Have you ever 'faked' a product?

Poll posted by BR Natalie

If there's one thing our Save or Splurge feature proves - it's that there is most definitely elitism within our treasured industry.

Let's say the average lipstick costs around $20.  Well head into the local Dollar Store and you can probably find a pretty decent Jordana lipstick for a couple of dollars.  And of course you could head to you local MAC counter, or even local NZ company and pick up a lipstick for $40.  And if your budget stretches even further, well you could pay upwards of $80 for something like the nifty Guerlain lipstick.

But how much weight do we put on brand names?  And does brand importance encourage us to fake it?

Here's just some of the ways one could 'fake' a beauty product.

  • If someone asked the brand of your lipstick, would you proudly say "Jordana", would you 'forget' where you bought it from, or would you outright lie and say "Karen Murrell"?
  • Have you ever knowingly bought a fake product, just so you could say you owned Mac?  Or Chanel?  Or Dior?
  • Have you ever depotted a product into the empty of a more expensive product?

Oh yes, the Beauty Confessional is once again open, and we want to know...have you ever faked a beauty product?

And if you're feeling brave - tell us what and how below!

I don't see why you would need to lie about what product you use. I'm definatly with Kirsty on this , it shows a lot of talent if your able to make your make up look AMAZING with cheep products. Plus it just shows that some cheep products can be just bad amazing as the expensive ones. It may make you feel good that you are able to buy the expensive brands but its not the end of the world if you cant

If a product looks good, why fib about it, unless you are a hopeless snob.

Oh my goodness! Repotting is such a sneaky idea! I love it. I do keep the little sample shampoo and conditioner bottles and refil with whatever for travel.

I've never faked a product because I love to talk about my bargains! Haha. If someone loves my lippy then I have to let them know what a steal it was! Haha. As a student, I get pretty amped if I can get a look for less. But maybe if I did own something a little special I would try and drop it into conversation due to my excitement. Haha.

Nope, never have faked a product - I really don't care what brand it is or if people judge me for that!

Hahahahah no. I can't afford the stuff I'm faking! Although I have heard that the Bossy Lux face spray stuff is supposed to be better than Mac soooo... Does that count? ;-)

I'd never thought about faking products Before! If someone I'd compliment me on a cheap product I'd feel happy as to tell them how cheap it was and where they could get it from! I haven't deported anything either but it's a good idea. I mean, if it makes you feel better than why Not?

Nope I was wearing Miki eyeshadow recently and a girl asked what I was wearing. I was delighted to tell her that for $5 she could create the same look.

I didn't even realise this was a 'thing'.

I have never purchased a fake product or depotted a product into expensive packaging. But I must admit that I am almost guilty of number one. A lady I used to work with always wears high end products like Mac and Nars. She once complimented me on my lipstick saying she wanted to find one similar. I just said thank you but didn't tell her it was my $4 Jordana lippy. However, interestingly enough a friend complimented me on another lippy I was wearing, who wears a mixture of drugstore and higher brands it I've never see on her wear "dollar store" brands, and I proudly told her it was a Jordana lippy. I guess I was more comfortable telling my friend my lipstick was Jordana as I knew she would never judge me.

Never thought to do fake a real one. I have wanted dupes, but never thought about faking it before. I love telling someone it was a cheap lipstick, if it was. I'm not ashamed to tell someone if it was cheap or high end.

Honestly, it never even occurred to me to "fake" it! I've never done it, and don't plan to start either.

I haven't bought fake to my knowledge. I just can't fathom it. I either go without or pay highend. I do admit I love bought dupes though unknowingly at the time of highend names I use to think Revlon were highend and loreal I mean I knew about Elizabeth Arden, Clinque , Bobbi Brown for example but yeah. Fake nah cheaper just as good stuff yeah but I wouldn't hide the fact. We see so many dupes thst give great quality performance anyways. For me I get asked because I'm single mum are those real or fake eg my sunglasses & I'm disgusted at these questions. I never buy fake glasses, clothes or makeup. To my knowledge. I will buy brands on sale though. I have rich friends who buy fake and don't understand why? I can't weat junk jewelry either my skin reacts. A friend gave me a LV wallet expecting me to not know the difference and saying it was real. I was so offended I have two LV handbags & know fake from real on first glance. The total cheek. But the point of this poll would I buy fake makeup nope would I buy cheap makeup non branded yip would I fake it and saysm it's highend nope what's the worth? Why not share the love of a good quality brand at a cheaper price then fake it. You only ruin ur own image by faking lmao

2nd August, 2015

I wouldn't do that... I believe credit where credit is due. If I saw something amazing on someone else I would hope they would be honest.

2nd August, 2015

I'm such a bad liar I couldn't pull off pretending something wasn't a fake anyway. I don't see the point of pretending an item is something else, I'd rather just tell the truth and admit it's a dupe or a fancy one and if someone wants to judge me on my choice, then it's their problem, not mine. If I'm wearing it, I obviously like it ;)
