Ask any girl for her top makeup products and mascara is bound to be close to the top of the list.

Just a touch of mascara can open and brighten the eyes, making you look and feel like you're at least halfway human!

But how many people would rate an eyelash curler as one of their top makeup products?  For many people weilding a metal clamp near their eyes is a hurdle they'd rather not jump over.  But oh - if you take that leap you'll probably never look back - instead you'll face the world head on, with beautifully curled lashes, that look thicker and more full.

Here's our top tips:

  1. Always use eyelash curlers on clean eyelashes.  If you use them after mascara, or even with traces of mascara on the lash, the mascara can stick and you might just pull out a lash or two.  (Sad times)
  2. Be sure to get all of the lashes (and no skin!) in to the curler.  Start at the base and gently press the curler shut.  Hold for 3 seconds.
  3. Repeat for the middle and ends of the lash length.
  4. Don't fall in to the trap of "if I hold it longer they'll curl more".  Any longer than 3-5 seconds and you're going to crimp not curl!
  5. Don't worry about curling the bottom lashes.
  6. Some people might suggest warming the lash curler with a hair dryer beforehand - personally we don't think this is necessary, and if you are going to do this, excercise extreme caution!

We've got a lovely trial opportunity for 20 members.  We'll be putting ZA's Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara and Eyelash Curler to the test!  The Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara is simultaneously achieves separate lashes with volume and length. It gives you separate, upward lashes with volume in two easy actions.  The ZA Eyelash Curler has a flatter arch that fits all eye shapes and effectively curls up all eyelashes!

So if this sounds like a trial team you'd like to be a part of, why not tell us your experiences with eyelash curlers.  Do you religiously use one as part of your makeup routine?  Or maybe you've never tried one - what's stopping you?

I have never used an eyelash curler before, I know I'm insane. It's amusing I haven't when my sister lives by her mascara and eyelash curler.

I use an eyelash curler every day, it makes the lashes look longer and it is generally a nicer look with curled lashes. A great trick is to run the eyelash curler under hot water before using this curls the lashes more and makes it hold all day.

Back in high school I used to have an eyelash curler which I used religiously whenever I went out some where along the line that got lost and I just never replaced it

I have never used and because I haven't, I never thought of anything going wrong like "catching your eyelid!" No thanks :-)

I only use my eyelash curler when i am going out and i dont put falsies on, not a major fan of my curler this could be why i tend not to use it much. Would love to see how this one works :) I have not left the house with out mascara on since 12, i am really fussy when it comes to my mascara but i dont think i have found a perfect mascara yet.

I always use an eyelash curler whenever I use mascara. I love how it makes your eyelashes look longer and opens up your eyes making them look bigger. I used to never bother with curling my lashes, but once I started I loved the look and have now never stopped! But I always curl my lashes before I apply mascara, as doing it after can cause breakage and make you lashes more brittle because the mascara stiffens your lashes. I'd love to try Za's curler and mascara as I think the arch on my curler is a little too big for my small eyes.

I do, although Ive had some bad experiences where my eyelashes stuck and ripped out :(

I lovvveee them honestly girls who don't use them/don't know the benefit of using one are just missing out ! mine broke though so scouting for a new amazing one to test out :)

I always do, lashes arn't complete without the curl :)

I pretty much always use a curler, especially if I'm wearing flasies as it helps to blend the lashes together before applying mascara! I can't say I've found a curler I'm too happy with though so I can't wait to find out how this trial works out!!

Have never tried one, not really been aware of what difference they could really make. I am told my eyelashes are long but I think they don't really stand out. Could be worth trying this.

Yes I do use an eyelash curler as I was not blessed with lovely lush lashes. The curler really makes a difference to opening my eyes up & giving a fresher look.

I use mine every day, but I didn't know that you get the same result from 3 seconds that you get from 30 seconds! (I read somewhere that 30 seconds was how long you need to use it for) Thank you, this tip will save me some time in the morning now! I'd be keen to try this one out, my current curler is getting a bit ratty now and I was going to buy a new one anyway...

I have never used one personally. I have a best mate that uses hers religiously. I'm fascinated at how she uses hers so it maybe time to try my own hand at this. Hope it's easy to use one.

I use my eyelash curler almost daily. I have unfortunately had the horrible experience of pinching my eyelids (even with so-called "no-pinch" curlers) but thankfully not pulled any lashes out. I have tried the curling after mascara trick but it just clumps my lashes together and makes them look too spidery. I have not tried the heating trick because I personally do not Iike the idea of holding a metal hot clamp close to my eyes, and curling them without heat works just fine :) I've never owned a proper branded curler before (poor student, I am) and so this would be great to own, as well as the fact that that one of the first mascara I've had was a ZA one and is still one of my all-time favourite mascaras, after all these years.
