie Confession.

Before becoming a BR addict I had never once used a setting powder in my life. The truth is, I feared it. After a terrible experience with a powder foundation (think patchy and clingy and a tad mask-like) I had decided anything flesh coloured and powdery was not to touch my skin, and setting powder fell into that category.

Enter Beauty Review, the Beauty Review community and a new Beauty Vlogger-watching obsession. Suddenly it appeared I had well misinformed myself and actually had to have, or at very least try, setting powder in order to discover it's amazing properties. So I did. I picked up Rimmel's Stay Matte Pressed Powder because it rates its socks off, and with a quivering kabuki brush dusted it over my freshly-foundationed and concealed face.

Well, colour me converted. So what's the big deal about setting powder? Why do you need one in your life? Read on...

First of all, it helps your foundation stick around longer. My skin tends to eat makeup, so I need all the help I can get, and a dusting of pressed powder post-foundation and concealer application really works wonders.

Next - as the name suggests - it mattifies. So if you're prone to a little shine you can use a dusting of setting powder to help reduce said shine. You don't even need to powder your entire face if that's not your thing, just dusting the areas prone to oiliness can make a difference.

I'm a fan of translucent pressed powders, a hangover from my previous powder foundation experience, but a good setting powder matched to your skin tone can also provide a little extra coverage, even out skin and further help to hide imperfections.

A setting powder can also save the day if you've gone a touch overboard with the bronzer or blush and need to tone it down, just load up your brush and get buffing.

One tip? If you do find you've overpowdered and you're not willing to wipe the lot off and start again... reach for a setting spray and get spritzing. More often than not I find this somehow calms the powder farm down, removes cake-face and sets me up for a great makeup day.

So, are you a fan of setting powder? Which is your favourite and why? Or are you yet to discover the gloriousness of a good one? If not, why not? Chat away!

I have dry skin, so prefer not to use any setting powder! Unless one is recommended for dry skin types?! I have yet to find ... :)

I love translucent powders. I can't wear foundation without setting it with powder otherwise it slides off my face. I'm currently using the Rimmel one too.

I always finish off my makeup with a colour correcting powder, it has 4 different shades, this has really lifted the end result and I am really happy to use it. However, I am finding a colour correcting powder pallet is starting to be harder to find, I have hit pan, and am on the lookout for another. To me this is a necessity as it really does help with mattifying oilier skin, and longevity of makeup

I always use a setting powder - right now the Rimmel Stay Matte powder is my favorite and I think that'll stay the same for a while. Since I have oily skin it mattifies my face, but I have to be careful not to go overboard so my dry patches flare up. Powder makes my concealer (and foundation on the days I wear it) last so much longer. I also spray with my Mario Badescu Rosewater Spray afterwards so my face doesn't look cakey and gross.

I do not always set my foundation in powder when I was young and had oily skin I did. I have big pores on my face some times powders show them up more. The above I have heard quite good things about. I have a few pressed powders and one loose one. I find adding the powders add to the make up looking cracked and cakey later on though! Powder does help correct too much blush etc though I guess it is helpful for oily skin and some people just moisturize and then use powder with no liquid foundation

Oh my, this sounds awesome Kellie, however I am a scardy cat when it comes to anything powder. I might just have to give it a go though as you are rather convincing.

Definitely love powder - helps to set things and prevents concealer from creasing under the eyes. Australis has a great powder!

Hmmmmm I was a bit like you Kellie, bad experience from years back with powders lol. In saying that things change and it actually could be worth my while trying one again

27th June, 2017

My skin is so dry so I steer clear of powders.

27th June, 2017

I love setting powder, couldn't be without it.

I use a Nutrimetics translucent powder I've used for a hundred years. Still works as well as the day I bought it. Sometimes I use Thin Lizzy mineral powder instead though, because I need some colour.

I've been using Ben Nye setting powder and I like it a lot. But I don't really use it everyday.

27th June, 2017

No I haven't used setting powder yet. I was starring at this in Kmart Last night. Should of got it. If this article isn't a sign I dunno what is lol

I have never used a setting powder before. I find my foundation lasts long enough and does a good job at staying in place. I use Maybelline fit me dewy liquid foundation and I have oily skin. There's just no need for it in my opinion.

Quite the opposite, I sometimes really lazy out and use just the setting powder, not foundation! Currently digging how guerlain meteorites mattifies out my sunscreen but still adds a subtle shimmer glow all over.

Oohh I'd love to try these, but, are they worth the price? The packaging looks great though.

Not gonna lie I bought it for the packaging lol. But I do really like the finish it gives, it's looks really luxurious but not overly glowy. You could always look on trademe or something, maybe if you're lucky you could find it cheaper online.
