The Four P's of the Perfect Lip Look!

There's something about the darkening days that makes me want to toss my gloss and rock a dark lip, whether that be a ruby red, plush plum, majestic mahogany or a rich, espresso brown. However, unlike a gloss, there is a commitment involved with wearing a dark lip. You need to prep before your step out, and keep up maintenance throughout the day, or you can end up dealing with feathering, flakiness and/or patchiness. So how can we keep our lip look looking fresh and fab? Read on!

Prep.

A little prep goes a long way! Before applying your lipstick of choice, exfoliate your lips with a sugar scrub, toothbrush, or a muslin cloth. Once your lips are free from flakes apply a lip balm. Give this a goodly amount of time to sink in, then remove any extra.

Prime.

To really lock in the colour and help stop feathering a good clear lip primer is a must. Use this around the outer perimeter of your mouth to help prevent the colour feathering into any fine lines.

Primp.

Grab a lip liner that is as similar as possible to your lip colour of choice, then line and fill your lips. Filling your lips creates an excellent base for your lipstick. Once that's done, grab a tissue and blot your lips.

Next... pop your lippy on! Then blot once more. Go in a second time with your lipstick, then blot again to make sure the pigment is really pressed into your lips.

Perfect.

There's nothing worse that looking in the mirror and realising you've lipstick all over your teeth. So before you head out, do the finger pop. Pop your pointer finger in your mouth then pull it out to help remove any lipstick that might migrate to your teeth. Check your teeth to be sure all is looking good, then pop a compact mirror and your lippy in your bag just in case you need to do a small touch-up. then head on out knowing your lips are looking lush, and they'll stay that way!

So... do you love a dark lip in the colder months? Do you have other tips and tricks to keep your lips looking lovely all day long? Let us know because sharing is caring!

I absolutely love a dark lip and it doesn’t matter what time of year it it’s! I definitely love the tip about exfoliating with a toothbrush it’s such a great idea!

I wish I could wear lipstick.....but it makes me look like a clown

I don't wear a dark lippy very often but I am hanging out for a decent red more with blue tones to compliment my fair skin tone because generally I just stick the dusky pink hues all year round.

I don't suit dark lipstick, always stick to a pink or peachy shade, goes better with my skin tone and I moisurise my lips before applying lipstick.

Love dark lips in the autumn/winter months. Never do the blotting thing, must remember to do that.

I am the dark lippy queen and was delighted when Black Cherry came back on the market. I wore that colour all through my teens and am rocking it again in my 40’s. A good lip balm is essential! My favourite is Hurraw because it’s not oily-too much oil equals colour bleeding and that’s not pretty. Revlon have a beautiful dark shade but I prefer Eye of Horus Velvet Lips. It does need reapplying after a few hours but it never bleeds and the colour is gorgeous! I never use primer or a lip liner. Keep it simple and keep it luscious.

Im very bad with prepping and priming... so i fail to find a lippy that does my lips proud. I usually moisturise my lips with a lip balm. If i wore any colour at all on my lips during winter, it will be dabbed lightly on top of my lip balm to create a tinted balm feel.

I don't take enough care. In winter I find it hard to be bothered and it's cold in my bedroom.

I do not have a lip primer. I hate colours that make my teeth look yellow.

Sometimes I use a matte lippy and tap it in then follow by a cream lippy in a similar colour. It helps to lock in the colour and your lips won't dry out.
