If you'd told my teenage self that I would have no issue dropping $70+ on a foundation she'd have been horrified, and quite possibly impressed. Horrified that I would waste valuable McDonald's money on an expensive foundation when a $13 jobby would do the trick, but impressed that when she grew up she could afford to do so...
These days I don't think twice about splashing the cash on a luxury foundation. I've tried many variously priced foundations over the years and apart from one drugstore foundation, which has since been discontinued, the foundations that work best on my 40+ skin - foundations that don't settle into my fine lines or emphasise my pores, foundations that cover my uneven skin tone and scarring - are all from luxury brands. And it would appear that I'm not the only person who loves a luxe foundation...

As I've got older I've spent more on foundations. Shade choice is also a big factor when spending more for me.
