How much does your man look after himself?

Article by BR Natalie

As First Lady of Beauty Review it probably won't surprise you that I have lotions and potions scattered across the house.  I have many a cupboard full of beauty products and I have a set skincare and haircare routine.  I also live with a man who considers soap and deodorant the only acceptable beauty products for men.  And heaven forbid he run out of soap and have to use one that isn't blue or use a deodorant that doesn't smell like Lynx Africa.

Yes, when it comes to beauty The Husband still has two feet firmly in the cave.  He's not even peeking outside to take a look at what's happening in the men's care aisle.

Oh, but if he did, what a wonderful sight would befall him!  No longer do men have to scurry along to a teeny shelf and hurriedly pop a moisturiser or cleanser into the trolley.  They don't have to secretly use our products (and for some reason gravitate to using our most treasured ones).  Male beauty products have gone from the 'metro' label, to just 'men's stuff'.  And most men seem to be embracing at least some part of it.

BR founder Merilyn was General Manager of Beiersdorf NZ and when they launched NIVEA for Men back in 2001, men were horrified at the thought of beauty products for them.  And now look how far we've come.  From outdoorsy man using lipbalm to the more mature men targeting his wrinkles (which always look better on them anyway), just like women, there are products to suit every man's needs.  And almost every brand worth it's salt now has a men's care range.

And as BR Zoe will attest - it's not just beauty products that more men are embracing.  She treats more and more men for hair removal every week.  She shapes eyebrows on, gives mani-pedis to and spray tans men regularly.  There are even beauty salons popping up soley for the males, with the back, sack and crack topping the list.

So - what kind of menfolk do you have in your life?  Are they well kempt and no stranger to looking after themselves with their own products?  Or do they just pilfer from your stash on the d-low? Or, like The Husband do they resist all and any attempt at getting them to take better care of their skin?

Mine is quite good at wanting me to pluck his eyebrows and find his blackheads (he just likes the attention I think) but he works with cars any spare time he has and works on building sites during the day. This man is filthy. His skin is several shades darker than it should be and the only way we've discovered how to get it off is using a toothbrush on his skin. Oh dear.

My man is not into any skin care routine at all so "man grooming" is just not his thing. He could do with some eyebrow tweezing though and I have casually reminded him lol.He does have great skin for a man of 50 plus and no one ever believes his age and he has never used anything on his skin and is always in the sun...hmmmmm

It is a hard push to get hubby to use anything other than an old fashioned bar of soap, even free samples are a hard sell. So I don't think with him it is so much of a cost thing but more of a macho attitude of men don't look after their skin!? I don't agree of course so here is the eternal debate of but you could use a {insert really good product here}, his reply... 'No!' (grrr) lol

MalloMr likes to take care of his skin. He has scrubs and creams for his face, uses my serum in his hair & beard & is always happy to try new products for men. He was lucky to get the ZA men scrub & moisturiser on trial from BR & he was pretty excited about it.

As a new to the whole "relationship" thing again... my new man I was pleased to discover has a range of products in his bathroom cupboard.... yeh I looked. But I did buy him face sunblock because he has been burnt so much this summer.... gotta look after that money maker (ok I lied his face doesn't make the money but hey it sounded good)

He used to care but not anymore

I try to get hubby to try things, but he gives it a brief go and then forgets. It took us a long time to get to that stage, so I'll give the nagging a brief rest and then start laying them out in order of use for him LOL

Mine does nothing, as much as I try and I beg he does nothing.

My partner wouldn't ever touch the stuff. He only uses shaving cream on his face and hot water. He also loves shower gels which I have never been a fan of but I love my bars of soap. I have caught him once using moisturiser but that was only because he was chafing. Other than that he is the way men should be, well that's what he thinks. I would love for him to have a silky smooth face.

My guy doesn't like or use skincare at all. HOWEVER he tried the Za Mens Skincare Cleanser/Scrub and loved it, even asked me to purchase it for him!!!

My boy is absolutely obsessed with moisturizers and different cleaners and everything. He'll even occasionally do a face mask with me, and has taken to instead of me wanting to pluck his eyebrows, he ASKS me to wax them for him!

Mine loves a good cleanser and moisturiser. Seriously good. His skin doesn't react well to supermarket brands, and his cleansers often cost the same or more than mine (as in more than $20). He's quite lucky too, as often when a fancy moisturiser doesn't work for me it'll work for him - so he gets the 'spensive castoffs. Lucky bloke.
