How to tell what your skintone is..and why it's important.

We're sure most of us can describe our skin colour e.g fair, light, dark, and also most of us know what our skin type is e.g dry, normal, oily, combination.  But how many of us know what skintone we have?

Your skintone is the underlying "tone' or "hue' of your skin. You will either have "cool" undertones to your skin, or "warm" undertones to your skin.

Skintone is  determined by  a couple of things;

a) The amount of Melanin (the natural substance that gives colour & pigment to the skin, eyes and hair).

b) The number of blood vessels that are closest to the skin's surface.

Within ethnic groups skincolour can vary considerably although skintone tends be be consistent.  Although exposure to the sun can change a persons skin colour, your skintone will remain unaffected.

Knowing what skintone you have is helpful,  as choosing clothes make up or hair colour that will work with your skintone, not against it will ultimately enhance your look.

So how do you tell? Well, the good news is, that you don't need a whole heap of scientific equipment! Just bring along  a clean makeup free face, a good mirror, a good dollop of natural light (not fluourescent light), and maybe a friend.

There are a number of ways to tell what your skintone is and we'll outline them here.  They're pretty quick and easy so you might want to do a couple of them just to check.

  1. Turn your wrists over and look at the veins on the inside of your wrists. Make sure you are standing in direct sunlight. If your veins seem to have a "green" tone - then you have a warm skintone, blueish looking veins generally indicate a cool skintone.
  2. Hold a piece of plain white paper to your face (make it a decent size say A4). Look at how your skin looks in contrast to the paper. Does it look yellow or golden? If so you have a warm skintone, if it looks more pink, then you have a cool skintone.
  3. If you haven't cleaned behind your ears for a good few years then you may either want to give this one a miss or use it as an opportunity to do so!  The skin behind your ear is evidently "pure" in tone. Give it a good clean then have a friend pull your ear forward and look behind it in natural light.  If your friend sees a yellow hue, then your've a warm skin tone, more pink - yes you've got it by now, you're a cool skintone.
  4. Finally lets get the foil out, grab some gold foil and some silver foil.  Hold the silver foil up to your face, how does each one make your complexion look? Apart from telling you what costume colour to head towards for your next space party, the right foil will make your complexion look healthy wheras the wrong foil will make your complexion look sallow. And yes you guessed it, if gold foil makes you look good then you have a warm skintone, if the silver one was the bomb for you, then you have cool skintones.

So there you have it. Now you can use this new found knowledge when choosing new make up colours. Looking for a new red lipstick? If you've got warm skintones, head towards more "yellow" based reds, cool skintones should lean towards more "blue" based reds. Same applies when choosing your clothes colours or even hair colours.

So, what colour skintone are you?

I have neutral-warm undertones. I think this is very important to figure out before shopping for foundation; and don't always let counter girls do it! My foundation used to make me look terrible for ages and its because I got matched to a pink/cool shade. Since I started wearing warmer/neutral foundations my skin looks so much better!

I'm both.. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad... I'm not great at picking out colours that match my skin, hence why I don't wear lipstick or eye shadows.

I've always wondered what skin tone I have, so this article is super helpful! I think I'm warm toned but will have to check and do all these tests I proper natural light. I'll need to find some gold foil somewhere too, hmmm...

Is it possible to be a mix between both? My vains showed both blue and green tones, same with the skin behind my ears it was pink but also yellow as well!

I am pretty sure I have warm tones... although in winter I will check again... is it normal for skin tone to change drastically?

I'm a cool but a bit more towards the middle of the spectrum so I can do gold and some other warm colours too.

I'm a cool tone....can BR now put up what colours suit different tones please :) I have usually chosen makeup colours and hair colour by my eye colour (green) so would be interesting to see if it's the same with skin tone.

I'm a cool tone, but I can wear warm tones as well. Just lucky that way :)

I would say some areas of my face are more warm toned like my forehead and about an inch or so all around the edge but some other spots like my cheeks and T-zone are more cool toned. As for the veins on my wrist I have both blue and green. My overall skin tone on my body it definitely more warm toned. When it comes to foundation and I have a really hard time finding my color I go for more of a warm tone as I think it evens out the redness. When it comes to picking red lipstick shades I go for colors like plum shades because they don't make my cheeks look overly pink. When it comes to other eye, lip or cheek colors I'll go either way. If I had to pick a hair color I would probably opt for more of a cool toned red or brown. Gold jewelry definitely looks better on me than silver but silver's cheaper so I'm more likely to wear it.

Definitely cool toned... I didn't figure this out till my 30's though and it changed my look completely once I realised what suited me!

11th March, 2014

Oh cool, I'm a cool toned girl. I never knew how to tell before so this was very helpful!

I definitely have a cool skin tone….which is funny as I always tell people I'm cold-blooded as I tend to 'bask' a lot in the sun but never tan - there are definitely no yellow or golden undertones here! The foil trick seems to ring pretty true for me - I wouldn't be caught dead wearing gold jewelry as it makes me look sick!

I've quite decided that I'm a cool skin tone because I prefer silver over gold and think it looks better on me too. I can;t do the vein test as to me they look both green and blue GRRRR!!!! lol. I wish it was easier.
