Hair SOS? Head to Your Kitchen!

Article by BR Kellie

Your blonde hair’s gone green.

Your lush locks look like a rat’s nest.

Your hair is as flat as old lemonade.

Or maybe it’s about as dull as watching paint dry?

What’s a girl to do? Head to the kitchen for some quick fixes!

Your pantry and the fridge are filled with ingredients that can help fix those scary hairy moments.

If your blonde hair has been attacked by chlorine and gone Grinch green, reach for your trusty tomato sauce. Sounds crazy I know, but the red from the tomatoes works to counteract the green in your hair. Simply wash your hair as normal, then dump a whole lot of tomato sauce through it, wait five minutes, then rinse. If that doesn’t quite cut the mustard try a tomato sauce mask by massaging loads of sauce through your hair, wrapping it in cling wrap and waiting 30 minutes before rinsing out.

Another sweet tip for keeping brassiness out of blonde hair is to search out Grape Koolaid (you can get it online at UnitedSweets.co.nz). Mix a little bit of it in with your conditioner, then condition as usual. The result? A brighter shade of blonde.

If product overload has left your hair lank and lifeless reach for apple cider vinegar. The acid in the vinegar works to cleanse the buildup – and it’s super easy to use. Simply take it into the shower with you (or keep a bottle in there if you regularly use product), massage one or two tablespoons through wet hair then shampoo and condition.

Does running your hand through your hair feel like running your hand over a well loved sheepskin rug? Olive oil is your friend. Massage it into your scalp and down your lengths, grab the cling wrap or a warm towel and let it infuse your tresses with its goodness for a good half hour before rinsing it out to reveal softer silkier hair.

Has your hair become about as exciting as ringing a government department? Take the dullness out with a yoghurt mask. Dive into your fridge for some plain yoghurt, massage it into dry hair, cling wrap it to avoid any drips around the house, then after around 30 minutes hop into the shower and rinse it out with shampoo. This mask can also be made extra good by beating in an egg.

So are you a fan of raiding your kitchen for hair emergencies? Why not share your tips and tricks!

Well I didn't know that about Tomato sauce! I knew tomato juice can rid you of odour (Americans tell of bathing in it after a skunk attack)... there is something for the memory banks :)

The olive oil tip sounds good - I normally buy organic olive oil too so gotta be good for the locks!! I might have to try the yoghurt mask though - intriguing :)

Cool tips. I've head of the tomato sauce trick, even though I don't have blonde hair. Coconut oil also works like olive oil

I did the tomato sauce trick a few years ago and the smell stayed in my hair for days after it was horrendous even after shampooing and conditioning! and I can't even remember if it worked or not because I was so fixed on the smell

Yet another great use for apple cider vinegar, fabulous.

I heard honey and lemon juice can give you some pretty nice highlights, just spray it on and leave for about half an hour then wash it off. I've yet to try this but has anyone else ever tried?

As I type I have olive oil in my hair and a new fancy glad wrap hat. I will report back on how lovely it makes my hair. I just looked up and some people had come to the front door. I'm crouching down behind the kitchen bench making hubby open the door and deal with them because I didn't want them to see my fancy new hat hahaha!

Nooooo I just cleaned out the fridge of half a tub of natural yogurt that was involved in an incident with a really big bunch of celery ?! Don't ask! But It would have been fine for a hair mask! Cry, cry.

My hair feels a bit nicer but didn't much reduce to straw like consistency of it. I think I need to seriously take care of it :/
