Ask any girl for her top makeup products and mascara is bound to be close to the top of the list.

Just a touch of mascara can open and brighten the eyes, making you look and feel like you're at least halfway human!

But how many people would rate an eyelash curler as one of their top makeup products?  For many people weilding a metal clamp near their eyes is a hurdle they'd rather not jump over.  But oh - if you take that leap you'll probably never look back - instead you'll face the world head on, with beautifully curled lashes, that look thicker and more full.

Here's our top tips:

  1. Always use eyelash curlers on clean eyelashes.  If you use them after mascara, or even with traces of mascara on the lash, the mascara can stick and you might just pull out a lash or two.  (Sad times)
  2. Be sure to get all of the lashes (and no skin!) in to the curler.  Start at the base and gently press the curler shut.  Hold for 3 seconds.
  3. Repeat for the middle and ends of the lash length.
  4. Don't fall in to the trap of "if I hold it longer they'll curl more".  Any longer than 3-5 seconds and you're going to crimp not curl!
  5. Don't worry about curling the bottom lashes.
  6. Some people might suggest warming the lash curler with a hair dryer beforehand - personally we don't think this is necessary, and if you are going to do this, excercise extreme caution!

We've got a lovely trial opportunity for 20 members.  We'll be putting ZA's Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara and Eyelash Curler to the test!  The Perfect Action Smudgeproof Mascara is simultaneously achieves separate lashes with volume and length. It gives you separate, upward lashes with volume in two easy actions.  The ZA Eyelash Curler has a flatter arch that fits all eye shapes and effectively curls up all eyelashes!

So if this sounds like a trial team you'd like to be a part of, why not tell us your experiences with eyelash curlers.  Do you religiously use one as part of your makeup routine?  Or maybe you've never tried one - what's stopping you?

Every single time ! I won't put on mascara without it! Unfortunately I wasn't blessed with curly lashes - instead they are practically straight so they are a life saver for me :) I would rate them above foundation or any other skin creams such as tinited moisturiser or BB cream in my top makeup products. Second only to mascara! Would love the opportunity to trial these as I never experiment with other brands for eyelash curlers or mascara and I use these products everyday :)

Ive only recently discovered the wonder of the eyelash curler and im never coing back but i have been using it with mascara on. Ive only been using a $2 shop curler i would love to see what this does and i like the idea of the no smudge mascara as i havent found a mascara that i really like yet.

I do have an eyelash curler, but day to day I always forget to use it as I'm in a rush. When I'm going out on the weekends or for dinner I use it and love the results!

I have straight lashes and I always have to use an eyelash curler even if I use a volumising mascara, I have to curl first before applying mascara. The best lash curler I used is from shu uemura but it is not as accesible in NZ. I always just buy my lash curlers from Daiso.

It's never been on my priority list to buy as I always seen to need to top up other products and brushes all the time! Definitely intrigued to trial this and give it a good go to see the difference it makes

I have a heated one & it's crap so I've lost faith in the eyelash curler. I have 1 eye that curls up naturally with mascara & the other one they just go outwards, it's annoying. I've been meaning to get a normal eyelash curler to see if it'll work but just haven't got round to it yet so would be keen for this trial. Also a smudge proof mascara would be amaze!

Haven't used one in years and cant really remember if the results were great or not. Would love to give it a try tho.

Always. With my short straight asian lashes, there's no point in putting on mascara if I haven't curled them first!

I used a lash curler every now and then but not on a regular basis. I have very long lashes which are actually a pain :( every morning my lashes are pointing in different directions, even poking me in the eyes which is why I use mascara daily to try and 'tame' my wild lashes. I would be super grateful to trial this and hopefully it would help me and my lashes :)

I definitely always use an eyelash curler - my eyelashes are extremely average in every way, and *extremely* stubbornly straight. Without a curler it's hardly even worth putting mascara on. :P I've heard really good things about both this curler and mascara... perfect trial methinks haha :)

25th June, 2014

I don't really use an eyelash curler only on special occasion or of I have time in the morning. On an everyday basis, I only use mascara and it gives me the volume and length I need. would love to try these prodExcited for this trial.

I use a curler basically every day. I like how it curls them at a great angle it makes my mascara application so much easier when my lashes are already pointing in the right direction. I don't need to fuss around as much using the mascara brush to get them looking good.

I have never used an eyelash curler... and whenever I have gone to buy one Hubby just laughs at me. He cracks jokes about movies like the Saw ones and how it looks like one of the torture devices... I am sure the purple colour might change his mind (plus purple is my signature colour lol). I would be gutted if I pinched myself with one though... oh I could hear him now lol

25th June, 2014

I have never actually used a clamp style one but i have used a heated one and that seemed to work pretty well but i only ever used it on a night out which isn't very often for me

25th June, 2014

I use one every so often I just have a cheap eyelash curler so would love to try a decent one! I do love how my lashes look after using an eyelash curler and should really get into a habit of using it all the time!

Lol my husband is the same. I try not use it in front of him so I don't get mocked :) I can't do without my curler. I have straight short eyelashes that need the extra help.
