We're constantly told the importance of getting our eyebrows right. Over-pluck them and you'll look like a crazy woman. Over-arch them and you'll look like a crazy woman. Over-fill them and you'll look like, yeap, you got it; a crazy woman.
It doesn't matter whether you are starting with too-few or too much when you're shaping your brows. Thanks to tweezers and brow products like pencils, mousses and powders, you can create the perfect shape for your face with a bit of practise. You can even add volume to your existing brows with products like L'Oreal Brow Artist Plumper. This product actually has 0.4mm fibres in the gel formula, meaning you can shade, add volume and set your brows - all with one product!
Here's some quick hints on choosing the right brow shape for your face.
1. Know your brow.
Angelina Jolie has perfectly shaped eyebrows. Check out this handy diagram from Style Craze and learn the key parts to the perfect brow.
1 - Inner brow. Aim to start this in line with the inner corner of your eye.
2 - Arch. Look straight into the mirror. Your arch should begin level with the far edge of your iris and diagonally from your nostril.
3 - Outer brow. Your brow should end in a diagonal line with your nostril and and outer corner of your eye.
2. Know how to tweak the basics for your face shape.
Thanks to this slightly scary, but super useful diagram from the NASA handbook you can see the basic tweaks needed for your face shape.
- Oval faces are perfect for the full, straight brow, needing just a slight arch to frame the face.
- Round faces suit angular brows with high arches to add length to the face.
- Long faces suit slightly longer eyebrows, this is because the horizontal feature will balance out the vertical features of an elongated face.
- Square faces should opt for slightly rounded brows to soften angular features.
- Heart faces should steer clear of the full brow trend and opt for immaculately and perfectly groomed brows. Thin is never in when it comes to brows but you should opt for a neat taper that balances out a pointy chin.
- Diamond faces suit a slightly rounded arch to narrow the top of the face
3. Follow the shaping steps.
- Ensure your brows are clean and dry. You can't perfectly fill in brows that have foundation, BB cream or left over skincare products clinging to the hair.
- Hold your pencil or brush vertically against the side of your nostril. This is where your eyebrows should start.
- Hold your pencil or brush diagonally from your nostril to the outer corner of your eye. Where the line intersects your eyebrow is where they should end.
- Stare straight at the mirror. Your arch should begin level with the far edge of your iris, right on the brow bone.
- Brush your brows up using a spooly brush. This will show you the areas that need filling in.
- If you're using a pencil - Use short, soft 'dashes'
- If you're using a powder- Apply lightly with an angled brush to sparse areas
- However you're filling them - use a shade close to your natural colour and aim for the lines to be 'barely there'.
- Use the spooly brush to blend the colours
- Set with a clear or coloured eyebrow gel.
And there you have it - the BR guide to finding the right brow shape for your face. Did you learn anything new?
