Glow On – Give It A Glow!

When do you know a makeup trend is hot? When you’re in the middle of writing about it and one of our amazing members posts a picture to the Photo Wall of exactly what you’re writing about. What trend am I talking about? The Full-Face Highlighter Challenge.

It initially came to my attention when I saw that Nikki Tutorials had done a look using nothing but highlighters. The result? Well, while it’s not a look I’d wear out grocery shopping, it’s strangely alluring. All that shine, all that sheen… 

Turns out though, the look was initially just a bit of fun from YouTuber Mariya.

Then the beauty vlogging world saw it, loved it and decided to turn it from a simple ‘creating a look using highlighters for fun’ into a full on challenge. And what a challenge it is!

Look at this super glam look from Nikkie Tutorials - she’s so shiny with a gorgeous Grecian goddess look going on.

Jeffree Star also jumped on board with a look that reminds me of a Barbie frolicking underneath the glow of a full moon.

And if you head to YouTube and search ‘Full Face Highlighter Challenge’ you’ll find hours of other YouTuber's take on this fabulous pass the sunglasses trend.

But our favourite look? It has to be from one of our members, our very own Glowing Goddess – Koni.

Seriously, how amazing does she look? I know this challenge is meant to be a bit of fun, a look you wouldn’t generally wear outside of the home or a dress-up party, but we think she could rock this look anytime, anywhere. Of course, it wasn’t enough just to sit and admire her artfulness, we had to ask her about her experience of the challenge, and bless her gorgeous cotton socks, she agreed to an interview.

BR:  What inspired you to give the full face highlighter challenge a go?
Koni:  I love a radiant glow and I’ve always wanted to put my highlighters to good use so after watching Mariya’s tutorial I decided to try it on one side of my face.  Aside from finding out that my “good” skin has been lying to me, I also found that the BR Forum was buzzing about the full face highlighter challenge so I thought it only fair to take one for the team and become a human glow stick for a moment in time. 

BR:  What products did you use on each part of your face?
Koni:

1. Base – Becca Backlight Priming Filter mixed with Natasha Denona Body Glow in Medium
2. Concealer – Benefit Watts Up
3. Setting Powder – Makeup Revolution Highlight Palette
4. Foundation / Contour / Eyeshadow – Carli Bybel palette – all 4 highlighters
5. Bronzer / Decolletage – Natasha Denona All Over Glow Face + Body Shimmer Powder in Medium
6. Blush – Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze & Glow (Highlight)
7. Highlighter – JD Glow Cosmetics Beyonce
8. Setting Spray – Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

BR: Did you take your new look for a walkabout or did you wash it off post-pictures?
Koni: My house is next to a playcentre and the last thing I wanted to do was scare the children so after enduring some family banter of comparing my face to sparkly sequins, off it came.

BR: Were any of your favourite highlighters used in the challenge? If so, which ones and was it hard to use them for a look that (possibly) wasn't going to be seen in public.
Koni: I used two of my favourite highlighters – Benefit’s Watts Up and Natasha Denona’s All Over Glow Face + Body Shimmer Powder.  I didn’t flinch, whether it's a favourite or not, I buy makeup to wear for my enjoyment and if that’s just to sashay into the kitchen, then sashay I will.

BR: What are your thoughts on the full face highlighter challenge?
Koni: I don't believe I've ever enjoyed makeup application as much as I did when covering my face with highlighters, it was ridiculously fun! It's a fantastic challenge because it’s a great reminder that makeup is supposed to be fun and is essentially your own slice of happiness whatever way you want to wear it.
