I know I bemoan my hair a lot around here. It is my least favourite feature and I have done and will continue to do everything I can to change that. Last year I was lucky enough to trial and fall in love with KMS' Tame Frizz regime, which does the most marvellous job of taking my fine but-lots-of-it semi-wavy semi-curly hair and turning it into this lush gentle wave of locks. BUT... even my beloved Tame Frizz can only do so much. It can handle winter humidity with ease, but this summer? Oh my giddy aunt. It's hotter than Keanu Reeves in Point Break. Or John Wick. It's been a summer where my brown halo has gone into overdrive. A summer to break out the big hair-styling guns. So what are our top tips for fighting the frizz when the mercury is sky-high and you feel like you're stepping out into a warm bath on the daily? Check these out.

First... yup... get a good shampoo, conditioner and hairstyling product. And as you know, I think KMS is the bizz. The shampoo and conditioner leave my hair feeling incredible, and work perfectly with the smoothing lotion - which you can use before styling if you're wanting to fancy up your hair, OR you can work it through and leave it to air dry. Either way, you're one step ahead when it comes to putting out the frizz fire.

Rubbing the heck out of your hair with a towel when drying it? Don't. It roughens up the hair follicle and can cause a case of the frizzies. Instead gently squeeze the water out, kind of like the way you might use a hand towel to squeeze excess water out of a blending sponge. One way to get excess water out of your hair with ease is to invest in a microfibre hair towel, like the one above, which is available from Acquisitions

Cut back on shampooing your hair. This is hard for me to write, as I've been, up until recently, a daily shampooer for most of my adult life. But rigorous shampooing can cause breakage and damage, which leads to the boof. Instead stretch out the days between shampooing with a little dry shampoo.

An oil can work wonders on your hair when it comes to keeping things looking smooth, and argan oil is universally loved by hair both thick and thin. Take a drop or two, warm it between our palms, then smooth it on, letting it seal the cuticle... then enjoy smoother, shinier hair.

Give it a squirt of hairspray. A little hairspray on a clean mascara wand of a teasing brush can smooth down the flyaways that form around your forehead. Some say it's best to look for an alcohol-free formula so that your hair isn't further dried out. Others say that's a big marketing ploy and by the time the alcohol reaches your head it has dissipated. Others say some alcohols in hairspray are fine, some aren't. Being a dirty old fence sitter - and a believer in experiementing and finding out what works for you - I say you be the judge!

Of course one way to ease the time spent styling is to wear your hair up. A bun is easy, fast and can be rocked in casual or chic styles. Or you can braid the front of your hair and pin it back into a pony or bun. Either way it can contain the majority of the frizz and you just have to work to calm the farm on your hairline area.

Another tip I've learned - the hard way - is that there's no point fighting the hair you were born with on a humid day. I can straighten the bejeesus out of it and if there's water in the air - especially during summer - I'll be facing a hot mess an hour or so. So if your hair is curly, embrace the curls when the hygrometer is high, but work with them to keep them looking fab not frizzy.

The very last option - and possibly the easiest if you've nowhere to be in a hurry? Go with it. It's summer. We live in New Zealand. The place is awash with mismatched tan lines, jandals, burnt noses (naughty!) - so what's a bit of frizz among friends?

So my beauties? Are you a frizzy fairy like yours truly? What are your tips and tricks for keeping the curlies and wavies from springing up like hands in the air at an outdoor summer's concert? You know the drill... sharing is caring!

I am so in love with the Tony and Guy dry shampoo! It's the best dry shampoo I've ever used and I couldn't get by without it now. I'm lucky and have pretty tame, straight hair, but in this heat the only way I can survive is by having it up in a bun, I have to have it all off my face and neck!

Love the hask oil. Thankfully my hair does not go to bad now in the heat. Once I use my ghd it stays beautiful until the next wash. Best investment ever.

26th January, 2018

This summer is definitely a frizzer. I tend to spray my hair back into place.

26th January, 2018

Im so going to try kms tame frizz My hair is so fluffy and frizzy when it's humid drives me mad I have so many holiday pictures with my hair pulled back and oiled down looks horrid but better than frizzy

26th January, 2018

I am over the heat and trying to do stuff with my hair so I got it cut super short, so much easier, I dont even need my hair dryer in the mornings!

26th January, 2018

I love my microfibre hair towels. I have two, so when one's in the wash, the other's ready to use. They're also great to take on holiday as they hardly take up any space.

My hair is wavy curly, thick and long and has been diabolical this summer. The fly aways are driving me nuts. I had a decent trim/cut and thinning at the start of the summer and it has helping a bit but is still heavy a f. Brushing my hair at all is an absolute NO NO. Though I have noticed i have not been washing it as much this season, once or twice a week with the Tony dry shampoo inbetween. When it has been to hot, I have just been wetting my hair in the shower with no product and then putting some Schwarzkopf Beology repair oil serum in while still wet/ It helps with the curls, then putting it in a bun. I have had some nice messy hair bun days.

26th January, 2018

I don't get too much frizz which is great considering I have thick hair. I have been using microfibre hair towels for years now and have about 3 of them as I use them on my little girl. Which reminds me I need to pick up a couple of new ones as the elastic has broken on two of the ones I have. I also use a BB Leave In Hair Conditioner to tame any fly aways that I may have. It has been amazing.

I have a cross between wavy and curly hair which I can usually manage....except those darn fly-aways! They're always an issue I have to consider, ESPECIALLY in the humidity. I had started using an Argan oil product but then realized that the silicon in it was making all the curls that I actually like go limp...

Anyone have suggestions of anti-frizz products without silicon in them? I wonder whether any made it on this list.

26th January, 2018

Argan oil is a must for me - on wet hair, or just to finish a style before heading out. On weekends I use Ton i& Guy sea salt spray and embrace the crazy curls.... I should get a microfibre towel - need a trip to Kmart.

26th January, 2018

I have very thick straight hair that doesn't frizz however in this heat it feels like a blanket on top of my head.

25th January, 2018

I absolutely swear by my microfiber hair wrap ($3 from Kmart!), Hask argan oil which is smoothing but also smells delicious, and Bumble&bumble; dry shampoo. B&B products are VERY expensive, but I've had so many disappointing dry shampoo trials that I am happy to pay a high price for a good product. I would be interested to try the Toni & Guy dry shampoo though.

25th January, 2018

I so wish I had even a hint of a curl or a wisp but alas I have straight hair, so straight it looks straightened. It is thick and fine and hangs, no springing here. In the past I paid huge amounts of money to have curls, think spiral perms, which never worked, Good product is essential for any hair though, Hask is a great brand, I use the coconut oil hair mask - fabulous for dry hair.

25th January, 2018

Oh yes yes yes it's a pain! I'm contemplating a very very short haircut to remove the problem! it's either that or tough it out until it can be pulled into a tight ponytail. I forgot how painful this is with short hair when I decided to get it cut after a few years of growing it. Doh!!

25th January, 2018

Yes it is so friken hot up here in Northland! I definitely need a micro fibre towel, I always rub my hair dry with a towel. Never heard of a micro fibre towel lol

If you were wanting a silicon-free option check out Living Proof Satin Hair Serum. I've never used it, but apparently it's silicon and oil free. (And yes, now I want to try it... )

They're great for keeping your hair out of your way until its dry enough to be loose, and they're really really light.

Definitely worth purchasing! You can get them really cheap these days. Try Kmart or the warehouse, or even dollar stores!

Oh my goodness yes, this heat here in Northland is unbearable at times. We are in Whangarei and it has been muggy as heck lol. You definitely need a microfibre towel in your life. I just buy Kmart ones, they are perfect and cheap.

I got my microfibre towel from kmart and it works wonders. Would not be without now, so easy to use and keeps your hair out of your face.

Yeah a tight pony tail and lots of oil pulled back hard not only sticks fluffy hair down it sort of does a mini facelift x

Silvene
26th January, 2018

Me too, although mine is stick straight, fine and thin. No curls, no frizz, but I can't really do anything with it either as it's so fine it falls out of an up-do within half an hour, unless there's like a whole can of hairspray on it.

I hadn't heard of Micro fibre hair wrap -sounds really good -I don't like the feel of dry shampoos and have given up on them as I find my scalp gets itchy and my hair feels dirty with them.

I'm using the Tony dry shampoo through the summer and it has been great. Easy to use, no residue and is not heavy like some other dry shampoo's that I ahve used in the past.

MareeB
26th January, 2018

Oh it's so tempting Kim. It's pretty annoying the way it is!

I reckon Fi. I was looking at Bella Hadid's and what they do to hers - super sleek and shiny and it must be pretty humid in LA!
