Fine Hair, Do Care? How To Thicken It Up!

Oh to be a lush locked lovely. To have hair that cascades down your back in a magical mane of gorgeousness. To not be blessed with a fine head of hair that doesn't so much cascade as straggle down the back. But are those with us who have fine hair doomed to a life of limp? Are there ways to transform fine hair from ho hum to Hollywood bombshell? Turns out there is hope!

(Important note: Fine hair due to genetics and thinning hair are different. If you find yourself experiencing hair thinning - which can be caused by hormones/stress/health issues - talk to a health professional.)

The Right Cut

As great as layers can be, they can also make fine hair look even finer, so if you're looking to create the illusion of thicker hair ask your stylist for minimal or - even better - no layers. A blunt cut is best!

Like to get your hair coloured? Multidimensional colour will make your hair look more lush than a single shade.

The Right Products

Too much product can weigh down your hair, making it look even limper. The key is to keep things simple, and that starts with using a shampoo and conditioner make specifically for fine hair. Look for the words 'volumising' or 'thickening'.

When it comes to styling products, the same applies. Look for the words 'volumising' and/or 'thickening', and don't be too heavy handed when using them.

Styling

Exurberant styling and using too much heat can cause your hair to break, which will make it look even finer, so keep styling to a minimum as much as possible.

When you do style your hair, one trick that is an oldie but a goodie when it comes to creating the illusion of thicker hair is to blowdry your hair upside down, which lifts the root and gives volume.

Another option? Teasing. Whenever I think of teasing my hair I'm confronted with an image of my mother's big, 80s hair. As terrifying as that is, she too has fine hair, and was able to create considerable heft with the use of a comb, so there really is something to be said for using the technique to get a little extra lift. Just be gentle. And know when to stop. More is not always more.

Of course, if you really want to rock a lush locked look, there's always extensions. If you can't make it there's nothing wrong with faking it!

So, my lovelies, do you live the fine life? Are you tempted to try any of the tips and tricks to create a fuller looking head of hair? Are there any other tips and tricks we need to know? Chat below!

I’m lucky enough to have thick hair which I love!

These tips really do help thanks so much !

I already have tried most of them sadly! Very true about the layering, haven't done that in about 10 years! I haven't had any success with volumising shampoos in the past but maybe I should try something new. The upside down blow-dry works for about half an hour then it looks flatter than normal and needs a brush!

Yes I have fine hair and the hair on my head grows slowly. Which is weird given hair every where else grows fast especially on my face - blame polycystic ovaries! Good to know about wearing Multidimensional colour. I like changing my hair colour frequently but I try not to use permanent now. I think in the past I've wanted to keep it long when I should of had a good chop because I can see in photos how frizzy the ends and damaged. I like a blunt cut. I got a fringe last time I went to the hair dresser I felt like my hair looked thinner

I have fine hair, and it is also very straight. The tip of blow drying the hair upside down definitely helps, however, for me the effect does not last very long. I haven't found anything yet that makes my hair look lusher, and that lasts. According to the hairdresser it would be easier if I cut my hair shorter, but I prefer longer hair.

I have always had fine hair and luckily also some curl and at the moment I’m embracing beach style waves with a sea salt spray. Straight away it looks like you’ve got more volume.
