Where do you look for beauty inspiration?  Magazines? Instagram? People on the street?  How about in your rubbish bin?

Yeap you read that right - destined for your rubbish bin could be some awesome leftovers that have other uses - be it for your skin, your hair or even your bath and shower needs!

Pumpkin.

Mash up cooked pumpkin leftovers (full of Vitamin A!) and add a little plain yoghurt, honey and olive oil to create a nourishing face mask that's great for oily skin.  Apply it to your face and leave it on until it hardens - then rinse!

Carrots.

Puree 1/2 cup of carrots (cooked or raw) and 1/2 cup of cranberries and mix with lemon juice.  Apply to your hair and sit in a steamy bathroom for 10 minutes before rinsing off.  This hair mask is said to reveal your natural highlights!

Parsley.

Blend parsley into a paste and apply to your undereyes before rinsing off after 15 minutes.  Parsley is high in Vitamin K which increases blood flow when applied topically - meaning your dark circles will be diminished and the skin around your eyes will look plumper and younger.

Orange Peel.

If you spend a little effort making some orange peel powder, you'll be amazed at what you can do with it; from lightening dark spots to treating acne!  The Vitamin C in the peel will encourage collagen production, which means...less wrinkles!

To make the orange peel powder, you'll need to bake the peel of two oranges.  Try to use organic oranges to eliminate any pesticides or fertilizers.  Bake them in a casserole dish for about 25 minutes on a low heat until they dry out.  Whizz them in a blender and then grind the smaller bits up by hand with a pestle and mortar.  You can store the powder for three months in an airtight container.

Things to do with orange peel powder:

  • Add it to your bath for a fabulous scented soak.
  • Add a teaspoon of powder to a cup of coconut water to create a face wash
  • If you fancy making bath bombs add some powder to your mixture.
  • Mix some into an unscented body lotion or hand cream.

Salt.

Don't throw salt over your shoulder - mix it with water and hair gel and create your own sea salt spray!  Try 2 teaspoons in 250ml of warm water with just a dab of hair gel mixed in.

Coffee.

You've heard of Coffee Scrubs right?  Miracle exfoliating products that can tackle cellulite?  Well you can add coffee grinds (from coffee that's been brewed) to your usual scrub recipe or you can try mixing the grinds in some olive oil and spreading them over the areas you're concerned about.  Wrap some glad wrap over the top and relax (well try to) for 10 - 20 minutes before rinsing off in the shower.

Now we're not suggesting you go rummaging through the rubbish to find the ingredients for these tricks and tips, but before you chuck something out, ask yourself if those leftovers can be used in a Beauty Bubble and Squeak!

Do you like to use every last drop of something?  Do you love finding ways to use all parts something like an orange for example?  What tips to you have to share?  Or does it all seem like a bit too much effort?

There are so many natural DIY recipes out there now. I'm keen to try some recipes with the orange peel as I love the smell of citrus

These are all great idea. The only idea I've thought of using is the coffee for making my own coffee scrub, but I don't drink coffee, so that's a bit of a problem there.I want to try the orange peel and salt since I always have these at home.

Love these tips! Wonder if you can do anything else with orange that's not powder? Would love to use it for acne scars

I have to use every last drop of every product to the point where I cut open my packing to squeeze the last bit out! I'm interested to see if anyone has tried these recipes.

This is awesome! I definitely use every last drop of something and when possible buy things that are in recyclable packaging. I use cleansers I'm not the fussed on to clean my makeup brushes

Lots of good ideas! I like mashing avo or banana into a mask with a few other ingredients

Use a bit of sugar and water to create a hand scrub, it leaves hands very soft.

Too much effort for me, shampoos I don’t like much get used as bubble bath for the kids

Awesome, we use most of our leftovers as we are really frugal with food, but I will try some of these tips, gotta be good right?!

Oh I love the idea of the parsley paste and the orange peel powder, I will be giving these a go! The coffee scrub is an awesome one, I like to mix coffee grinds with the Bossy coconut oil and make a delicious scrub, great for gifts as well. If I have avocados that have ripened too quickly, I mash them up and mix them with olive oil and apply this to all over my hair. Wait 30-40 minutes and then rinse, it gives my hair a good clean and leaves it soft and shiny.

Already do the coffee scrub one but love the sound of the orange peel powder, some great tips there. Definitely keen to give some of those a try. I love the smell of orange.

Ohhhh here is the hair mask one! Some would say it is expensive but then look at what we pay for store bought cosmetics this looks fun if you have the stuff at home then why not

There’s only one I’ve tried . It’s mymums Manuka honey and porridge facemask .,Never failed .

I used to be a total greenie, but not so much now. I hate wasting anything, or buying anything that comes with 10 plastic wrappers though.

12th January, 2018

I have too many ready made beauty products so won't be making my own. I just compost/worm farm all my scraps.

I always look at the packaging Maree and think that a lot of the time there is way too much! I try to avoid it where I can.

It's ridiculous, packets inside packets! I guess the more plastic the more processed generally speaking so it's a double whammy.

I agree Maree -packaging is such a waste and not only adds to the cost but bad for the environment.

I love the idea of the parsley paste too although not a huge fan of the smell he he he xx I like what you do with the avocados but unfortunately I love eating them that much that they don't get chance to be used as a mask lol

Mumof3munchkins I love to eat them too but Im really fussy lol, if theyve gone too soft or started going brown on the inside I wont eat them :)
