How To Stop Your Smile Ageing You

As you may have figured by now Beauty Towers is a bit of a magical place. Not only does it brim with the most beautiful products, it also houses a few elves, one pixie, a Halloween fairy and that terribly mischievous and amazingly elusive gossip fairy. However one of the few magical beings not to reside here is the Tooth Fairy. So when we read this article in the Daily Mail that talked about how a less than pristine smile can age you by up to 12 years we had to lure one in with the promise of our children’s future teeth so we could learn how to keep our smiles as sparkly as possible for as long as possible.

The Tooth Fairy spilled the beans…

As much as I adore collecting those baby teeth of yours, I’d rather you kept those adult chompers in your mouth where they belong, because a clean and bright smile is one of the most beautiful things a human can own. But to do this you need to ensure you’ve the basics down.

Do brush twice daily and use a soft bristled toothbrush so that you don’t do any unnecessary damage to the enamel on your teeth. You’ll also want to make sure your toothbrush is comfortable in your mouth, so if you’re struggling to get right down the back find a smaller headed toothbrush. And make sure you brush for two minutes, paying attention to the chewing surfaces and the inner and outer sides of your teeth. Technique is also important dearies, hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth and brush up and down in short strokes, so that you don’t damage gums.

I do realise flossing can be a touch tough, but flossing daily is also imperative in order to keep your teeth and gums in superb shape. Once again you’ll want to ensure you’re doing it correctly – you don’t want to be too rough or you’ll do damage. Wrap the twine between your fingers and then slide it gently up and down the tooth following the curve. Not a fan of the way the twine cuts into your fingers no matter how gently you wrap it? You can always pick up flossing sticks, which some find easier to maneuveur.

Of course it’s not just dental hygiene that keeps your smile looking lovelier longer, you need to think about what you put in your mouth. Alas some of the goodies we enjoy taste good but don’t do much for the teeth. Limit or avoid caffeinated drinks, like tea, coffee and coke. Red wine’s not great for keeping your pearlers clean either. Even beetroot, and darker berries like blueberries, can dull your teeth, as can smoking. Basically if you were to drop it on your fairy gown and think ‘oh flip, how am I going to get that out’ it will also be staining your teeth. If you have indulged in anything teeth-stainery, consider rinsing your mouth out with water to remove any fresh surface staining.Outside of day-to-day care do try and visit a dental professional on a regular basis. A check-up can catch any naughties before they become nasties and a good clean can work wonders for keeping those chompers of yours on the sparkly side.

Right-o – I hear the sound of teeth being tinkled into glasses. Time to work! Tootle-pip!

And off she went in a flutter of gossamer wings, leaving us armed with the knowledge of how to keep our teeth clean and our youthful-ish looks in tact for as long as possible.

So are you a fan of taking care of your ivories? Do you have any tips and tricks for keeping them white and bright? Sharing is caring!

Some fantastic tips there Miss Tooth Fairy :) I have to add that I picked up a lovely Lush product so aptly named Tooth Fairy... I hope this powdery toothcare substance will look after my pearly whites :D

Sadly after a lifetime of tea and coffee drinking, my teeth are no longer pearly white, I would love to get them professionally whitened or even capped.

I use to go to the dentist regularly in my home country because it was affordable and we had medical aid but looking after my teeth now is like breaking the bank but I'm fortunate to have no issues with my teeth. I do try to floss regularly and use an electric toothbrush because the manual brushes just don't do it right for me. Although I have only had it for about 3 years. It is gentle on my gums but cleans my teeth superbly!

Back in the day I would brush my teeth with baking soda.

Great tips. I don't like the whitening toothpastes that are really popular. I find that they make the inside of my mouth peel? Not badly but enough for me to wonder about the ingredients used. It also affects the skin on and around my lips! I wonder if anyone else has this issue. And what dentist's think of these products. I think an annual trip to the dentist is also a good investment in your pearly whites.

I'm pretty good at most of this but will make sure I brush up and down as oppose to however I fancy.

I have been very careful with my teeth in the last years as I have got older and use a whitner toothpaste which has helped a lot. I also now go to the dentist every 6 months as I find this stops problems early. I was guilty of being too rough with my gums and they have improved a lot since I have taken more care.

I'm always good with my teeth. Brush at least twice daily plus floss at night after a day of eating away! Although people say it's ok you can replace your teeth when youre older, they can never replace your real teeth!! Plus aughhh imagine the price tag on new teeth!!

Omgodness! I've been brushing my teeth so wrong. I normally brush across , if that makes sense. My teeth look terrible. I've been trying different toothpastes too. I need to floss more.

I recently chipped my front tooth! Oh the devastation! I'm always so careful with my teeth!

I think coffee is my enemy- Someone needs to invent a coffee straw.

I'd love to have movie star teeth, but mine are a long way from that!

I think most movie stars cap all their teeth.

So the chip is exactly the size and shape of a pin- that's what I bit to make it chip so it's tiny but I can feel it! Oh those lines- I have them and hate them! No straws for me ever- caffeine tablets it is.

Aw no I chipped my front tooth recently too. While no one else can really notice it, I can feel it there (and see it) everyday. So you have my empathy.

Gentle flick up motions stop receding gum lines (which also causes sensitivity in places you don't want). I LOVE the sensodyne toothbrushes, they've got a nice small head that fits in your mouth more comfortably than the others.

Thank you both . I must try that way of brushing. I never knew sensodyne made brushes. Its the only tooth paste brand that doesn't hurt my gums.

I've come to love good whitening toothpastes too Julieal, they really help.
