Ask any girl for her top makeup products and mascara is bound to be close to the top of the list.

Just a touch of mascara can open and brighten the eyes, making you look and feel like you're at least halfway human!

But how many people would rate an eyelash curler as one of their top makeup products?  For many people weilding a metal clamp near their eyes is a hurdle they'd rather not jump over.  But oh - if you take that leap you'll probably never look back - instead you'll face the world head on, with beautifully curled lashes, that look thicker and more full.

Here's our top tips:

  1. Always use eyelash curlers on clean eyelashes.  If you use them after mascara, or even with traces of mascara on the lash, the mascara can stick and you might just pull out a lash or two.  (Sad times)
  2. Be sure to get all of the lashes (and no skin!) in to the curler.  Start at the base and gently press the curler shut.  Hold for 3 seconds.
  3. Repeat for the middle and ends of the lash length.
  4. Don't fall in to the trap of "if I hold it longer they'll curl more".  Any longer than 3-5 seconds and you're going to crimp not curl!
  5. Don't worry about curling the bottom lashes.
  6. Some people might suggest warming the lash curler with a hair dryer beforehand - personally we don't think this is necessary, and if you are going to do this, excercise extreme caution!

We've got a lovely trial opportunity for 20 members.  We'll be putting ZA's Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara and Eyelash Curler to the test!  The Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara is simultaneously achieves separate lashes with volume and length. It gives you separate, upward lashes with volume in two easy actions.  The ZA Eyelash Curler has a flatter arch that fits all eye shapes and effectively curls up all eyelashes!

So if this sounds like a trial team you'd like to be a part of, why not tell us your experiences with eyelash curlers.  Do you religiously use one as part of your makeup routine?  Or maybe you've never tried one - what's stopping you?

This sounds fab and I would love to try them both. I have straightish lashes so they need a bit of help. I have used a curler for as long as I remember as part of the daily routine. I'd probably go into a tail spin if it broke!

Omg! That's the set I was looking at buying! I don't have an eyelash curler or a mascara and I currently NEED one I would love to be part of this trial team. Thanks for mentioning the tips, they're helpful for a first time user like me.

I have an eyelash curler but I never use it. I've attempted to in the past but always just ended up pinching my eyelids (ouch!) and having crooked, kinked lashes so just have up hope!

I've always loved the way they look curled but I get lazy bcos I have to put contact lenses and foundation I can't be bothered curling even tho I love how my lashes look curled... I do struggle finding a decent mascara that i like so would be nice to try and get into a routine :-)

I dont use them much because i need to sit there for a while before my lashes curl its only when i have extra time i use a curler

Being in the beauty industry I always have to 'Look' the part, which includes curling my eyelashes EVERY day - some times twice a day. I have tried eyelash perming but it never held longer then 2 weeks and that gets expensive after while. I have tried many different types of curlers and am still looking for the perfect one made just for long eyelashes

I don't usually use eyelash curlers because I find they leave a kink in my lashes that is not very attractive! I'd love to try this one out though and see if it gives better results!

EVERYDAY. I'm pretty sure it's not that good for you but I swear an eyelash curler is my one beauty must have (that or an eyebrow pencil, please don't make me choose). I have naturally straight Asian eyelashes that just grow straight down, covering part of my eye so my eyes look so small and tired if I don't curl them. Curling my lashes would be the one thing I would do if I was having a 'no make up' day.

I NEED to curl my lashes. I have extremely stubborn lashes, never wants to curl always just sticks straight out ???? such a pain. I cant live without my curlers!!

I only occasionally use a curler but I do always heat it up before use to get that extra curl. And of course mascara is an essential item

25th June, 2014

Yes! An eyelash curler and mascara is a must in my everyday makeup routine. With short, straight Asian eyelashes, I wouldn't dare to leave home without the pair. I am currently using a Manicare brand eyelash curler, which does an okay job. Have tried heated eyelash curlers in the past, but have had no luck with them.

I did use it everytime until I lost it! And did find they did make a difference and I liked that difference. I even saw a youtube vid where you can draw eyeliner on the curler and curl and do perfect eyeliner at the same time! So gonna give that a try

25th June, 2014

yes everytime though haven't got one at the moment the last ones were a cheap pair and broke but would LOVE to try the Za ones :D

25th June, 2014

I haven't used one before but id like to give it a try as I have really long eyelashes.

Eyelash curlers can be a hit and miss. They're great for this time of the year, when the weather can cause mascara to run or smudge , and so using a curler allows the lashes to curl upwards, thus avoiding the unsightly blackening of the lower lids. However, being short-sighted, I struggle to use a curler effectively, as I often poke my eyes. In saying that, a small (pink) curler, like the Za one, might be just what I need. Combine that with a smudge proof mascara, and I'm good to go.
