We all know coloured hair requires maintenance.  Blonde hair is notorious for needing regular touch ups, lest you want to rock the dark root stripe.  All of those bright colours that are in fashion? They require regular maintenance to ensure they stay vibrant and bright.  Any hairdresser worth their (very expensive) scissors will ask you if you've considered the maintenance of the new colour you want.

If you're paying salon prices for your hair, chances are you try to space out your colouring appointments as far as you can to minimise the cost of the upkeep.  You might even head to the salon for the big change and maintain your roots at home?

And then there are the regular at-home colourers. There are those that use colour at home cautiously, only reapplying every few months or so. And then there are the 'really-regular' DIYers.  These are the ones who automatically stock up when their colour kit of choice is on special or don't think twice about slapping on a fresh coat when they find themselves with a spare hour or two. Your really-regular at-home colourer doesn't fear disasters, they don't worry about following the instructions - colouring their hair is a automatic as washing it.

We've teamed up with Garnier to bring one trial team the chance to test Olia, their first oil powered, ammonia free home colour formula to the test.

Garnier Olia uses the power of oil to achieve rich, vibrant colour while improving your hair quality.  Olia’s Oil Delivery System (ODS) technology allows for permanent hair colour and the replacement of ammonia with an odourless agent. Oil propels the colour deep inside the hair providing maximum colour performance, visible improvement of hair quality and a new experience for the senses.

Each member of this trial team will be able choose which of the 18 shades they'd like to trial, so be sure to check the range out in store just in case!

I've been colouring my own hair since I was a teen.. I think I have been every shade under the sun! Every time I have had my hair coloured professionally I've been disappointed with the results, so I just stick to doing it myself now.

Usually my hair requires about 3 packs of dye, because it is so thick and long - the upside is its quite easy to hide any mistakes quite easily. The only colour I stay away from now is black, as if I change my mind (and I do frequently) its a hard colour to come back from..especially being a natural redhead!!

I love dying my hair, and with the current trends of bright colour I'm really enjoying being experimental and creative. It also seems like the worse it could end up, the more I enjoy it! I haven't had any catastrophic mistakes lately, but I think thats because I made them all when I was younger.. theres only been a few occasions that a hat and a drive to get some more dye couldn't fix.

The only colour I've never been able to achieve is blonde. Its always ended up morange, and that includes quite a few visits to different hairdressers! I can only guess it must be something to do with being a redhead..

I love dying my hair at home, Ive been doing it for about 9 years! I feel that I'm a pro at home hair dying. I love trying out new colors and new brands. I do it quite frequently, however I am need to dye my hair again..soon. I'm now leaning towards hair dyes with no ammonia in them, so It doesn't react with my allergies.

I've always coloured my hair at home, for around 17 years (gosh i feel old) I felt like hairdressers, would do what they wanted. If I stuffed up my hair it was my fault.

Also the cost for me to have my hair coloured at a salon would hundreds of dollars. I do not have that sorta cash.

I've been at home colouring my hair for over 15 years now - I had it done at a salon a few times but just couldn't justify the price considering I dye my hair black and I'm pretty sure no one can mess up black dye!

I colour my hair regularly every 4 weeks roughly. For years I have used a ammonia based product so when I came across the Olia brand I thought I would give it a go. Must admit I am impressed. NO horrible smell, just a nice fragrance, goes on easily and leaves my hair soft, with natural looking colour. I am sold and at a price I can afford I will be buying this from now on.

At home pro!! Anything from a full colour to blocks of bright colours to using a streaking cap which does take a while but always comes out really nice and if im not happy its easy to fix. My boyfriend helps out if I've missed bits at the back which is handy. I love being able to change my hair when ever I feel like it and I feel that I get better results than when I've gone to a salon.

I'm such a slacker at dying my hair, I probably do it like every 3-6 months or even less then that. My hair is really long and I always seem to make such a mess of everything. When I start getting more greys (I just have a few strands at there moment), then I will regulary dye my hair!

2nd August, 2014

I'm lucky that I have the help of an amazing hairdresser at home to apply the products but we always use box dyes as we have never been able to get the same shade with salon dyes!!! I'd love to try this out as I know they have a nice purple shade!!

I love garnier products and definitely a home dying girl... Try new brands all the time..keen to stick to one though.. This may be it.

I'm a stay at home mum so normally if I'm feeling I need a colour in my hair it's a trip to farmers or the supermarket for a DIY job. However I'm very lucky ad my husband does it for me now after the kids have gone to bed :) my very own colour stylist at home hehe

Im a bit of an at home professional too. I can do it all myself and make Zero mess! And If i miss patches (which i hope not) usually they look like i did it on purpose (LOL) Being a parent hairdresser visits on the regular are a bit out of budget and doing it at home i can get very similar results for a 10th of the money. Plus changing hair colours regularly is Fun as you can always change it back :)

I consider myself a pro at diy hair dyeing. I've been dyeing my mums hair for years and I'm especially good at grey coverage. That being said I recently ombréd my hair and I think it would look rad with a deep red or pyrple instead of the light brown it is now!

2nd August, 2014

Normally I would do at home with the help of my mum (haha!) though for a school performance once I needed to go from blonde to a darker colour. We used a semi-permanent dye, and tried black overtop, which turned the blonder parts of my hair a lovely bluey-gray colour. Then tried a brown over top to tone it down but mustn't hve left in in long enough for the colour to develop fully so I was left with brown hair with a twinge of green! I surprisingly could pull it off but only spent one day at school like that before covering it up! Learned from that lesson fairly promptly!
