Get Motivated This Winter With This Article!

Hands up if you like to hibernate during winter?

It’s so tempting, isn’t it, just to rug up in trackies and bed socks and old men cardigans and mooch about on the couch all day and all night until the seasons change and the sun starts to heat up and stay in the sky 'til past 6pm.

But alas, bills must be paid, children must be cared for, studies must be studied and things just need to get done. But where to find the motivation?

We went to BR Amelia – who is a weirdo winter lover - and grilled her for some tips and tricks on how we can feel motivated about doing anything (that isn’t sitting on the couch and watching tele) in winter.

Start the day off with a cold shower. Not the whole shower, but at the end, give yourself a quick squirt of the cold stuff, not only will it be great for your skin and your hair, but it gives you a thrill and gets you moving.

Do exercise. Don’t skive off; don’t promise yourself you’ll do it later. Whether it’s a brisk walk outside or an hour in the gym, get out there or in there and get those endorphins going, and imagine how fab you’ll look in your spring and summer clothing while everyone is racing to catch up.

Embrace it. There is no point in spending one quarter of your life miserable because it’s not your favourite time of year. Turn that attitude around and make it a time you love. As the leaves fall go and kick them in the air, find joy in your winter wardrobe and turn yourself into a fashion plate, hunt out ice puddles and crack them open with a stick or a high heel!

Food. Winter’s a great time to learn to cook. In winter you don’t feel like you’re slaving over a hot stove, you feel like you’re warming up next to a hot stove while creating delicious hearty hot stews, soul-warming soups and delectable self-saucing desserts ... um, you can see why you shouldn’t stop exercising during winter, right?

Be grateful. You’re seeing the world change around you, and that’s a magical thing! As summer settles to sleep, nature slows down and takes a breath, ready to spring into life again in a few months time. It’s beautiful, and we get to be part of it! Sure we can’t hibernate like some animals, (BR Kellie here - Wasps! Wasps hibernate!! And who wants to be a wasp!? Can you tell I dislike wasps?) but we can take moments to slow down and enjoy this quieter time of year. Long walks in a park, late nights talking with our nearest and dearest in front of a roaring fire – or heater. Long pot luck lunches with friends around your dining room table, laughing, talking, sharing, loving ….

Ahhhh BR Amelia. You are a breath of wintry fresh air. Do you find it easy to stay motivated during winter? Share your tips with the rest of us!

I'm learning to be more mindful. My tool for winter especially is to think "Can I change this situation?". If the answer is no, there is no point in worrying about it, for example if it's raining! And if I can change it then I do. I agree the exercise is key because it gives you that emotional lift and then you can treat yourself with warm winter delicacies after that!

I do like hibernating during winter but with 3 young ones it's impossible I mean my 12 year old wouldn't mind if we stayed home all day and didn't get 9ut of bed until night time. It's impossible to do with young people and being the only adult so tough when you want and need just a sleep in grrrrr lol.... but it's not so bad because I'm such recluse I'd sleep till winter ended. So although my want is to stay inside in bed my reality is I can't lol

I really love the chilly cold refreshing mornings that come with a frost. So clear and crisp, and usually a gorgeous blue sky. Best way to start my day.

If only it were that easy lol. I am needing to get back in to exercise but the rain puts me off going for my walk and now with holidays my son dislikes walking long distances like I do. I love the cold as apposed to the heat but getting wet isnt my idea of a good time. Spring would be good right now. What is also a baaaad thing for my lack of motivation to do exercise is my need for comfort food in the cold nights. Bacon Hock soup and fresh buns yes please!! But alas straight through the lips and down to my hips eeekkk

I exercise year round. For me I think about aspects of my day that I like, using my skincare or doing my makeup. A cute set of workout clothes encourages me to get out of bed and put them on. I do agree it is easier to cook during winter than in summer.

Hahaahah nope, sorry I'm in sloth mode. :P I love sloth mode.

I'm a winter wowser. I absolutely hate it and wish for the warm temperatures, sunshine and dryness of summertime the whole time. I do exercise, and make comfort food throughout winter, but I'm hoping that one day I'm rich enough to only ever spend Summer in NZ and another summer in another country when it's winter here. All year round summer would be awesome.

I have been so lately the exact reason being winter! oh and it being study break haha. I am in my sweat pants and dressing gown while reading this and have been glued to Netflix all day. Can't help it, university starts back up on Monday and things will get hectic! :(

I love slow cooked meals in the winter. Love sitting in front of the crackling fire :)

I totally needed this - good motivation to get on the cross-trainer (I was trying to use the 'it's too cold' excuse)

Are you serious? I love winter! Coats and boots and scarves . . . snuggling up in front of the fire . . . dramatic dark lipstick and pale skin . . . and oh, boy - that feeling of sliding between flannelette sheets which are all crisp and warm from the electric blanket. Summer has it's pleasures, but winter makes you feel alive!

Nice one BR Amelia! I reckon it's something you canny do nought about, so just get on with it!!

There are always positives to all seasons :)

I've always loved winter, so much so that both my OE's started off in the late Northern Autumn! Getting out in the brisk air blasting my face, wind whipping in my hair, makes me feel alive! My dog has taught me that even if its cold and pouring with rain, going out for a walk, crunching on dry leaves, feeling the rain drops on my body, is a feeling worthy of a tail wag. So is the joy of snuggling on the sofa under a blankie with him after haha.
