Five Hair Habits You Need To Quit!

Wondering why your hair is looking a little lacklustre? Why you keep finding short sticky-outy bits all over your head? Or why your hair bobble has a ball of hair constantly round it? You could be unknowingly indulging in some naughty hair habits, all of which are surprisingly easy to break. Check these out…

Hands up if you have a habit of styling your hair when it’s wet. And by styling I mean twisting it up into a bun, before whacking on some slap and running out the door? Yep, me too. When hair is wet it’s super fragile and more likely to snap. Take a look at the hair caught around your bobble band – that’s not just hair that’s fallen out, it’s hair that’s been broken. Damaged hair. So what can you do? Let it dry naturally if possible – or get it to 90% dry then finish off with a blitz of your hairdryer on a cool setting before styling it. If doing all that in the morning isn’t possible, try doing it in the evening.

It’s not just doing your hair in a rush that can ruin your lush locks, it’s also doing the same old thing because it’s easy or because you’re uninspired. If your go to style is to throw it up in a topknot or in a ponytail in the exact same spot every single day you can end up causing your hair to break. Not so pretty when you do eventually decide to gussy it up and you find flyaways galore. Try and rotate your styles and the placement of them, even better attempt some hair down days.

So far so smug? You change your hairstyle around on a regular basis and never style your hair when it’s wet? But do you toss it up in a loose bun to go to bed? Hair Habit #3. Quit wearing your hair up when you go to bed. Set those follicles free! Once again wearing your hair up in bed causes stress on the hair and follicles. Bonus tip. Sleep on a silk pillowcase and you’ll wake up with smoother shinier hair (cotton sucks up moisture, I know, who knew!?), oh and you’ll wake up free of facial creases! Double bonus!

Do you get out of the shower, turban up your hair, and then once you’ve gone about your skincare ritual whip it out and give it a good rub? Stop both practices now! Twisting wet hair up into a knot? Well, you already know to be gentle with wet hair, so that’s immediately a naughty no-no. As for rubbing your locks furiously? It’s another cause of breakage, so instead blot your hair gently with a towel, before drying it off and styling.

Lastly, say your hair has seen better days and you want to get it back into tiptop condition, what’s a girl to do? Nourish it from the inside out. Eat foods that hair thrives on… salmon, eggs, oats, seeds, and nuts. If it contains protein, zinc, Vitamin A, or Omega 3 or 6, iron, Vitamin A, C and E and you’ll be rocking Rapunzel hair in no time.

So are you getting an A+ for hair health? Or are you guilty of treating your hair a teensy bit terribly? The beauty confessional is open!

I'm good for the most part but I do wrap my hair up after a shower.

Oh my goodness, I read this article and just cringed the whole time, I do these on a daily basis! Reading this opened my eyes and now I realize how much Ive been putting my hair through, I already washed my hair today and put it up into a bun as soon as I got out of the shower. Time to stop these habits and pull out the silky pillow case. Great article Tabatha :)

I will openly break several of these habits and now I will do so with full knowledge of being naughty. I think the only one I don't break is the bed one. Firstly though my hair is thick - there is a lot of it, and shoulder length, so you better believe that those microfibre turban things are my GOLD! people who don't have my hair, have no idea how long it takes to dry... I actually laughed at the "blot your hair gently" - after all I'm sure that streaky makeup from drips and wet shoulders, back and neck are much better results - hahaha! I guess it depends on what you mean by "style" your hair when it's wet. Generally after giving my hair a good rub with the microfibre, i gently gather the hair with my fingers are top messy bun it. even loosely I have to let my hair down when I get home from work, so it can be completely dry before bed. although while I do get a lot of falling out hair - I swear more than my 100 strands a day, I don't end up with hair on my hair tie.

I used to style my hair when it was wet. I don't anymore. I wash my hair at night and wait till the ends are damp before putting it in a really loose braid. I typically sleep with my hair in a loose braid even when I don't wash my hair. I used to wear the same hairstyle every day but now I try to braid my hair to a different side so it doesn't get pulled in the same spot all the time. The turban thing I do but I use a microfiber towel to absorb the most water out of my hair. And I definitely try to eat healthy as well.

Oh I am guiltyof so many of the hair crimes. Twisting with a towel when its wet and sometimes putting it in a turban to dry. Brushing it when its wet. And putting it in the bun everyday though I cant help that one because of my work.

I wear my hair the same way every day: in a pony tail. I don't have the luxury of choice though, it has to be tied up for work

9th June, 2016

I am a hard rub with the towel I must admit -My hair is so thick a blot just doesn't do it.

9th June, 2016

My eyes just grew bigger with every hair crime I committed in this article!!

9th June, 2016

I'm guilty of tying my hair up in a ponytail most days, just because it's easy and gets it out my face.

9th June, 2016

oops, I do most of these things! I so have to tie my hair up in a pony to sleep though, it's really long and when I just leave it loose I end up strangling myself.

9th June, 2016

guilty, guilty, guilty of all of them, I love my hair footloose and fancy free at bed time but the man....well.... all I hear is PFFFFFF.......PFFFFFFFF then I can feel my hair getting flung from behind me to in my face. yip now I use it as my weapon if we are grumpy as I know he hates it. and oooh silk pillows though I'm off to check those out right now.

I have lots of hair issues. It's much better since my illness is under control, but it still breaks easily and I get to throw a handful out the window every morning after brushing it! I do take lots of vitamins to try and help it, and I'll never dye it again. But I also put it in a pony tail when it's wet (I can't stand wet hair against my skin). I will invest in a silk pillowcase, that sounds like great advice :)

Guilty of a few of them for sure.

I used to be A+ but the last 6 months I've been distracted and high maintenance hair has been neglected badly. Number 1 crime is the same style day in day out.

8th June, 2016

I am so bad for them all! I have a buba who loves grabbing my hair. It is up 99.9% of the time, up wet, up in a ponytail daily, up when I go to bed. I have flyways, I've had a bald patch from wearing it up in one spot daily my hair has been in such poor condition because if it. :/

Incidentally my hair is the same colour as the fairy in my photo - I hope I have the patience to keep growing it until it gets that long!

I mostly say "OW!" when he lies on it and it tugs my head. Never thought about flicking it at him :). Silk pillows are nice! Been using them for years but Briscoes and Bed, Bath and Beyond usually have specials on them, wait till then.

I have the same problem Bex. But I still keep it loose in the bed. Never thought of it as a weapon though. Haha
