Applying foundation is a tricky task.  It really is a skill that you learn through trial and error.  Brush, wedge, sponge, your fingers - each tool has it's pros and cons, and each tool works differently depending on the format of foundation.

In our article Foundation Tools we recommend that whatever method you use to apply a liquid or cream foundation, you first deposit the product on the back of your hand before using the tool of your choice to apply it from there.  It's a tried and tested method, ensuring you don't use too much product or contaminate your foundation.  It is, however, a little messy, and not something you want to be doing at your desk or in the car for a quick touch up.

Which is just one of the benefits of using a stick foundation.  You can literally apply it straight to your face, whether you choose to dab it or stripe it before blending with your chosen tool. They're also great for experimenting with highlighting and contouring and the handy stick form means no more disaster foundation spills in your bag!

We've teamed up with Maybelline to bring you a brilliant trial opportunity.  We're looking for 20 members to put their Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation to the test.  This foundation is the first of its kind, a lightweight gel stick foundation with an anti-shine powder core.  What's great about this product is that it's aimed at oily/combination skin and the stick format means there's no need to spread oils from your fingertips to your face.

How easy do you find it to apply foundation? Does the method application affect your purchase decision?  Have you used a 'stick foundation' before, if so how did you find it?  And if you haven't used a stick foundation before, tell us, is it something you'd like to try?

I've used a stick foundation for years and absolutely love it. Great coverage and lasts all day

1st June, 2014

I really want to try this! I think it sounds like it will definitely suit my skin type, take away the strange look liquid leaves me. Yes please!

1st June, 2014

I have only used mineral and liquid foundation before and pretty much just use liquid or BB if I don't want such full coverage. When I apply my liquid foundation I use my beauty blender and fingers and get a nice even finish with ease.

I haven't used stick foundation before. In fact I had never heard of it u till you guys put this up on the BR page.

It sounds very interesting and I would love to try it out and do a review!

I used to swear by powders only. I recently got a mac stick foundation snd I do like the convenience but I find the cover isn't as even and long lasting. sometimes it's quite shiny too. maybe I'm applying it wrong!? would love to compare it to another!

I have gone off foundation because it is often too messy to apply. I hate powders because they go everywhere, and I hate liquids because they give an oily appearance. I would love to try out the stick to see if this makes application and appearance better! I like the idea of two shades in one to get a good match too.

I have never used a stick foundation. Been a bit anxious about how well it will go on and what sort of coverage I will get. I like the idea of it though.

I've tried the l'Oreal one, ages ago... I liked how easy it was, but a few hours in to wearing it there was a real 'chalky' feel to it. I'd love to give this one a go, I want to try the contouring I've been reading about...

1st June, 2014

Love all the previous fit me products would so love to get my hands on these and give them a go!! Looks like the perfect product for contouring and highlighting so would love to give this a try! Is definitely a must in my beauty collection!

Sounds awesome. Don't know why I haven't tried a stick foundation before as it would be great time saver as a busy mum to get made up quickly in the morning. Will have to read all the reviews that come in.

I've tried both a bobbi brown and MAC foundation sticks before. Would be great to see how this one compares as I really like the Maybelline Fit liquid foundation. Love the idea of the anti-shine powder core!

I've never used a foundation stick before. To be honest, I've never even seen foundation in a stick form before, only concealer. I usually apply my foundation on with fingers because I'm lazy (whoops!), but I've recently bought some face brushes which I plan on using more often as I've heard brushes give a more even finish. I'd love to try this Maybelline Fit Me foundation stick because it looks like its really easy to use and makes it a lot easier and faster to apply foundation. I also love how it has an anti shine powder core and is also lightweight, perfect for my combination oily skin!

Many many years ago I used a covergirl one. Keen to see what this is like though!

30th May, 2014

No I've never tried a stock foundation sounds so exciting I have oily skin so be interesting if it works on my skin I love the idea of using my hand one least brush to clean.

I usually apply my foundation using my flat top brush or beauty blender

Would love to give it a try

Never tried stick foundation before, however, I'd love to try it. It seems like a much cleaner and efficient way to apply foundation - especially on those early mornings when you're barely awake and liquid just goes everywhere, as right now I just pump it onto my hands and dab it on my face. However, I do have quite oily/combination skin (oily around the T zone and dry patches elsewhere) so would be interested in seeing if it would actually last a long time, and whether or not I'd get shiny with it throughout the day. The contouring idea with 2 shades is really good though! Would probably make the process much faster.
