Do you do a patch test?

It's probably not a surprise to hear that I come across, and try, a lot of beauty products.  And (touch wood) I've never had a serious reaction to a product.  You know, one that's resulted in a trip to the doctors, or forced house arrest due to looking all red and bumpy and scary.

When it comes to using a new product for the first time, I do exercise a bit of caution.  The sniff test is a definite step, the more fragranced and floral a product, the less likely I am to try it.   Highly 'chemical' things like hair dyes, definitely get patch tested.  Skincare products I judge based on ingredients and claims.  If a serum claims to be 1000 times more powerful than any other, you can guarantee I'm going to try it on my wrist and now beneath my eyes first!  Cosmetics I'm probably a bit more relaxed by, but then again the only thing I fully plaster on my face is primer.

Off the top of my head, I can think of two times when products have made my skin feel really uncomfortable.  The first happened when I was pregnant with Milky Chops.  I showered using a shower gel I'd been using for weeks and when I got out of the shower I could not stop itching.  Not minor itching.  But I-want-to-claw-my-own-skin-off itching.  After a week of this, I chatted to my midwife and switched to a non-SLS shower gel. The itching stopped.  And post-pregnancy I completely forgot about SLS, bought a scrummy shower gel containing said ingredient and have never had an issue since!

The second product was a night cream I used for about a week and loved.  I was raving about this night cream, until one night I applied it and felt my face burn.  I jumped straight into a cold shower and stayed there until the burning stopped.  My skin felt irritated but by morning it was fine.

So the only two products I've 'reacted' to were products I'd previously used and been fine with. Which makes me ponder upon patch testing.  Should I apply my lotions and potions tentatively every single time I use them, just in case?!

So come on, 'fess up - do you regularly do patch tests of new products?  Have you ever had a reaction, but neglected to do the patch test first?

Always on the inside of my wrist.

I always do a patch test (or try to) because I have sensitive skin. Ideally I would patch test it on y hand or arm first and then my face, but most of the time I just patch test on my face.

The only time I have EVER done a patch test was when I was doing an assignment for my hairdressing apprentichip and we had to prove we had done a patch test on our client. Apart from that iv never done one but luckly enough we have never had a reaction

I don't patch test but I'm vigilant and if it feels odd i get if off my face immediately. I try new stuff all the time.... mostly sans patch test

Guilty as charges! Haven't been caught out yet but never say never. You have made me feel quite guilty and pricked my conscience.

Oh haha 94% said no!! And I am one of that 94% - I actually have NEVER done a patch test - Oh wait, I have once done a hair strand test, does that count? And only because it was a bleach and had to test how long to leave it in for :)

I don't think I've ever done a patch test, oops!

I have never done a patch test, naughty me, I have been lucky so far in not having any reactions to products.

I have sensitive and fussy skin and I really should patch test but I get excited and use whatever. Luckily I haven't had a bad reaction to anything and it's always worked out fine but I must confess I really should!

22nd September, 2015

Thats the one thing i never do, not because i am lazy or fussy!! But because i never had any bad reactions from any of products i use.. I know its weird reason, and i think i should start having patch tests...actually i should find time to do patch test in store!!, But i buy products suitable for my skin, so never felt the need....... Feeling out of the world hahaha!!

I don't patch test often. Just stuff that's a bit more 'out there' from what I normally use (like bee venom creme). Tend to go by smell, if it reduces me to a runny eyed, sneezing/coughing mess I steer clear.

No I should do a patch test as I have sensitive skin and I colour my hair. I have had one instance of blisters on my eyelid which scared me a bit but I always leave colouring my hair to the last minute.I do wonder how successful patch tests are as I understand you can have a reaction at any time and if you are ok 48 hrs before I believe you can still get a reaction 48hrs later .My fingers are often crossed.
