Do you judge a product by its packaging?

We're very picky about the products we buy - will the colour suit us, does the price fit in to our budget, is the product readily available?  But how much does packaging affect our consumer choices?

When it comes to cosmetics and beauty products the packaging choices are vast, from refillable pumps to lipstick boxes you can plant and grow a flower from.  And what about the designs on the packaging - this is a brand's best shot at attracting your attention, so it's not surprising a lot of thought goes in to deciding what message a products packaging will deliver.

Health Basics recently repackaged their products to a New Zealand theme, with names such as Otago Summer Fruits, Kaimai Rainfall and Opito Bay Summer. Health Basics "hero ingredients" are locally sourced in NZ and 70% of their packaging is also manufactured here.

So how much does packaging affect your choice of product?  Is Kiwiana important to you in your beauty buys?  What other packaging aspects sway your choice?

Packaging tends to draw me to products and then I will read about the product and see if it fits my needs but yes it matters

Like others here I have to admit that packaging does make a difference. Even though it probably shouldn't!!

i dont tend to judge mine by the packaging, i look at what it is for ie moisturising or exfoliating and the scent as i don't really like there to be an overwhelming smell.

The packaging tells you something about the product inside, and in a line up of many products it has to make you look at it as an option

I definitely judge a product by it's packaging. Any great product will gain a great following and therefore be able to spend money on it's reputation - in most cases, its look and feel. I think Health Basics have done a great job!

Since its the first thing you spot when buying it, it absolutely makes a difference.

I'd like to think it didn't, but it does! If something sticks out to me and looks different or pretty or anything, i'd go and smell it before other ones that may have average packaging. If I didn't like the smell though I wouldn't buy it purely for the packaging, it's just a bonus and something that catches my attention first.

Packaging doesn't affect my choice, as long as the product smells good

I adore the health basics range, the hand washes are amaaaazing and I wont buy anything else now! I prefer quality/good product over pretty packaging however whatever is appealing to the eye is always going to get attention and us ladies like things that look impressive on display right (or just to look at I guess!)

The packaging is important to me as it is what first draws my eye to a product. It can also have an influence on how much I think the product is worth paying for - something that looks high quality and eye catching is something I don't mind paying that wee bit extra for. In the end, of course it is the product itself that makes the final decision for me, but to actually get me to look at a product, it is the packaging that draws me to it.

The packaging doesn't really concern me.. yeah its probably what draws me in first , but then I usually stand in the aisles reading everything on offer anyway and choose based on what I've read, rather than basing my decision on it.

I would be more attracted to products that reflect a kiwana ethos, would definitely make me consider buying :-)

I find that the packaging is what draws my attention to a product but it isn't what I base my decision on.

The thing that you are using every day have to have attractive and functional packaging. There are few things more annoying than bottles that tip over all the time or where you have to squeeze with both hands to get the product to dispense.

Yes, definitely and I started purchasing a lot more Pams when they redesigned their packaging. I do mostly use MAC, so black and sleek is always a go.
